Message from the President...
Once again, the news of this past year was “change”.
Wheatland Athletic Association has had to adapt our
marketing, scheduling and future plans due to environmental
policy changes and the economy.
A positive change for all of us is the increased focus
on the environment. In an effort to reduce the
amount of paper coming home through children’s
backpacks, local school districts have either discontinued
or limited the distribution of flyers through
the schools. Wheatland Athletic Association’s primary
marketing tool was the distribution of our registration
forms periodically during the school year.
In 2009, please look for our forms in the following
places:
• Download forms from our website; www.waasports.org
• Pick up a form at our office; 2323 Liberty Street, Aurora IL
• Print from Dist 204 efolder. WAA forms are posted periodically
at http://ipsdweb.ipsd.org/eFolder.aspx
• Use page 15 of this newsletter; a universal form that you may use
for any sport registration.
With the decline in the real estate market, progress on our Davis Park
project has stalled. WAA will continue to hold this property for development,
however, we are unable to proceed until the utility service
and civil engineering on the project is completed by the developer.
The Board of Directors has pursued other projects to help us
address field needs. These projects include joint ventures with Crossroads
Community Church, Ginger Creek Community Church and
Naperville Park District. We continue to enjoy Affiliate status with
Fox Valley Park District. Two fields at Crossroads (Eola Road and
Wolf’s Crossing) should be ready for play as soon as June 2009. Two
additional Fox Valley Park District fields will also be ready for our
summer baseball/softball programs. ...continued on page 3
Volunteers Welcome!
WAA is always seeking volunteer coaches and assistant coaches for all of our sports programs.
All of our recreational & competitive programs depend entirely upon volunteer participation.
Coaches and assistant coaches are needed for every team.

Although we have lost usage of middle school soccer
fields due to a district decision to preserve these fields
for school only activities, we continue to pursue additional
large soccer fields through the local park districts,
community associations, and churches.
In writing this letter, I am reminded of our greatest
strength; our volunteers. I would like to thank all of
our volunteers for their efforts to provide athletic
opportunities to the children in our community. On
behalf of our Board and our WAA family, I also want
to wish our Ducks Baseball Director, Rich Janor, well
on his campaign for a seat on the Naperville Park District
Board. The NPD board election will be held on
April 7, 2009.
Please consider attending our annual meeting. Information
on the meeting is listed on page 2.
Recreational Baseball & T-ball
Program
We emphasize the fundamentals of the game as
players are taught the basics of hitting, throwing,
catching and base-running within a framework of
teamwork and sportsmanship. Teams are organized
with neighborhoods in mind and games are
played at area park district, church, and school
July.
In the quest to be the premier rec baseball program
in the Fox Valley area for kids ages 5—14,
WAA offers an age progression of playing levels in
its baseball program. Training is started at the
Kindergarten level with T-ball in which the players
are taught the baseball fundamentals in a FUN
and learning manner. Kids then progress to
Rookies where the ball is pitched by a coach.
From there, the rest of the program mirrors the
real world progression of baseball and starts with
Single A and moves on to Double A ball and finally
Girls Softball Program
WAA’s Girls Recreational Softball program
is structured into four divisions based on the
player’s current grade. Grades 1st & 2nd
enjoy a natural transition from T-ball. Focus
is on learning the fundamentals of softball.
Coaches pitch to their own team the entire
game. 3rd & 4th grades continue learning
the fundamentals of hitting, throwing,
catching, and base-running. Pitching is
shared during the game between players and
emphasized. 7th & 8th grades focus on fundamentals
The Wheatland Wizards Travel Basketball
program is striving to develop a youth program
that supports and promotes our philosophy. As a
program, we do not believe that simply playing 60
games a year develops the skills needed in order to
advance into high school and college level basketball.
The proper approach is to have a mix of high
quality skills training, proper game preparation,
strategy, and high level of competition.
In addition to becoming physically fit and well
skilled in basketball we place a high emphasis on
academic achievement. We like to recognize those
athletes that can develop both physically and mentally.
The program balances hard work and fun.
This is a Youth Program focused on the athlete that
is involved in multiple sports and activities but
wants to continue to develop competitively in basketball.
Summer off-season session is offered and
allows the player an opportunity to continue to
focus on skill development in a highly structured
format. The winter session continues to place high
emphasis on training and practice time throughout
the season. Teams can begin working out at the
beginning of October with games generally beginning
in early November and going to early March.
Wheatland Ducks Baseball Club
The Wheatland Ducks Baseball Club began in 2002 with
one travel team and has since grown to twelve teams,
ranging in age from 9-14. The original Ducks team was
primarily composed of players from the WAA Wheatland
Majors baseball program, which continues to fuel
growth in the Ducks program.
The primary focus of the program has always been developing
young men of character and class. The program
offers kids about 50-60 games and year-round
training and instruction. All Ducks teams are coached
by experienced volunteers and supported by generous
sponsors from the local business community.
Wheatland Spikes Fast Pitch Softball
The Wheatland Spikes is a competitive
Girls Fast Pitch Softball
program for players 7—18. The
teams compete in the spring and
summer and train indoors
through the winter. We will play
between a 35 & 60 game schedule.
Part of the schedule will
include tournament play. There
will be eleven teams in 2009.
We emphasize having fun on the field and stress class
and sportsmanship in victory and defeat. We seek out
quality players and opponents and strive to become the
best we can be. Our vision is to become one of the
premier softball programs in our area and in Illinois
over the next several years.
Through the game of softball, we will instill in our players
a positive attitude,a sense of self-responsibility,
discipline, respect and a strong work ethic. These principles
are central as we strive to develop skills, teach
solid softball fundamentals, and prepare our athletes to
be the best they can be - both mentally and physically.
