THE FAIRWAY – MAY 2012
Presidents Report
Harry Barton Equipment Fund Launched:
The committee have established a separate fund to raise
money to replace existing equipment when necessary.
Given the state of some of our tiring course machinery I
believe it is imperative to start saving for the future.
Our immediate target is to raise $20,000 towards the
purchase of a 5 gang fairway mower.
The current fairway mower has 3 gangs and although
recently renovated must surely have a limited working
life. The additional 2 gangs of cutters would reduce
mowing time and fuel use by up to 40%.
To date we have received generous donations from
members of Laurie Harding $200 Leon Thomas $100
and Peter Stemp $100. We welcome further donations
from members (they can be anonymous if requested).
The committee also intends to direct other income from
projects like wood sales and raffles to the fund. Further
suggestions are welcome.
April Tournament.
What a fantastic event for our club. Whilst not having a
full list of expenses at this stage I believe a profit of
approximately $5000 is likely.
On behalf of the club I would like to thank everyone
involved in the running of this event. I tend to shy
away from naming individuals in events like this for
fear of missing someone, however in this case I believe
some organisers should be singled out for their
significant contributions.
• The course preparation was outstanding effort
from Glen Carroll, Gavin Lang and their team
of very hard workers who worked tirelessly in
the preceding weeks.
• Sponsorship and raffles. Heather Braid did a
great job in coordinating and signing up
sponsors.(see later article).Heather and friends
did very well in organising and running
valuable daily raffles in addition to our major
raffle. Jenny Dyer does outstanding work
leading in coordinating this group.
• The Bar. I am constantly amazed at the efforts
of our bar manager Glenn Cox whose tireless
efforts over the weekend almost from dawn till
well after dusk is fantastic for our club.
• Catering. Once again a huge thanks to Moira
and Lorna and their team of helpers. Events like
this tend to be very gruelling for those involved
in food preparation, presentation and clean up.
Congratulations also to Michael Bottomley who
coordinates house activities including the bar
and catering arrangements.
• Golf - What an incredible job Colin Bean did
in organising the golf side of things. I
personally know that Colin has been working
on this for months in organising trophies, entry
forms draws etc.
A big thanks also to Men’s captain Grant
Thomas who so ably assisted Colin over the
weekend. Phil Broderick gave up each
afternoon for the weekend to help with score
cards etc and we thank him for that. Matt
O’Brien has a wealth of golf and tournament
knowledge. His sound advice is always
appreciated.
• Publicity - Stan Saville continues to provide a
great service as our media guru. His reports
gain valuable publicity for our club.
Winners Are Grinners(Mark, Peter, Peter
and Tony)
• Flags. I must acknowledge Pear Kidman’s
effort in erecting the display of flags along the
front fence. Pearl performed this task in pouring
rain. I think they make a colourful approach to
the club.
My apologies to anyone I missed but I did preface my
comments by recognising it took a big effort by many
of our members to make things work so well.
I would also like to thank all of our members who
played and in particular who were able to entice others
to play.
John Howorth exceeded expectations by “signing” up
more than 16 juniors to play in the Sunday event. John
won the prize for attracting the most visitors to the
event. Well done Champ. John also hit a personal
milestone last week to become our second lowest
handicapped player. He is now on 4.Watch out James.
Men’s Club Championships:
They commence this weekend. Good luck to all players
in all grades. Winning a club championship at any level
is an incredible achievement. By now players would
have realised that we needed to verti drain the greens. It
is unfortunate that we needed to do this immediately
before the championships but the professional advice is
that this treatment was necessary to protect the future of
our greens.
Eligibility. I would like to clarify this following the
recent Men’s 4BBB Championships won in fine style
by Matt O’Brien and Gavin Lang who had 74 off the
stick. Jim Dimopolous and his partner (a visitor)
equalled that score but were clearly ineligible because
Jim’s partner was not a member. They were however
eligible to win the daily event.
To win a board or gold letter event a player must be a
financial full member of the club. Country members
must have played a minimum of 6 Saturday events in
the 12 months preceding a championship.
Max Gale. Max achieved a significant target for all
golfers recently in a vets event at Eaglehawk. Yes its
true Max shot a score under his age. I am not allowed to
say how young Max is but his score was 81. What an
incredible achievement Max. Some friends and I were
trying to calculate how old we would need to be to play
to our age. Scary!!!
Lorna Davey. Lorna won the NTP on the 4 th hole for
the tournament. Lorna hit her great shot on Friday. By
my estimates at least 200 more shots were played in
trying to beat her without luck. Well done Lorna.
Sponsors.
Many thanks to the following sponsors who supported
our tournament.
i.e. because they sponsor your club.
FROM OUR GOLF COORDINATOR COLIN BEAN:
The club held a very successful Tournament over the weekend and it was successful because so many people
contributed, from the work crews under the direction of Glen to the ladies in the kitchen with Moira, Glenn in the bar,
Heather gaining sponsors, the sponsors themselves (major sponsors Steve Barty and Darren Gervasoni), and so many
more people who gave time and effort to make it such a great weekend.
Thank you one and all. I won't even try to name everyone because it's a certainty I'd forget someone. Congrats too to all
the winners.
I've stolen Stan's summary of the day for the results and here it is…..
The Tournament held in ideal conditions over the
weekend attracted 280 entries from all over the
State.
The 4BBB on Friday kick started the weekend
with local pair Craig Day and Laurie Harding
winning the mens' event with 48 points from
Matthew and James O'Brien 47 pts.
Heather Braid and Paul Long were the winners of
the mixed or ladies event with 47 points.
On Saturday the locals again prevailed with Tony
Strong, Peter Shinn, Peter McCoombe and Mark
Verlaan taking out the mens Ambrose 57 5/8
from Matthew and James O'Brien, Rob Field and
Mark Holt(Yass) 58 nett.
Pictured……
The mixed or ladies Ambrose was won by Jean,
Matthew and Glenn Lorenz and Paul Long 59 5/8
on a count back from Michelle O'Brien, Ken O'Brien, Grant Thomas and Peter Brooker (Yass).
Nearest the pin on the 7th was Matthew O'Brien and on the 12th. Phillip Freeman.
Sunday saw the 18 hole individual champions decided. A 3 hole play-off was required to decide the men’s
championship between Braiden Conner (Neanger) and Gavin Lang (pictured below) who both had 78 off the stick.
Braiden sunk a long putt on the 12th hole for birdie to win the
playoff.
The A Grade Nett winner was Peter Williams 72 from Nigel
Squire 73.
The B. Grade was won by stalwart Max Gale 71 from Tony
Strong 72 nett.
The Junior boys champ was Max Nachman 83. The nett boys
winner was S. Woodman.
The ladies open and Junior champion was Tahlia Holmberg 79 off
the stick from Jenni Bilkey 83. The junior girls nett winner was
Katara Bilkey.
The ladies A. Grade nett winner was Marj Lang from runner-up
Pam MacGregor.
Lorna Davey held the nearest the pin on the 4th. hole for the
duration of the tournament.
Congratulations and well done everyone!!!
COURSE COORDINATOR GAVIN SAYS:
A big thank you to Glenn Carroll and all the club volunteers for their continued efforts and especially for having the
course looking great for the annual tournament last week.
With the weather and Anzac day they managed to fit 5 days work into 3 and presented a great looking golf course for
members and visitors to enjoy.
Members may have noticed some dark patches in a few of the greens in the last few weeks, this is as a result of some
treatment to kill a moss growing in the greens. The dark patches are in fact the dead moss. The cause of this moss
growth is water staying to close to the surface and not draining away quick enough.
The fix is to Vertedain the greens (spick 4mm holes 100mm deep), this will have very little impact on playing
conditions as the holes are so small and will grow over quickly. This treatment needed to be done before winter so by
the time this Fairway is printed it will have been completed.
Consideration was given to waiting till after the club championships but if the weather turned in the next 3 weeks it
would be too late and we would have a bigger problem this time next year.
A works plan for the winter months has been prepared with the main focus over the next few months finishing the
bridge on 17, a couple of small sprinkler sections, extending and levelling some tee's.
If any member has some time and would like to help just have a chat to Glenn to see how you can help.
Junior Champions:
Tahlia Holmberg and
Max Nachman
FROM THE CLUBHOUSE:
Our tournament was a busy weekend for the hospitality side of things.
Thank you to Moira and her very willing helpers in planning and managing to feed our members, guests and visitors
over the three days. Also thank you Glen and his assistants for long hours quenching thirsts, drowning bad shots and
celebrating great wins.
Thank you to our cleaner Jeannette McLean who continues to do great work keeping the clubhouse very clean.
A not forgotten person is Neil Campbell who each week takes away our bar empties to the local recycle area.
