Sunday best, a disdain for over-priced snacks
and claustrophobic leg room replaced five course
meals and fold out beds. By the 1980s this once
luxurious pursuit was becoming an uncomfortable
means to an end.
While these ‘no-frills’ airlines and their brash
frugality take their share of the blame for this
sense of malaise that has fallen across air travel,
the opportunities to recreate a nostalgic glamour
have not been lost to us. Perhaps through the
on screen re-imaginings of a rose tinted past
and the wistful tales of travel from those who
have experienced it, we have overlooked these
opportunities and conveniently forgotten that, as it
did then, luxury comes at a price.
The jet-set elite was unlike any other social group
that had preceded it, based not on blood-line or
achievement, but a hunger for hedonism in lavish
surroundings and hidden away pockets of the
world. The club is open to all who have the money
to buy their way in, and today, frequent flyer miles
and upgrades are the currency. Next time you fly,
take incentive from that hedonistic time, cocktails
taste better when they’re complimentary and flying
British Airways could be cheaper than you think.
