Technical information
MGA-CORONA ® 5045
Low-migration, organoleptically neutral, sheet-fed
offset inks for printing the outside of food packaging
Consumer protection demands that packed foodstuffs not be contaminated by packaging components.
Substrates, printing inks and varnishes are therefore not allowed to contain substances that
are transferred to the packed food in quantities that exceed the legal limits.
As a responsible partner of the printing industry, the hubergroup has developed new sheet-fed offset
inks that are not only organoleptically neutral, but also offer low migration.
Undesirable interactions between foodstuffs and their packaging can occur by means of
• invisible setoff in the stack or on the reel, that is, the transfer of invisible substances from the printed
image to the unprinted reverse side above it (food contact side) and in the end from there to
the packaged foodstuff,
• migration, that is, the transfer of substances from the printed image through the substrate to foodstuff,
• the transfer of volatile substances in the enclosed air space of packaging, resulting in negative
effects on the odour and taste of the package contents.
For cost reasons, the share of primary packaging has risen greatly over the past years. By definition,
the food packaged in primary packaging comes into direct contact with the unprinted inside of the
packaging.
With MGA-CORONA ® sheet-fed offset inks, carton and paper packaging for foodstuffs, confectionery
and consumables (e.g. tobacco and tobacco products) can be made that comply with the current
European legal requirements.
The legal basis is the Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 . This act governs the marketing of consumer
goods and lays down the fundamental guidelines for the design of food packaging.
Article 3 of the regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 defines the General requirements for food packaging:
Materials and articles, ..., shall be manufactured in compliance with good manufacturing practice so that, under
normal or foreseeable conditions of use, they do not transfer their constituents to food in quantities which could:
a) endanger human health; or
b) bring about an unacceptable change in the composition of the food; or
c) bring about a deterioration in the organoleptic characteristics thereof.
MGA-CORONA ® inks are formulated using only components with a minimal potential for migration.
This distinguishes them significantly from conventional sheet-fed offset inks.
Apart from undesirable interaction with packaged foodstuffs, constituents that migrate from the printed
image in contact with thin polyolefin wrapping films can cause what is known as „swelling“. The
polymer film material absorbs liquid substances (such as mineral oil) and swells becoming „wavy“
i.e. it buckles.
Technical information hubergroup . 10.1.15 E . Page 1/4

The appearance, feel and function of the packages can suffer permanently from swelling.
Prints made with MGA-CORONA ® inks do not cause any swelling at all, even when they
come into contact with 16 µm-thick polyolefin wrapping films.
Bottom Line
MGA-CORONA ® inks are organoleptically neutral, low migration and low swelling inks. As such, they
meet the requirements of the legal regulations cited above. Our new, innovative MGA-CORONA ® printing
ink formulation is the first in the offset sector to enable the requirements that have to be met by food
packaging, namely,
• avoidance of changes in the odour and taste of the package contents
• migration must remain within the set limits and
• no swelling
to be united in one printing ink system.
Properties
• Verified to have very low migration (test results are available from an independent institute)
and lead to very little swelling.
• These inks dry solely through absorption and not oxidatively. Printed products made
using MGA-CORONA ® inks also have a low hexanal content.
• Organoleptic assessment of printed products shows excellent results („Robinson tests“
EN 1230 T1 and T2)
• Relatively slow ink setting speed.
Technical Application
MGA-CORONA ® inks have very good, trouble-free printing characteristics. Since they do
not dry by oxidation, inline finishing with dispersion varnish is essential. Substrates with a
low level of absorptivity necessitate the use of special dispersion varnishes. Without inline
varnishing, there will be setoff in the stack and the required rub resistance will not being
obtained.
Suitable dispersion varnishes have been developed specifically to meet the requirements
of the production of food packages printed with MGA-CORONA ® inks.
The same is also true for fount solution additives and printing auxiliaries.
The instructions that follow in the next section must be strictly obeyed if you want to successfully
manufacture food packaging that complies with the relevant legislation.
Application instructions
Ink consistency
Due to the raw materials used, the MGA-CORONA ® 5045 inks have a marginal higher viscosity
and are less free-flowing than conventional organoleptically neutral offset inks.
Technical information hubergroup . 10.1.15 E . Page 2/4

Damping/fount solution composition
It is best to keep dampener setting low, particularly when ink coverage is low. The isopropanol
concentration in the fount solution when using MGA-COMBIFIX ® must not exceed 10 %
with a pH of 5.0 - 5.4.
The hubergroup has developed fount solution additives for use specifically with these products:
MGA-COMBIFIX ® 8060 (for printing with IPA)
MGA-SUBSTIFIX ® 8360 (for printing without IPA)
MGA-ACRYLAC ® dispersion varnishes
Those varnishes that have been developed specifically for finishing MGA-CORONA ® inks
are:
MGA-ACRYLAC ® 580 130/40
a glossy and rub-resistant varnish for single-sided varnishing
MGA-ACRYLAC ® 580 162/40
a wet-blocking-resistant and rub-resistant varnish.
If required, other varnishes with additional special properties can also be supplied.
We recommend that you set the varnish application rate to the upper limit, in order to obtain
an uninterrupted film of varnish over the inks. We recommend the use of an anilox roller with
a cell volume of at least 13 cm 3 . In this way, you can avoid the following problems:
• inadequate rub resistance
• inadequate gloss
• setoff in the stack.
Printing auxiliaries/ink mixtures
To reduce ink tack only use Print oil 54 0860/52. Under no circumstances may conventinal
printing ink oils, paste reducers or the like be used.
MGA inks must only be mixed with other MGA inks. Never use siccatives, in order to prevent
the development of strong-smelling decomposition products.
Further processing
We recommend that you do not continue processing the finished stacks immediately after
completing printing because of the relatively slow setting speed of the inks.
Roller treatment/wash-up
Due to the development of undesirable odour and taste, the press roller must not be sprayed
with Anti-dryer 10 T 1200 or Farbfit 10 T 3303. After washing the rollers, leave them to dry
well.
