the community as well as ~ew York and visi<strong>to</strong>rs. The \luseum is plann<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> expand its<br />

educational programs. research center for students. scholars. artists. etc. Also. the \Iuseum<br />

serves bil<strong>in</strong>gual and disabled students. \Ve urge the Borough Board <strong>to</strong> ,,"ote <strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Sherida E. Paulsen, a pr<strong>in</strong>cipal <strong>of</strong> PasanelJa. Kle<strong>in</strong>, S<strong>to</strong>Izman and Berg Architects. Chair uf<br />

the His<strong>to</strong>ric Build<strong>in</strong>gs Committee <strong>of</strong> the American Institute <strong>of</strong> Architects and former<br />

Chair <strong>of</strong> Landmarks Preservation Commission read the attached statement.<br />

1\Iichael Henry Adams, a his<strong>to</strong>rian architect and who wrote a book titled Harlem Lost and<br />

Found. He stated that 2 Columbus Circle is similar <strong>to</strong> what happened <strong>to</strong> the Audubon<br />

Theater <strong>in</strong> Harlem. The former Manhattan Borough President negotiated <strong>to</strong> presen:e the<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g. Mr. Henry also stated that still <strong>to</strong>day this countr)" has a problem with due<br />

process. The Landmarks Commission was established <strong>to</strong> hold hear<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>to</strong> say if this<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g should be protected or not. In Bos<strong>to</strong>n. it has a law that each time you are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

destroy a build<strong>in</strong>g that is over 50 years old au<strong>to</strong>matically there is a hear<strong>in</strong>g. !\Ir. Henry<br />

asked the Board not <strong>to</strong> approve the propose sale <strong>of</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g. Two former chairs <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Landmarks Preservation Commission who refused <strong>to</strong> protect this build<strong>in</strong>g and even <strong>to</strong><br />

consider <strong>to</strong> landmark. He stated that this is wrong and he urged the Borough Board <strong>to</strong> do<br />

the right th<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Barbara Tober, Chair <strong>of</strong> the Museum <strong>of</strong> Arts and Design urged everyone <strong>to</strong> vote <strong>in</strong> favor <strong>of</strong><br />

the build<strong>in</strong>g. The build<strong>in</strong>g sits like a gray lad)', it needs attention and love. "lany non-code<br />

regulations <strong>of</strong> the floors and walls. The build<strong>in</strong>g needs love and attention. The people<br />

<strong>in</strong>voh'ed with this build<strong>in</strong>g understand the need not <strong>to</strong> destroy. but enhance do<strong>in</strong>g it the<br />

right way. \Ve have obta<strong>in</strong>ed a famous architect <strong>to</strong> work with us on the build<strong>in</strong>g. l'rge<br />

eHryone <strong>to</strong> allow us <strong>to</strong> it.<br />
