Fond Farewell to Susan Welker

One of the lagoon’s longest serving and most ardent protectors, San Diego County Supervising
Park Ranger Susan Welker, has retired. Beginning in the summer of 1986 with only a
truck to serve as both transportation and an office, Susan dedicated herself to watching
over San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. Before Susan left, we got together to ask her

Seven Days in December:
Recent Storms at San Elijo Lagoon By Barry Lindgren, Scientist
Wasn’t this supposed to be a La Niña year? New satellite data show that the Pacific Ocean is
in the grips of one of the strongest La Niña weather systems in the last 50 years. La Niña is a
climatological phenomenon that brings heavy rainfall to places such as Australia, which recently
experienced devastating flooding, and unusually dry periods to California. Yet, December was the
wettest month here in more than a century; a strong jet stream from the Gulf of Alaska pounded
Southern California with almost nonstop rain. This so-called Arctic oscillation was potent enough
to negate any of La Niña’s effects. According to Rand Allan of San Diego County Flood Control, “The
storm of December 17–23 was one of the wettest storms we have experienced in recent memory.”

As is our tradition, this winter edition features the names of
all who have donated to the Conservancy this past year. Once
again I am deeply moved by the length of this list and am
extremely grateful for your support. This strong membership
base ensures the continued success of the Conservancy. 2011
will be another busy year for us; adding acreage to the reserve,
expanding our environmental education programs, and
planning for a restoration project on the horizon. To assist in

the governance of the Conservancy we welcome Jim Lauer to
our board of directors (see bio on page 3). We also bid farewell to outgoing Vice President Celesd
F. Willoughby and director Peter Johnson. Please join me in thanking Celesd and Peter for their
years of service to our organization.
Denise Stillinger is a founding member of the Conservancy and served as treasurer for the first 15 years.
Her involvement with the lagoon began as a volunteer patroller in 1986 before the county assigned a
ranger to the reserve. In addition to her current duties as president, she continues her commitment as
a docent, leading school groups on walks at the lagoon. Denise has plenty of experience in the field of
education; she teaches biology at the San Elijo Campus of MiraCosta College. She and her husband and
sons are Cardiff residents.

What’s in a
Snail Anyway?

Along the water’s edge in San Elijo Lagoon, nearly indiscernible
bumps are actually small shells that exist all over the mudflats. These
shells house marine snails called California horn snails (Cerithidea
californica). Until recently, our sampling only turned up a few at a
time as the population of this snail was very limited in the lagoon.
Now their numbers are reaching up to 100 per square meter.
So why does San Elijo suddenly have large populations of this species?
We have been maintaining the inlet to the estuary open since 1998.
In that time we have watched dramatic changes occur because of it.
Water quality has become more stable which has allowed fish and
invertebrate populations to flourish. In the last three years we have
begun to see the horn snail population increase significantly.
Horn snails, often referred to as an indicator species, play a vital
role in the health and diversity of our coastal estuaries by feeding on
detritus and cleaning the mudflats. But did you know that horn snails
also have the potential to determine the overall health of an estuary?
Kevin Lafferty of the USGS refers to the horn snail as “a mobile data
recorder”. This is due to the many different parasites (trematode
worms) that live inside each horn snail. Each of these parasites
requires specific hosts, mainly fish and birds, to continue its lifecycle.
If one of the hosts is removed, then its dependent parasite disappears
from the site as well. In the same sense, when we restore various
areas of the lagoon, more bird species come to forage, bringing their
specific parasites with them. UCSB professor Armand Kuris believes
that by looking at the trematode population in horn snails, one can
get a good estimate of the general diversity of the lagoon. When a
particular parasite is missing, it tells us that either the host species or
the habitat required to support that species are missing.

Jim became interested in the Conservancy as a result of many
hikes around the lagoon and his desire to give back to his
community. Jim has lived in Encinitas for the past ten years.

received a BS from Montana State
to study coastal stream restoration
David also led efforts to accomplish charitable natural resource
conservation projects in South Asia, Mexico, and the American
West. He moved to Southern California in 2008, eager to
expand his experience to coastal sage scrub and the region’s
biking, surfing, and kayaking.

of Fish and Game. Horn snail populations show that we have been
successful in both keeping the inlet open and increasing the diversity
of the system. There are other indicator species that have yet to be
seen like Bulla gouldiana, the cloudy bubble snail. We anticipate our
future restoration efforts will bring new species that continue to both
increase our diversity and indicate a thriving habitat.

SELC: What was the San Elijo Lagoon
Ecological Reserve like when you first began
working there as a County Ranger?
SW: Dumping was a problem in secluded
locations, especially at a demolished sewer
treatment plant, which later became the
location of the Nature Center. We spent
years just fencing access points and installing
reserve signs. Loose dogs were, and still are,
a problem. People regularly made their own
trails. We caught poachers fishing with nets
(not allowed), shooting ducks and geese,
and harvesting wild plants (mainly for
florist trade). We also had some issues with
livestock grazing.
SELC: How have the lagoon and the reserve changed?
SW: When I started, the lagoon closed up over the summers. The
high water level, changeable salinity, low oxygen levels and warm
water temperatures made a difficult environment for native plants
and animals.
Over the years, we’ve been able to nearly eliminate the motorcycle
and dirt bike use and illegal dumping. I am particularly proud of
reducing the Pampas grass in the reserve. When I first started, the
trail between Santa Helena and El Camino Real was nothing but a
Pampas grass forest. It has been a pleasure seeing the area return to
native vegetation.
SELC: Have your responsibilities or activities changed over the years?
SW: When I first started there was only me. Later Robert Patton and
Ron Strahm were assigned part-time to the reserve. We had a county
radio for communication, no computers, and no cell phones at that
time. We could get crews from the honor camp to come in for heavy
lifting and large projects, but much of the early work was done by the
three of us. Now with the Nature Center we’re up to four employees.
SELC: What has it been like since the new Nature Center was built
in 2009?
SW: I haven’t been out in the field as much as before. It is surprising
how much time is involved in maintaining and staffing a building
open to the public 8 hours a day, 364 days a year. Someone needs
to be available to the public for every one of those 2,912 hours. Our
volunteers are invaluable in helping to staff the welcome counter,
freeing us up to take care of the rest of the 1,000 acres of the reserve,
where we still maintain the trails, prune vegetation, repair erosion
and countless other things.
SELC: I know you have your B.S. in Botany from San Diego State.
Did you know all the native and invasive plants when you first started
at San Elijo?
SW: I was somewhat familiar with landscape plants having worked
for the City of San Diego for a few years as a gardener. I’ve also
belonged to the California Native Plant Society for years.

SELC: How about the birds? I’ve been
impressed by how well you know the many
bird species in the lagoon.
SW: I would have to give Robert Patton the
credit there. It was great working with him,
and even when we were doing trail work, or
picking up trash, it was like a day-long, natural
history field trip.
SELC: What are your retirement plans? I
know you’re an accomplished ceramicist. Will
you be pursuing your art work?
SW: I would like to learn to draw. I envy the
artists I see painting here, since I can hardly
draw a straight line. I also plan to oil up the
kick wheel and throw a few pots.
The Conservancy board and staff are grateful
for Susan’s years of dedicated service. While we congratulate her on
her retirement, we will miss her.
Tribute to
Susan Welker

While many people know of Susan Welker’s dedication to
protection of the natural resources of the reserve, only those
who have had the privilege of working with her may be aware
of her devotion to rescuing the wildlife .
Years ago when I was working as a County Ranger alongside
Susan, we received urgent phone calls reporting an injured
pelican flopping about on the mudflats. The poor bird was
visible from Manchester Ave. but located well to the center of
the lagoon. Because of the depth and viscosity of the mud, it
was impossible to swim out to rescue the pelican. The two of
us ended up traversing the lagoon in an exhausting modified
back-stroke of a crawl.
To the bird, we were not rescuers but threats, and it
instinctively knew to strike at the eyes of potential predators.
If you’ve ever studied a pelican up close, you’ve probably
noticed the imposing hook at the end of its beak. Aware of
this, we managed to keep its bill secured as we made our way
back. Eventually it settled down and became docile.
As we clambered out of the mud, lulled by our own exhaustion
and the bird’s docility, I let my guard down. In a split second,
the bird not only once, but twice, struck out at each side of
one of Susan’s eyes, causing small lacerations. Thankfully,
her eye was not injured, but we were both in shock knowing
what could have happened.
The bird was taken to SeaWorld where it was cleaned up,
treated, and then released. Susan, ever humble, recovered but
never boasted. I’m honored to share this story.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR 2010 DONORS

Thanks to continued support from our growing membership, Conservancy staff significantly improved
our field operations and education programs in 2010. After formal training and certification in
California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM), our scientists completed a wetland characterization
of San Elijo Lagoon in evaluating the San Elijo Lagoon Restoration Project (SELRP). We mapped over
9,000 invasive plant occurrences in the Carlsbad Hydrologic Unit. This data goes towards removal of
the invasives and replanting of natives, and is uploaded to statewide databases for use in monitoring
efforts and species distribution research.
We launched “Our Living Watershed: Teaching Scientific Literacy in the San Elijo Lagoon” 3rd, 4th,
and 5th grade curriculum. After visiting the lagoon as third graders in the spring and learning about
wetlands, the same students returned as fourth graders in the fall to participate in the “Eat or Be Eaten”
program which explores the complexities of food webs. In fifth grade the same students return again
to focus on watersheds and water resources. We also graduated our first teen stewards from our “Teens
Restoring Sensitive Habitat” program. High school students were taught on site by our scientists how
to restore native vegetation, improve breeding habitat for the endangered California Least Tern and the
Western Snowy Plover, and reduce pollution and improve water quality within the reserve. Finally, we
consolidated, streamlined, and reassigned our outreach activities and improved our online volunteer
recruitment techniques, yielding more than 100 volunteers for the first restoration event in 2011.

Education Update

Spring Hikes
Save the dates! Enjoy the sights and sounds of spring at San Elijo
Lagoon. Kick off with a first day of spring walk on Sunday, March
20th, followed by another walk on Sunday, April 10th. In March,
docent Jayne Lesley, an experienced birder, will lead the walk to look
for some of the nesting birds of the reserve and practice birding by
sound. Meet at the Rios Avenue trailhead at 8 am. In April, native plant
experts Barbara Wallach and Margaret Fillius will lead a wildflower/
pollinator hike where we’ll enjoy the lagoon’s spring colors and their
pollinator friends. Meet at Rios Avenue trailhead at 9 am.
Lagoon Nature Discovery Camp
For the first time, San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy will be offering a spring
day camp open to kids ages 6–10. Camp events include guided nature
walks, eco-inspired crafts, playing music and games, and journaling.
Funded in part by the City of Encinitas and the Mizel Family Foundation
Community Grant Program, this camp will take place during the week
of April 4–8 from 9 am–Noon at the Nature Center.

Over 30 docents helped the class of 2010 celebrate at the third annual
graduation potluck at Jan Wier’s lovely home near the Rios Avenue

trailhead. After mingling and eating delicious food, we shared some
of the poignant notes students wrote after visiting the reserve. One
student wrote, “The most interesting thing was everything—even
yourself. P.S. There is only one problem about San Elijo Lagoon, I
want to go back.” Another student wrote, “I had a better time than
anyone in the entire class. It was so awesome and I want to come again
and again. You guys taught me so much that my brain is hurting.”
Our docents provide thousands of students unique opportunities to
connect with and appreciate nature, and the impacts are expressed
through their writings. Elizabeth Venrick and Erica Peterson were
recognized for their outstanding contributions in leading the most
community and school group walks. The morning concluded with
the 2010 trainees receiving certificates of graduation and reading the
Interpreter’s Creed.

board of directors. “I am very
pleased to be part of this
organization, and am honored to
serve with Denise Stillinger who
has been involved in protecting
the lagoon for so many years,”
said Scott. “I also have great
respect for Barbara Moore and Susan Welker , who cared about the
lagoon long before the Conservancy even existed, and have always
been willing to share their knowledge with others,” added Scott.
Scott grew up in Redlands, California, and was initially “turned on”
to the natural world by a college buddy at UC Riverside. “During our
Docent of the Quarter By Tara Fuad, Education Director
weekend hiking adventures in the San Bernardino Mountains, this
friend would weave stories about the flora and fauna, and it really
made an impression on me,” reminisces Scott. After college, Scott
was determined to build upon his own knowledge of the natural
world and decided that becoming a “birder” was a good way to start.
“I guess if there is a moral to the story,” reflects Scott, ”it’s that one
person or experience can change your path in life.” Fast forward 30
years, Scott is now weaving his own stories on the trails at San Elijo
Lagoon and sharing his love of nature with visitors to the reserve.
After leading walks for nearly two years, Scott notes that although
you never quite know what to expect, adhering to the following
rules almost guarantees a successful hike: Rule #1—Do not share
everything you know, as tempting as it might be; Rule #2—Listen,
oftentimes folks are there to share their knowledge as much as they
are to learn from you; Rule #3—Never contradict walk participants;
and Rule #4—Accept corrections from young children with grace.
Thank you Scott for your service to the Conservancy; there are surely
more nature lovers out there because of you.

What does this kind of rain event mean for San Elijo Lagoon and
other coastal wetlands? Periodic flooding is a normal part of life
in riparian zones like Escondido Creek. It’s typically a restorative
event—sediments, nutrients and organic matter carried by storm
flows are moved out of the channel and deposited on the floodplain,
nourishing riparian plants and creating mixed habitat and protective
cover for aquatic organisms. For an estuary like San Elijo Lagoon,
these same flows would normally move excess sediments and
nutrients out of the lagoon and into the ocean, providing new sand
for North County beaches.
Unfortunately, in an urban watershed, these “normal” hydrological
processes are often compromised by the impacts of increased
population and development. Extensive impervious cover in the
watershed (streets, driveways, parking lots, etc.) increases the flood
magnitude and the water velocity over a very short period of time as
this water is delivered almost immediately to storm drains and their
receiving waters. Channel bottoms are quickly scoured and banks can
collapse, increasing the sediment loads downstream. These two factors
alone (flood magnitude and velocity) can overwhelm a watershed’s
natural tendency to slow the flood’s flow over the floodplain.

surrounded by urban development and impervious cover.
Impacts to wetlands in arid Southern California are magnified when a
flood event hits harder and faster than it would in the absence of urban
influences. This is why the Conservancy is working with its neighbors
and local cities to make sure that future development in the watershed
employs Low Impact Development (LID) concepts and “buffer zones”
around riparian areas. Remaining mindful of how water moves in a
watershed, and the human activities that change it, is increasingly
important as our coastal population continues to grow.

Cardiff Seaside Market is going green thanks to founder and co-owner Pete Najjar who says, “My
goal is to get rid of bags.” That’s why he and his brother John, also an owner, have initiated an
environmental and philanthropic campaign to encourage Seaside Market customers to bring in
their own shopping bags. Every time you shop at Seaside Market and use your own bag to carry
out your groceries you receive a wooden nickel (1 nickel per bag with a limit of 3 nickels per
shopping trip). When you exit the store you can place your wooden nickel in the box of your
favorite local nonprofit.
So far, San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy has received the most wooden nickels. Of the 7,359 wooden
nickels Seaside Market has awarded its shoppers, 2,279 have been donated to the Conservancy.
Every wooden nickel represents 5 cents Seaside will donate to the Conservancy.
Seaside Market is a family owned and operated business. Pete and John started the store in 1985.
Their father, Sam, has been there six days a week for the last 18 years. Nephew John Jr. works in
the store with occasional help from Pete’s three teenage children. As residents of Solana Beach and
Cardiff, Pete and John believe in “locals helping locals”. They express their affinity and loyalty to
the community by buying from local food vendors, hiring local employees (1/3 of whom have
worked at Seaside10+ years), and giving back to the community by supporting local nonprofits.
Other environmentally friendly measures taking place at Seaside Market are the installation of
recycling containers out front, the use of LED lighting, and solar panels that now illuminate
the Seaside Market sign. Pete and John have also discontinued the use of postcard and paper
advertising mailers. Instead, if you sign up for their rewards card program, you’ll receive emails
of their weekly specials, savings, and buy-one-get-one-free products. Twice a year, rewards card
customers receive a check for up to 3% of their purchases. Now that’s locals helping locals!

In the winter issue of Lagoon Tidings we recognize those Conservancy members whose annual
donations made a difference to San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve in 2010. But what about
a lasting legacy? Have you considered what you might leave behind to continue preserving,
protecting and enhancing the reserve?
An estate gift makes a positive statement. When you include San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy in
the final disposition of your estate, you demonstrate to your family and friends that you believe
in and care about conservation, protecting endangered species, and raising the next generation of
environmental stewards. Your parting gift becomes a declaration of your values.
An estate gift provides enduring support. Estate gifts are especially valuable, not only because
they tend to be larger than annual gifts, but because, unless otherwise directed, your legacy donation
will be preserved in our endowment funds at The San Diego Foundation or the Rancho Santa Fe
