ZENOBI Warehouse/Driver Message from CEO Marlene Kozak In 2011, WCFB once again experienced growth in individuals-served, staffing, and support of the community; we began 2012 serving 7400 households each month and will soon add our 24 th staff member to support warehouse opera�ons. Also of note, the Outreach & Expansion Project shi�ed focus to the Mt. Pleasant/Sco�dale area adding 212 new households and providing 36,000 addi�onal pounds of food. Overall, WCFB distributed over 8.4 million pounds of food to needy Westmoreland County residents in 2011; that places us third in the Feeding America network for Pounds per Person in Poverty. Moreover, in spite of a s�ll-recovering economy, our fundraising efforts were very successful and, in fact, funded over 60% of our annual opera�ng budget. In 2011, with significant support from the R K Mellon Founda�on, we added two staff [for Agency Rela�ons and Volunteer programs], two refrigerated box trucks, a new compactor and equipment for Member Agencies. WCFB also made the following “green” improvements to our facility: installed a new hea�ng system and fans to be�er circulate air; installed insulated windows and completed office renova�ons. All of these improvements allow us to operate more efficiently and effec�vely and are environmentally friendly. WCFB is also proud to announce that in 2011, we received PANO [Pennsylvania Associa�on of Non Profit Organiza�ons] Standards for Excellence cer�fica�on. PANO is the statewide membership organiza�on serving and advancing the charitable nonprofit sector through leadership, advocacy, educa�on and services to improve the quality of life in Pennsylvania. The Standards for Excellence are intended to describe how the most well-managed and responsibly-governed organiza�ons should operate. The Standards provide benchmarks to determine how well an organiza�on is fulfilling its obliga�ons in the following areas: Mission/Program; Governing Body; Conflict of Interest; Human Resources; Financial/Legal; Openness; Fundraising; Public Affairs/Public Policy. Finally, 2012, our 30 th anniversary year, will provide great challenges for WCFB programs, as well: our facility needs a new roof, and costs for food and fuel con�nue to escalate. Moreover, cuts in government funding require con�nued fundraising efforts through web, social media, grant wri�ng and direct mail venues. As always, we will proceed forward, mee�ng these challenges with your help. Without the overwhelming support of the people, businesses and organiza�ons in Westmoreland County, we could not achieve our Mission to enable all Westmoreland County residents who are hungry or at risk of hunger to have ready access to food. STAFF PROFILE TRAVIS HORNE Travis Horne joined the WCFB warehouse staff on May 20, 2011. Travis’ major responsibili�es at WCFB are picking orders, working at Opera�on Fresh Express distribu�ons, providing warehouse maintenance, and receiving and stocking items. He enjoys working at WCFB because of the daylight work hours. He also enjoys spending evenings with his family. A favorite part of his job is helping and mee�ng new people, and making new friends. Travis’ hobbies are motorcycling and farming. He holds an associate’s degree in commercial art from Oakbridge Academy of Art in New Kensington. Previously, he worked at Super Valu from 1990-2002, Cyclone Fence Contractors from 2002-2006, and RTS Packaging from 2006-2011. A resident of Belle Vernon, Travis is married to Renee, a kindergarten teacher at Marion Elementary School in the Belle Vernon Area School District, and has two daughters, Raelyn, 9, and Alayna, 6.. His favorite quote is “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.” from Forrest Gump. Travis says, “Every day is different .” One of the most influen�al experiences in his life was learning the ways of farming and how it helps the world around us. His spare �me ac�vi�es include a�ending car shows with his 1968 Pon�ac Firebird, and landscaping. Travis is a very reliable, responsible, hardworking member of the WCFB warehouse staff. The Chill Challenge According to both the United States Food and Drug Administra�on and the United States Department of Agriculture, Food Safety and Inspec�on Service, refrigera�on of 40 F or be‐ low is one of the most effec�ve ways to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. Microorganisms grow more rapidly at warmer temperatures, and research shows that keeping a constant refrigerator temperature of 40 F or below helps slow growth of these harmful microbes. The Chill Solu�on The best way to make sure your refrigerator is maintaining the recommended temperature of 40 F or below is to check it with a refrigerator thermometer. This type of thermometer is usually a separate tool that stays in the refrigerator and displays the actual temperature. It is not a numbered dial that helps you adjust temperature. Refrigerator thermometers are available at grocery, discount and hardware stores and are recommended for all home refrigerators. When using a refrigerator thermometer, follow these important �ps: �� Always follow thermometer manufacturer instruc�ons for placement of the thermometer inside the refrigerator. �� Make sure your refrigerator thermometer read 40 F or below. Keep in mind there are normal events that might cause your refrigerator thermometer to temporarily read higher than 40 F. These include: 1. Ini�al placement of the thermometer inside the refrigerator 2. A refrigerator door opened for an extended period of �me 3. Hot foods recently placed in the refrigerator 4. The refrigerator’s automa�c defrost cycle �� Your refrigerator cycles on and off. According to NSF Interna�onal (www.nsf.org), you should check the thermometer at the �me your refrigerator compressor just turns on. This is when your refrigerator is at its highest temperature. If the thermometer reads above 40 F, adjust the control dial consistent with the refrigerator manufacture’s instruc�on. The Black Diamonds The Black Diamonds was formed in 2007 by six colleagues seeking to make a difference in the lives of others. The mission of the non-profit organiza�on is to “Empower women, youth and families by suppor�ng educa�onal and professional growth to foster new leadership for tomorrow.” Each December The Black Diamonds holds a holiday celebra�on with a por�on of the proceeds donated to a charity that reflects the mission of the organiza�on. Past recipients have been the East End United Community Center, the Faye�e County Women’s Shelter, the Washington City Mission, ZONA which provides birthing kits to the women of Africa, and the KD Turkey Fund. Each recipient’s mission is consistent with that of The Black Diamond’s organiza�on. Informa�on on the 2012 holiday celebra�on will be forthcoming. James V. Snyder Memorial “Resolu�on Run” On Saturday, January 7, 2012, The 4 th Annual James V. Snyder Memorial “Resolu�on Run” was held at North Park near Wexford PA. The turnout was impressive and the weather was beau�ful considering it was January. $6,000 was raised through the run and silent auc�on and raffle. In September 2007, Jim lost his life a�er a courageous ba�le with Leukemia. Since then, his family has created The James V. Snyder Memorial Fund, the proceeds from the Resolu�on Run will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Westmoreland County Food Bank, and the Mission to El Salvador. Jim helped Westmoreland County Food Bank achieve the status that we hold today. His exper- �se in the areas of pest control, warehouse, and food safety were invaluable. Jim worked closely with WCFB suppor�ng our mission of feeding those in need. He is missed both personally and professionally.
