How the NOVATEC IRD Works<br />
Moisture-laden PET regr<strong>in</strong>d is fed <strong>in</strong>to the rotary drum <strong>in</strong>let of<br />
the IRD us<strong>in</strong>g a st<strong>and</strong>ard NOVATEC res<strong>in</strong> load<strong>in</strong>g system. Special<br />
provisions can be made for load<strong>in</strong>g low bulk density material.<br />
Sensors monitor the material level <strong>in</strong> the supply hopper to ensure<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>uous operation <strong>and</strong> the entire process is controlled by a SIE-<br />
MENS Touch Panel PLC.<br />
The rotat<strong>in</strong>g drum gently transports the material through the<br />
length of the drum us<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>ternal helix. The drum is fitted<br />
with “tumbler f<strong>in</strong>s” ensur<strong>in</strong>g that all surfaces of the material are<br />
quickly exposed to the rays from the banks of IR heaters. This<br />
guarantees fast crystallization <strong>and</strong> <strong>dry</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Energy costs are reduced by up to 45% because <strong>in</strong>frared rays are<br />
so much more efficient at crystalliz<strong>in</strong>g/<strong>dry</strong><strong>in</strong>g the material than a<br />
conventional desiccant system. The lower energy costs translate<br />
<strong>in</strong>to an excellent return on <strong>in</strong>vestment.<br />
There is no need for high volume, bulky desiccant <strong>dry</strong>ers <strong>and</strong><br />
hoppers that are required with conventional crystalliz<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />
The traditional crystallizer unit, by necessity, has a height<br />
that sometimes requires plant modification. A separate <strong>dry</strong>er,<br />
with the throughput capacity of the extruder, adds to the total<br />
cost <strong>and</strong> footpr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>and</strong> greatly <strong>in</strong>creases energy usage.<br />
