INTRODUCTION
Welcome to our Spring Edition
I am delighted to introduce our third Purbrookian
magazine. We aim to celebrate just some of
our pupils’ tremendous achievements over the
last few months.
We are working hard to provide a first class
education for girls and boys from ages
11-16. Our pupils are happy and well behaved
young people who achieve some of the best
examination results in the area.
I would encourage you to contact us, if you

MEDIA
CLUB VISIT THE BBC
On an early, dark December
morning, a handful of
committed Media Club
members filtered through the
school gates and gathered
in Pupil Services with warm
clothes, plenty of snacks and
a thirst for the hours to come.
Before we knew it, a coach full
of wide-awake, wholehearted
pupils had wound its way
through London’s rain
and had found itself under
three huge letters: BBC.
Greeted by the Doctor Who
Tardis and a life-size Dalek, we
realised that it was ordained
to be a star-studded day: it
was such an honour to be at
the heart of British television.
We couldn’t have predicted
how lucky we’d be – we were
able to visit the main offices
as the news was broadcasted
live across the nation. We
could observe the news room
as the reporters hurried,
and see the crew as they
adjusted a complete spectrum
of amazing equipment.
We were introduced to the
new reporting system, which
is sustained by the public;
people who are witnesses
or are affected by breaking
news are asked to send
in their own unique
perspective and any media
collected at the event.
Throughout the course of
the day, we could visit many
different studios including
The Big Fat Quiz Show,
Match of the Day 2 and
the famous Strictly Come
Dancing “ballroom”. It was
so amazing to see what
goes on behind our
television screens!
As well as this, we
took part in a mini
news show, were
contestants on a fake
game show, saw some
beautiful costumes,
and even sat in
David Haye’s dressing
room!
We cannot thank Mr Blair,
Mr Foxley and the BBC
enough for this trip… it
will certainly be one to
remember!

PUPILS AND
PARENTS MATTER
Purbrook Park as their school.
We have a very enthusiastic
PTA who organise major events,
such as Fashion Shows,
our Christmas Fayre, Quiz
Nights and Music festivals.
Pupils are a major part of the
decision making process in
the school. We have an active
School Council, where every
tutor puts forward ideas. We
encourage lively debates! Pupils
are involved in the interview
process for new staff, and show
prospective parents around the
school. We have an Opinions box
that pupils can access and can express
concerns and areas for improvement.
Pupils are encouraged to speak to
their tutors if they have any worries or
fears, or to select a member of staff
to talk to in a confidential manner.
This goes alongside our Pastoral
Team who are always willing to listen.
At Purbrook Park we endeavour to take the
views of Pupils and Parents very seriously.
We listen carefully to comments and do our
best to act upon them in our decision making
process.
We have established a Parents’ Forum
where parents have the opportunity to air
their views in an open and honest way.
We also have an “open door” policy in
which we welcome parents in to discuss
issues with particular teachers or the head
teacher Mr Foxley. We try our hardest to
reply to email contact within two days.
We also have regular Parents’ Evenings
where we discuss academic progress and
pupil welfare, and we are happy to receive
any visitors who are thinking of choosing
We also run a “No Fears” session at
our Partner Primary Schools before
Transition Week, where new pupils can
discuss all their concerns about making
the move from Primary to Secondary
School. We understand what a stressful
time this can be for pupils and parents!

about all our pupils.

Rights, Respect,
Responsibility
After the successful implementation of our
new behaviour policy we are now looking
to move our school community forward with
a charter based on the principles of rights,
respect and responsibility.
Our charter, which will incorporate articles
from the UN convention on the rights of the
child, will encourage all members of the
school community to consider their actions
and the effect they have on others and our
school environment.
To create our charter, everyone’s voice is
important. Staff have already had their input
during a recent professional development
session and parents at the latest parent’s
forum shared their thoughts on this process.
Miss Aggett will now be introducing the theme
in assemblies and tutor activities will support
the pupils in putting their views across.
We are passionate about improving our
school community and creating a learning
environment that everyone is proud of.
Vision
Our vision as a school is to work towards
becoming a UNICEF Rights Respecting
School.
This award recognises achievement in
putting the United Nations Convention on
the Rights of the Child (CRC) at the heart
of our school’s planning, policies, practice
and ethos.

PPS DANCE TEAMS
LONDON & ‘MOVE IT’
Commercial dance, afro jazz, musical theatre and hip hop
On Friday March 8th 2013, Mrs Taylor and Mrs
Smith took 30 pupils up to London to the UK’s
biggest dance conference, ‘Move It’.
The pupils took part in a range of master
classes taught by some of the most current
influential choreographers and performers from
across the world. These included styles such
as commercial dance, afro jazz, musical theatre
and hip hop.
Kimberly Wyatt (currently judging on ‘Got to
Dance’). It was a fantastic day. All the pupils
were brilliant in the workshops and felt inspired
by what they saw. We will definitely be returning
next year.
They also watched performances from many
of the top vocational colleges, current dance
crews, and famous performers such as

SOUTHDOWNS WORKSHOP
For the past 2 Wednesdays students from the
Level 3 Btec Dance course at Southdowns College
have been visiting the year 10 Btec Dance group
to create a new dance piece with them.
The pupils will then be performing in the
Southdowns dance show in the first week of
May.
The year 10s have explored contemporary
dance techniques such as Cunningham,
physical theatre and contact work to create a piece
based on breaking out of normality.
Our pupils have been able to gain a real insight into
what skills they will need to further their dance education
at college as well as forging a friendship with fellow
likeminded dancers.

show; we have been pushed to our physical limits at parts in
the dance and can’t wait to show off what we have learnt!”

ROCK CHALLENGE WORKSHOP
Pupils across all year groups
involved in the Rock Challenge
were treated to a fun filled
workshop with Tega Alex, male
solo hip hop world champion.
“The finale of the show is a real
upbeat piece involving all 80
dancers in the cast and we wanted
to give the pupils a piece that
really challenged and motivated
them.”

YEAR 11 FINAL SHOW ‘RELAPSE’
The Year 11 BTEC dance group have been working
on their final show ‘Relapse’ which is based on ‘dance
though the ages’. Last week, the class went to Purbrook
Junior School, where they performed snippets from their
upcoming show.
They then took two workshops for the whole of Year 6. Our
pupils were an absolute credit to the school and the Junior
School loved it! It was so successful, that the headteacher
of Purbrook Junior School has asked us to return this
week to do exactly the same with the whole of Year 4.
Tega combined street dance skills
with an African dance vibe to get
the dancers twisting, jumping and
pulsing.
‘Some of the footwork was really
hard but it was great to have an
older male dancer in to help inspire
us and make us want to keep up
dancing!’ Mason Brockway.
Rock Challenge takes place on the
25th April at Portsmouth Guildhall
and promises to be another year
of spectacular dance competition.

Able, Gifted and Talented
Developing Links
This year the Able, Gifted and Talented (AG&T) programme has
really developed positive relationships with external agencies.
We now work in partnership with both Havant College and the
University of Chichester in order to provide activities that inspire
and enthuse our AG&T pupils.
The events that we run both aid pupils’ transition between
secondary, further and then Higher Education and show the
pupils the positive benefit of learning and the pathways that their
future could take.

The Duke of Ed
THE PURBROOKIAN
Leading Youth Charity the DofE gives all young people the chance to develop
skills for work and life, fulfil their potential and have a brighter future.
A
significant number of our year ten pupils have
embarked on their journey through the Duke
of Edinburgh’s Award. But what is the Award?
The Award was first set up by HRH the Duke of
Edinburgh in 1956 as a personal development
scheme for boys aged 14-25, with the first 1,000
boys achieving their award one year later. In 1958,
girls were also allowed to join the Award and in 2012,
the number of young people had risen to 83,000.
What does this mean for our pupils? The
Award is a brilliant way to stand out above
others in the competitive employment market.
In a recent study that represented 12% of all
employers in the UK, including many banks, the Civil
Service, Honda, Morrison, Euro-tunnel, Tesco plc and
Vauxhall motors, those questioned rated The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award the single most important activity that
their potential employees could embark upon. Higher
than work experience and other community activities.
The pupils currently following their Award have
started their expedition training, ensuring that
they can take care of themselves in the outdoors
on a self-sufficient expedition. In addition to this
training, they are developing a hobby, a sporting activity
and devoting their own time to a community project.

We take a look at
THE TRUST
Purbrook Park Learning Trust was formed three years ago to safeguard the land
and buildings of Purbrook Park School, and to provide support to the school with
an overview of Teaching and Learning and planning for the future development of
the Purbrook Park Community.
We are extremely fortunate to have a committed group of Trustees who are willing
to give their time and energy to this enterprise.
Paul Evelyn
Chair of the Trust
Paul also works as an education fundraiser for the Charity “Barnardos”, where he
attends schools in the South and South West holding assemblies, fundraising, and
educating children on the many issues they face growing up.
Mr Evelyn has had many years experience in school governance, and is also the Chair
of Governors for the Purbrook Park School Governing Body.
John McDougall - Havant Sixth Form College
John is the Principal and Chief Executive of Havant Sixth Form
College, a high performing College of circa 1300 students, most
of whom are studying GCE ‘A’ Levels with over 80% progressing
on to many of the top Universities.
Havant Sixth Form College has a special relationship with
Purbrook Park School with many pupils progressing to Havant
each year.

Stuart Heaton - The Southern Co-operative
As an Area Operations Manager for The Southern Co-operative, I am responsible
for an area of 18 Community Supermarkets, stores that are positioned within
their local communities and therefore look to support local people and local
good causes.
TSC are a locally based and independent food retailer with in excess of 160
food stores across the south of England and Purbrook Park School sit within a
mile from our head office in the centre of our trading estate.
On behalf of TSC I am able to offer commercial experience to the Trust and as a
local person who grew up in Purbrook, I am passionate about helping to develop
Purbrook Park School into a School to be proud of.
Lyn Surgeon - South Downs College
Lyn took up the post of Principal and Chief Executive of South Downs
College on 1 April 2012. South Downs College has a long-standing
tradition of excellence which has seen the success of countless
students on both A level and Vocational study programmes. Students
are supported to gain entry to the top universities or begin courses
that lead to employment. In 2012 students achieved record A level
results with a fantastic 99.7% pass rate and 44% of entries gaining
A*-B grades.
Lyn said, “I am delighted that students who join us from Purbrook
Park do exceptionally well not only academically but also through
further developing the skills and confidence they gained at school.
28 students from South Downs College took part in the London 2012
Olympics as Games Makers and these included former Purbrook Park
students Jess Hathaway, Sophie Ormston and Lauren Townsend.”

Derek Myers - Hampshire County Council
Derek works in the Children’s Services Department as Senior
Inspector for Inclusion and he is also Headteacher of the Hampshire
Virtual School for Children in Care. He has a proven track record
in school improvement with 25 years experience in education as a
teacher, headteacher, governor, inspector and advisor working in 3
local authorities. Educated in Sefton, Leeds, and Lancaster, Derek
has an MA in Education Research and he maintains an understanding
of current education research and its implications for schools.
He is a Fellow of The Teaching Awards Trust, a past judge and
recipient of the award for school leadership (“Headteacher of the
Year - South).
Mrs Jane Prescott - Headmistress of Portsmouth High School
Portsmouth High School is a leading independent school for girls aged 3
to 18 in the heart of Southsea, Hampshire. The School is part of the GDST
(Girls’ Day School Trust) which is the leading network of independent girls’
schools in the UK.
Mrs Prescott was formerly the Deputy Headmistress of Loughborough High
School and is an enthusiastic advocate of girls’ independent education. She
has a clear set of values and a vision for the future of education, which
matches the ethos of the GDST. She has a keen interest in the innovative
use of ICT in education, and serves on ICT committees for both GDST and
ISC (the Independent School Council).
Jane Prescott is married with one daughter and two sons and before
becoming a teacher served a Short Service Army Commission.

David Furby - Novatech
David is the founder and Managing Director of Novatech Limited. Novatech
supplies, installs and supports a broad range of IT solutions. Our customers
range from individuals who visit our stores and website through to government
and multi national corporations. Our head office is in Portsmouth where we
employ over 200 local people.
David came to Portsmouth in 1984 to study for an Engineering and Business
Studies Degree at what is now the University of Portsmouth. He was one of
the founding Trustees of Purbrook Park Trust and has always been a proud
supporter of the school.
Tony Chafer - Portsmouth University
Tony Chafer is Professor of Contemporary French Area Studies at the University
of Portsmouth and Director of its Centre for European and International Studies
Research. He teaches French Studies, with a particular focus on Frenchspeaking
Africa, and has published widely on Franco-African relations in the late
colonial and post-colonial era. He is the author of “The End of Empire in French
West Africa: France’s Successful Decolonisation?” (Berg 2002).

Alaina Ward
Alaina swims for Portsmouth Northsea Swimming
Club (PNSC) and has done so for two hours every day
sometimes at 5.30 in the morning. She started swimming
when she was just 4 years old at her auntie’s swimming
club, but started swimming for PNSC at 7 years old.
Alaina recently competed in the Hampshire games and
received individual gold medals for 400m individual
medley (5min 50.53 secs) 800 freestyle (10.38.76) and
400m freestyle (5.07.74).

Netball finals.
At the weekend of the 9th March 2013 Alaina became
the fastest 11 year old to cover over 400 metres
freestyle swimming in Hampshire.
JACK BARTER and RYAN NANCARROW
Both boys are aged 13 and play for Havant and Waterlooville who were the
Hampshire Cup winners for 2012 and 2013.
They train every week and have won the Sunday league four years in a row
and the Sunday Portsmouth cup 3 years in a row.
Their aim is to win the European Tournament in Belgium in the summer,
and of course win the league and cup again!

Dylan then chose to play for
Brentford as they had excellent
facilities and excellent opportunities
for younger players. His dream is to
one day play professional football.

who started playing
from a very early age. Performing
mainly on the piano and guitar,
Blake is one of Purbrook Park’s
most revered prodigies.
Aside from the modern-day
classical maestro, jazz and
popular musical cultures dominate
Blake’s repertoire.
Katherine Colley Year 11
The love of music pours from
Katherine as she gets her groove
on with the rhythm section of the
band. Not content with successfully
mastering the drums, Katherine
also plays the bass, acoustic guitar
and ukulele.
As one of Purbrook Parks hardest
working musicians, if she’s not
playing, she’s thinking about it.

Among the small array of Anna’s arsenal is her microphone.
With a divine voice such as hers and an attitude to match,
if there’s anything she’s cut out to do, it’s to sing.
Anna is brilliant with vocal expression; If ever the
opportunity arises to hear Anna perform, you should
consider yourselves truly lucky.

Naomi Lane Year 11
If its heartfelt expression you’re looking for, Eliza is sure
to wow any audience with her artistic capabilities. Her
passion bleeds into her songwriting and performance
abilities and a beaming light of love for music clearly
shines wherever she goes.
Eliza has joined the new wealth of emerging talent at
Purbrook Park.
With Naomi, it is difficult to liken her to any artists that you
can think of. Her uniquely emotional voice boasts a talent
that should have the hairs on your neck standing.
Not satisfied with being adept at tackling the most complicated
of vocal harmonies, Naomi’s skills as a pianist and popular
music writer have taken her to the forefront of Purbrook
Park’s musical craft and she certainly has what it takes to
go even further.

Lewis Matthams Year 10
Lewis has become inseparable from the piano since he pulled
up the bench from childhood. He has garnered a reputation
throughout Purbrook Park for his understanding of not only
the instrument he so beautifully plays, but also for his writing
expertise delivered in a strong, compelling manner.

Liddington on Friday
8th March for a
weekend of coaching
by the Manchester
United Soccer
School Coaches
and Adventurous
activities.
Luckily the Liddington
centre is an ex hotel
so the facilities are
excellent, set in rolling
woodlands with lakes
and forest (ideal for
playing Manhunt in
the dark on Saturday
night!) The pupils
had strategy talks
and coaching by
the Manchester
United coaches,
who constantly
commented on
the ability and
behaviour of our

The pupils were such
a pleasure to be
with, good fun, hard
working, but also
incredibly kind and
supportive to each
other, especially when
they were struggling
to achieve a task, they
really pulled together
- we had incredible
Purbrook Park spirit.

LOCAL COMMUNITY WORK TOGETHER

A group of aspiring
fashion designers
received a great
warm welcome from
lecturers and students
of the University of
Portsmouth.
The students
introduced the pupils to
the textiles department
and showed them
examples of current
projects and their
portfolios of work.
The first workshop, one of three,
introduced the pupils to the idea
of creating new imaginative
designs from old garments, by
deconstructing and customisation.
Some pupils were shy at first but
then got really involved with drawing
and talking about their new designs.
The workshop was an excellent
opportunity for pupils to get creative
and have an insight into further
education.

Ready to strut their stuff on
the catwalk for local
charities
S
ince the PTA
started last year,
we get together regularly
to try and get the parents
and teachers involved
with fun things for the
school while fundraising
as well, writes
parent Karen Hendry.
We thought it would
be a good idea to do a
fashion show because
it’s something the pupils
are interested in.
They are learning
different aspects and
have been going up
to the University of
Portsmouth.
It’s a great opportunity
for them to experience
the sort of thing that’s
outside their normal box.
They are learning new
skills as they do it.
We have been doing ‘Up-
Cycling’ which is where
the pupils take a pair of
jeans or a top and they
change it by converting
it into something better.
This could be by adding
sequins or glitter or extra
bits of material.
It’s using what we
have already got and
changing the form
to make things more
interesting and up to
date.
The girls have worked
with the university who
have acted as mentors.
It’s inspirational
because it gives them
a path from school to
university.
They can see children
who are just like
them going on to do
degrees.
They might not think
that’s possible but this
opens doors for them
and proves that they
can do it.
The whole purpose of
it is to raise the profile
of what the children
are able to do in a fun
way while they are still
learning. It’s building
confidence for them.
And it’s a different
group of people with
the PTA.
We are trying to get
the support of the
community. We want
to get more local
businesses to help us
with things.
We want to get more
parents involved as
well. We don’t have to
have parents coming
in to every meeting.
They don’t have to
commit to being there
all the time.
It does take a lot of
work to do it but if we
have got a few more
hands on board then
that helps. The girls
are looking forward to
it now.
They are excited and
around 50 models are
taking part.
It’s all ranges with
all different shapes
and sizes. It’s good
because it’s pulling all
the younger groups
together. They have
been fantastic.
Proceeds from ticket
sales will go towards
local charities.

PPS TAKES PART IN
World Book Day
“The Reading Room has had its
busiest few days so far”
An eerie calm
descended across PPS
at 1pm on Thursday
March 7th as the
whole school downedtools
and uppedbooks.
To mark World
Book Day, we held our
very first DEAR, ‘Drop
Everything And Read’
and everyone was
given an opportunity
to read whatever
they chose for twenty
minutes.
The date and time
had been agreed far
in advance and pupils
and staff had been
selecting their reading
material for several
days in expectation.
All sorts of things were
brought in for DEAR;
old books and new,
fiction and non-fiction,
even magazines or
newspapers were
welcome.
Before school on the
7th, one boy showed
me his Kindle with the
book he had obtained
especially for DEAR.
Another told me,
breathlessly, that he
was looking forward
to reading his book
on Einstein’s theories;
each to their own, I
suppose.
Thanks to DEAR,
the Reading Room
has had its busiest
few days so far, with
the shelves looking
decidedly lighter.
With any luck, events
such as these will help
to kindle an interest
in books and reading
that will help our young
people to access the
incredible world of
fiction and non-fiction
that they have at their
fingertips and perhaps
someone who enjoys
reading books today,
will go on to love writing
books tomorrow!

MOCK
TRIALS
On Saturday 9th March, a team
of 15 pupils from Purbrook
Park travelled to Southampton
Magistrates’ court to take part
in a Mock Trial competition. The
annual competition is run by the
Citizenship Foundation. It gives
students the opportunity to develop
their speaking and listening skills
in an unfamiliar environment; to
respond to unforeseen events and
to build strong team-working skills.
Our team was made up of
Prosecution Lawyers, Defence
Lawyers, Magistrates, witnesses
and defendants. We also had our
very own Court Artist and Reporter
in the courtroom to record the
proceedings as they occurred.

The whole process was
overseen by our very own
Legal Adviser and Usher
who co-ordinated the
events of the courtroom.
We were accompanied by
Miss Morrison, Miss Goodall
and Mr Doe; they were all
very supportive on the day
and during the planning
process leading up to the trial.
During the day we took part
in two trials, the first one by
the prosecution team and the
second by the defence team.
The case revolved around
the defendant Morgan
Cruickshank, who was
charged jointly with Jane and
Tom Low of assault by beating.
Morgan pleaded not guilty.
In order for us to gain
points we had to be able
to know all of our parts and
cases off by heart, speak
confidently and have little
reliance on our scripts.
In our first trial, we competed
against The Westgate
School. The prosecution
lawyers were Charlie Knight
and I. We were told to enter
the court remembering
the saying ‘’ Innocent till
proven guilty’’. Fortunately
for us we triumphed and
Morgan was found guilty.
For us to take part in the trial,
we had to understand section
39 of the Criminal Justice Act
1988, the roles of the court
and how to behave in a court.

We won the
first trial
In the second trial, we competed against
Upper Shirley High. Our defence lawyers
were Ruby Wallis and Alice Kaminski. Ruby
and Alice prepared some very interrogating
cross-examinations and a fantastic closing
speech, however Upper Shirley High proved
Morgan guilty. On the whole, Purbrook had a
stronger case with definite facts and evidence.
We couldn’t have had the day we did without the
on-going support from our teachers; we can’t
thank them enough for their help.
For me it has made me think about different
career paths and not to judge a book by its cover!
Everyone from Purbrook Park did a really good
job and we all really enjoyed the day. We felt very
professional and the day was full of high spirits.

Facilities
Purbrook Park School is a beautiful building, based
on a Georgian manor house. It has a number
of facilities which are available to be hired
out for a wide range of events and
activities, with or without catering.
Our
spacious dining
hall has a capacity
for up to 250 people
and is often hired for a
wide range of functions.
Catering can be provided by
our in house chef along with a
wide range of menus available.
The impressive sport facilities including playing
fields; gym and our sports hall has indoor cricket/
football nets, table tennis and badminton

teaching six languages to degree level (French, German, Italian,
