OBJECTIVE
CONTENTS
This MSc course will allow you to diagnose and quantify
important plant diseases in agricultural crops. You will learn
hands-on diagnostic methods for fungi, viruses and bacteria,
ranging from molecular techniques and microscopy in
the lab to visual disease assessments in field crops.
You will be introduced to common plant diseases in agricultural
crops. The course is based on short introductory
sessions followed by practical exercises in the lab or in the
field. The exercises aim at assessing and quantifying diseases
using manuals, assessment keys and scales, as well
as microscopy, ELISA and PCR-based methods.
The exercises are carried out in small groups under the supervision
of teachers, providing the opportunity to study
specific subjects in more detail.
ABOUT THE FACULTY
ABOUT FLAKKEBJERG
The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Aarhus University,
offers BSc, MSc and PhD programmes in up-to-date and
relevant topics such as biotechnology, climate, environment,
bioenergy, food, and agriculture. Studies at DJF

with state-of-the art equipment and facilities.

The Department of Integrated Pest Management is
located in Flakkebjerg, 10 km south of Slagelse, with
good possibilities of public transportation to Copenhagen.
We have 6,500 m 2 of laboratories, greenhouses
and semi-field facilities and 175 ha of experimental
area as well as library, offices and canteen. We are experts
in integrated pest management for the control of
plant diseases, pests and weeds.

ACADEMIC PREREQUISITES
METHOD OF EVALUATION
Basic courses (BSc) in microbiology or plant
pathology are recommended.
TEACHERS
Two project reports based on course activities must be
completed during the course. The exam is based on a presentation
of a report and an oral defence and discussion
with teachers and examinator. The exam is assessed as
passed/not passed.

COURSE SETTING
• Duration: 10 days summer course from 4 to15 July
2011.
• Hours per week: 37. We expect one week of preparation
prior to the course. The course is completed
by the acceptance of a project report.
• Credits: 5 ECTS
• Maximum number of students: 16.
• Costs: The course is free of charge for EU/
EEA students. Non-EU/EEA citizens are liable
to pay tuition fee unless they are already
enrolled in the MSc Programme in Agrobiology.
You can buy food in the canteen at Flakkebjerg,
which is open from Monday to Friday.
