Ocean surface currents in <strong>the</strong> New Zealand Regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />
The Tasman Fr<strong>on</strong>t (TF), <strong>the</strong> Subtropical Fr<strong>on</strong>t<br />
(STF), and <strong>the</strong> Subantarctic Fr<strong>on</strong>t (SAF) approach<br />
New Zealand from <strong>the</strong> west. The STF represents<br />
<strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> Subtropical Water (STW) and<br />
Subantarctic Water (SAW), while <strong>the</strong> SAF is formed<br />
by <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> SAW and Circumpolar Surface<br />
Water (CSW). The fr<strong>on</strong>ts c<strong>on</strong>tain or generate<br />
currents and <strong>the</strong>re are several permanent eddies<br />
<strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> eastern North Island (EAUC, East Auckland<br />
Current; WAUC, West Auckland Current; ECC, East<br />
Cape Current; DC, D’Urville Current; WC, Westland<br />
Current; SC, Southland Current; ACC, Antarctic<br />
Circumpolar Current; NCE, North Cape Eddy; ECE,<br />
East Cape Eddy; WE, Wairarapa Eddy) There are also<br />
areas <strong>of</strong> tidal mixing in Foveaux Strait, between<br />
Stewart Island and <strong>the</strong> South Island, in Cook Strait,<br />
between <strong>the</strong> North and South Islands, and North <strong>of</strong><br />
