Strong Tides Stymie Tug Salvage
Salvage efforts to recover the 64-year-old tug, the
Island Ranger, which has been partially submerged
since running aground off Tofino’s Crab Dock in late
November, have run into problems because of strong
tides, says the boat’s owner. Jeff Stubbington, the
owner of the Island Ranger and Hustler Tug and
Barge, had brought in a barge and crane from
Ladysmith to refloat the 110-tonne, 20.4-metre-long
tugboat, which is based in Ladysmith. But he said the
efforts to right the tug, which is worth about $1
million, have been stymied by the tide.
“We’ve had the boat up twice and we can’t keep it upright in the tide. There’s so much tide,” he said.
“So we’re going to drill in some 24-inch steel pilings alongside the boat and pull it up against the
pilings.” Stubbington told the Westcoaster.ca that his salvage crew if now waiting for the delivery of
drilling equipment from the B.C. Interior, which he doesn’t expect to arrive in Tofino until Dec. 28. He
estimates it could then take another week to get the tugboat righted and out of the water. The
damaged vessel would then be taken back to Ladysmith for repairs. The owner declined to say how
the salvage effort is costing, but does note, “It’s not cheap.” There are about 800 gallons of diesel fuel
still in the Island Ranger’s tanks, which will be pumped out once the recovery is complete. The
tugboat, which has been labelled a “classic” – built back in 1944 – ran aground off the Crab Dock on
the evening of Nov. 30. Stubbington, who was at the wheel, and two crew members were unhurt in the
accident. The Island Ranger had dropped off a float camp at Rankin Inlet and was on its way back at
the time of the accident. (Source: Westcoaster; Photo Gary Kleaman)
