A new book co-authored by <strong>Planet</strong> <strong>Retail</strong>’s Natalie Berg warns that Walmart must rec<strong>on</strong>figure for<br />

future growth if it <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> to retain its positi<strong>on</strong> <strong>as</strong> world’s largest retailer.<br />

Publ<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g>hed in <strong>the</strong> company’s 50 th year, Walmart: Key Insights and Practical Less<strong>on</strong>s from <strong>the</strong> World’s<br />

Largest <strong>Retail</strong>er urges <strong>the</strong> retailer to incre<strong>as</strong>e its focus <strong>on</strong> multi-channel retailing, internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

operati<strong>on</strong>s and underpenetrated urban locati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

“Walmart h<strong>as</strong> reached a turning point. Its core business philosophy <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> quickly eroding due to <strong>the</strong><br />

growth of <strong>on</strong>line retailing and a broader c<strong>on</strong>sumer shift towards smaller stores. Walmart h<strong>as</strong> been<br />

planting big boxes for <strong>the</strong> p<strong>as</strong>t 50 years but, like its global peers Tesco and Carrefour, <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> struggling<br />

to maintain its relevance in today’s digital world,” said Natalie Berg.<br />

According to <strong>Planet</strong> <strong>Retail</strong>, competitor Amaz<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> expected to c<strong>on</strong>tinue to work its way up <strong>the</strong> global<br />

rankings from its current positi<strong>on</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s 25th largest retailer to become <strong>the</strong> sec<strong>on</strong>d largest<br />

global retailer behind Walmart by 2016, with sales of around USD170 billi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

“Th<str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> book <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g> really about growth – how Walmart did it and, more importantly, just how much of it <str<strong>on</strong>g>is</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
