Cura Personalis...Care for the Whole Person
Each week I take my turn in the morning greeting line of our school, offering students a handshake and
light-hearted words of encouragement to begin their school day. This loving, personal presence is a
concrete expression of the value which we, and all Jesuit schools, place on cura personalis, or caring for the
whole person. The morning greeting line conveys to our students: Jazmin (or Jessica or David or Jesús),
I care about you. God cares about you!
A commitment to cura personalis pervades our school. In the classroom, teachers guide students to ask for
support when necessary. Our two social workers meet with almost half of the students on a regular basis to
support them as they work through complex emotional issues.
Away from school, the Corporate Work Study Program team checks in frequently with student workers,
leading with the question ‘Do you feel safe at work?’ And then they ask, ‘How can we and your supervisor
support you to be successful?’ Extra-curricular activities — chess club, choir, dance, student government,
theater, and sports — offer creative outlets in the midst of a demanding school day and work week, bringing
balance to the equation of caring for the mind, body and spirit of our students.
Meanwhile, post-secondary education is vital to our mission. Starting as early as 9th grade, our college
counselor de-mystifies the college selection process, recruiting families for local road trips to visit college
campuses, while also recruiting bi-lingual professionals to inform and assist families with the financial aid
process. Once accepted to college for the first time, there is an all-school ceremony in which the seniors’
names appear in bright lights on the big screen of our auditorium, and they come forward one by one to
receive a coveted “Accepted” t-shirt.
Finally, our gradate support coordinator and I team up to visit every one of our graduates on their college
campuses before Thanksgiving of their freshman year, thereby delivering a new version of the old message:
We still care about you! Your perseverance and success is ours too.
Thank you for your role in assisting us to provide the cura personalis which transforms our students to
become the young men and women God desires.
Care for the Whole Student
Students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School are expected to perform:
demonstrating standards in the classroom; completing assigned tasks
in the workplace; and competing on the soccer field, basketball court
or track.
In 2012-13, we can now include “on the stage” as our drama club
wrote and performed a play in the winter entitled, “The Trouble
with Sandy,” about an eclectic group of Fashion Week participants
stranded in a New York City hotel during the hurricane. The drama
club then collaborated with the choir to perform the musical
“The Frog Prince” in the spring.
Witnessing our students perform, no matter the venue, is impressive
on the surface. Students solved polynomial inequalities in
Mathematics and argued the benefits of non-monetary incentives
in Economics. Students scored goals in soccer, blocked shots in
basketball and entertained with their voices, humor and expressions on the stage. Below the surface, our students have
practiced, stumbled and overcome the challenges all students experience and more. Close to half of our students meet
with counselors (social workers) to help manage academic behaviors, social and emotional health and life situations
pertaining to family issues: conflict, immigration, unemployment, loss, or substance abuse. Our students are also buoyed
up by their supportive teachers, counselors, staff and most importantly their relationship with God, developed through
our Campus Ministry programs prayer services, Chapel visits, monthly Masses and annual retreats.
The Class of 2013 experienced the first ever Kairos retreat on the shores of Lake Sylvia in Annandale, Minnesota. This
three day faith sharing event was a time to listen, reflect and share with God, their peers and the retreat leaders. Initial
skepticism, “Is this a MANDATORY graduation expectation?” became 98% of Seniors reporting that it was their most
important experience at our school on the end of year Exit Survey.
Our students are honing their skills academically, physically, socially and spiritually to perform successfully in life.
SHPE Sparks STEM Interest
In 2010, Medtonic, Inc. joined our list of Corporate Work Study Program
partners. It was soon thereafter that James Rodriguez contacted Principal
Jeb Myers about forming a partnership. James Rodriguez is the Minnesota
Chapter President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
and Medtronic engineer.
Rodriguez and his group wanted to reach out to the community to ignite more
interest in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or
STEM. They proposed an event, Noche de Ciencias (Night of Science), where
students and their families could not only witness, but also participate in
various projects and experiences.
SHPE brought Noche de Ciencias to our school in the Fall of 2012. Students
and families were energized about STEM and excited about bringing interest
to the class. Rodriguez and Mr. Myers shared with the group that Noche de Ciencias was just the beginning and SHPE
would become a permanent club at our school as a Junior Chapter.
A group of 17 students met twice a week with Rodriguez and faculty advisor and Physics and Calculus teacher, Mr. Eric
Hartz, to learn about different areas of STEM. The students ventured to college campuses and heard from real-world
professionals about STEM. Gizel Ojeda Gomez ’14, the group’s president, even had the opportunity to work in an
engineering internship this summer at Medtronic that has continued as her Corporate Work Study job this school year.
She says, “Medtronic gave me an amazing amount of engineering experience and problem-solving skills that I have
been applying to my everyday life.”
As SHPE enters its second year with our school, Mr. Hartz has seen the effects of SHPE in his classroom. “SHPE has been a
great outlet for our creative and talented students. The students have been able to see how the work they do in science and
math applies to real world careers. As a result, classroom engagement and performance have improved tremendously.”
Students Inducted into National Honor Society
In December 2012, 14 juniors and ten seniors became the first members of the
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School National Honor Society (NHS) Chapter.
Only 31 students in the school had a high enough cumulative GPA to apply
for the prestigious society. The application process included documenting
work, service and leadership experience, writing an essay, and obtaining
teacher recommendations. A faculty council reviewed applications and
chose the 24 candidates.
Students and their families were invited to a special banquet to celebrate their
induction. Each student lit a candle from the customary NHS “honor” candle
and signed our school’s NHS registry as the first inductees.
NHS members are leaders in our school community. They work hard to maintain
their high academic standing and continue to give back to their communities.
Faculty advisor, Mr. Nicolas Contreraz, advocated bringing NHS to our school. “We wanted a formal way to
recognize our exceptional students and the hard work they produce on a consistent basis. NHS will help our students
develop as servant leaders to our school community as well as to the greater Twin Cities.”
Cristo Rey Network Annual Meeting
This past April, presidents, principals, work-study directors, board chairs,
religious sponsors and Cristo Rey Network (CRN) staff came to Minneapolis
for the CRN Annual Meeting. We were very proud to show the other 25 CRN
schools the really great thing we have going here.
Tuesday night participants attended Mass at St. Olaf Catholic Church in
Minneapolis celebrated by Fr. John Foley, S.J., founder of Cristo Rey Jesuit High
School in Chicago and the Cristo Rey Network. Fr. Foley preached about the ambitious growth plan of the network and
called member schools to “hope for the ridiculous.” Mass was followed by a dinner at the University of St. Thomas (UST)
School of Law, with keynote speaker, Dr. Carol Bruess. Dr. Bruess’ Communications course at UST has partnered with our
freshmen English class for the past six years as part of a service learning project.
The main attraction, however, was Wednesday night when three coach buses full of high school administrators arrived at
Cristo Rey Jesuit H.S. The visitors exited the buses with gasps, sighs, and exclamations of “wow” as they marveled in the
beauty of our school and the poised student ambassadors who greeted them.
The visit included Mass, student–led tours, and a reception followed by dinner and fellowship. To end the evening, our
visitors enjoyed a highlight reel of videos from our annual campus visits with our graduates.
What a pleasure to share our school and showcase our students with our Cristo Rey family from across the country!
We look forward to hosting again in another 25 years!
Seniors Experience Kairos
Preparing our students for success in college and life is our most
important priority. And our students work hard every day to make that
a reality. However, as our school culture has evolved over the years, we
realized that we wanted our students to apply that same rigor to their
spiritual development as well as their academic.
In comes our senior retreat experience, Kairos. Kairos, a Greek word
meaning “living on God’s time”, has a strong tradition in Jesuit schools.
It allows students the opportunity to step away from their every life and
obligations in order to reflect on their own faith life and relationships
with God and others.
Over a dozen members of our community who had their own Kairos experience joined our campus ministry team seven
months before the retreat to plan this important weekend for our seniors.
Ms. Colleen Smith, Campus Minister, says, “We could not have asked for a better first experience for our seniors!
Students were inspired and moved by the sincerity and honesty of their teachers who shared stories of their own
struggles and triumphs. Their hearts were on fire with love for God and each other.”
For Carissa Sanchez ’13, the Kairos retreat was a formative experience. “It brought me closer to my classmates and my
teachers as well. It showed me beyond the smiles I saw every day at school and I got to know more about them. Overall,
I can say Kairos sealed up my last days in Cristo Rey and it was one of the best experiences of my four years!”
Carissa’s sentiments are evident in our school culture this year as younger students are anticipating their own retreats.
“There is hardly a day that goes by when I am not asked by one student or another, ‘Mrs. Smith, when is OUR retreat?’”
Care for the Whole Worker
Corporate Work Study Program
Each day I see a quarter of our student body load the vans or school buses to depart for their jobs. I am always amazed.
So much goes into making this a successful daily venture: attendance, bag lunches, transportation routes, drivers
showing up, checking school uniforms, giving encouraging words for a good and productive day, and hoping all goes
well at work.
Urban Youth meet Corporate America. Corporate America
meet Urban Youth.
This is where Cura Personalis enters. It is at Medtronic where
Alfred ’14 gains practical experience in engineering or student
Emerald ’13 shadows a surgeon at Regions Hospital. It is student
Aminata ’14 learning that as a customer service agent at Delta, not
everyone is friendly or student Brisseida ’16 at Open Arms of MN
filling boxes of food for the homebound that are too sick to cook their
own food. It is supervisor Angela saying she doesn’t know how she did
her job without her student workers or supervisor Emily claiming she
stays in her current role so she can continue to supervise our students.
Our Corporate Work Study Program is more than an exchange of
resources, services for compensation. It is an avenue through which
students and employers experience Cura Personalis.
Our students care for their supervisors,
our supervisors care for our students.
AgMotion: Four Generations
of Partnership
Neither Abraham Zhanay ’11 nor any of his four siblings had heard
of the commodities trader, AgMotion, before Abraham started
at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Nevertheless, he and his three
siblings, William ’13, Nelson ’15, and Sara ’17, became critical
members of the AgMotion team.
From left to right: Nelson, Supervisor Barb Obinger,
William, Sara, Abraham, and CEO Rolf Peters
When AgMotion CEO, Rolf Peters, first heard about the Corporate
Work Study Program (CWSP) in 2007, he never imagined the value
it would create for his company. “When I first heard about it I thought, okay, we can have someone sit here, count
paperclips and run errands. But because these students are smart and motivated, we’re at the point where we rely on
them. We can’t really get along without them.”
It all started in 2007 with Abraham. He was the first student-worker to join the AgMotion team. Barb Obinger, Executive
Assistant, was his supervisor. “To be honest, I thought to myself, ‘This kid isn’t going to make it.’ Boy, did I eat my words later.”
Abraham proved to be a hard worker, dedicating himself to each task that Barb assigned. “My dad always told me if you
work hard, you will get respect. And that is what I have gotten by working here, respect.” He was even recognized as
CWSP’s Employee of the Month during his freshman year.
Abraham gladly returned to AgMotion his sophomore year and shared with Obinger that he had a younger brother in
8th grade who was also interested in working at AgMotion. Barb met William and requested he be placed at AgMotion.
In 2009, William started at AgMotion, working an alternate day to Abraham, with a lot to prove. Not only was this
his first job, but he felt certain expectations of being a Zhanay. “Abraham set the bar really high. I felt like it was an
obligation for me to meet that bar and pass it if I could.” Abraham commented about the sibling rivalry, “I’ve got these
guys on my tail!”
Abraham graduated in 2011 only to be followed by Nelson and this year, Sara. Obinger observed, “The Zhanays get
smarter and smarter. Sara knows her job. And it’s an important job because the paperwork that she processes today
generates our receivables that go out tomorrow. I never have to come in the next day and finish them.”
Thinking back on the impact of Cristo Rey Jesuit H.S. at AgMotion, Peters realizes, “Wow, going back six years, it’s
possible that Cristo Rey students have cataloged several billions of dollars worth of transactions.”
But for Obinger it is more than the invoices, “I am blessed to be able to be a part of this family and to connect with
Cristo Rey to help encourage and educate these students. I am blessed to be a part of their lives.”
From the mouth of babes: What Students Say About Supervisors
8
“She always goes out of her way to help me to feel strong,
confident and brave. She makes me feel as if nothing is impossible.“
“Not only does he help me become a better
worker, but also to become a better person.”
“She cares about what goes on in my life and always
asks me about school and how my week is going.”
Students worked in 90 companies and
organizations throughout the Twin Cities.
Our corporate partners make our school possible. Last year, our students earned
nearly $1.7 million toward the cost of their education. But they gained so much more.
Their supervisors and mentors guide them through a corporate environment and teach
them invaluable skills that they will use not only during their four years at our school, but
long after. THANK YOU to our partners for all you do for our students and our school.
Care for the Whole College Student
Cura Personalis is key in College Counseling and Graduate Support. We know
that our students need financial, emotional, and social care in order to be
academically successful in college.
In College Counseling, students’ families are included in the path to college.
We organize Saturday college trips to introduce the whole family to university
life. We offer support to families to understand a student’s financial aid package.
We provide help in weighing a student’s options for paying for college.
The Graduate Support Program is a unique extension of college counseling that
focuses not only on retaining our talented students in college, but on also providing
the means to self-determination. We teach them to ask the right questions and to
advocate for themselves using campus resources. We offer logistical, academic and
financial guidance to our college students and troubleshoot in matters that would
otherwise inhibit them from continuing their studies.
Graduate Support continues our mission by encouraging our students to achieve their college aspirations and providing
the tools to get there. We care for the whole person by caring through the whole process.
Finding Herself in India
Attending college in California was not an easy transition for Kiara Machuca ’11, now a
Junior at Santa Clara University. “I knew nobody! I had no family, no friends.” Despite
the challenges of being far away from her parents in Richfield, MN Kiara has made
a home in Santa Clara. She is president of her sorority, Lambda Sigma Gamma, and
serves on the university’s LEAD council, which assists prospective First Generation
students and families. She has even spoken at fundraising events for the new Cristo Rey
school opening in San Jose, CA next year.
But Kiara’s most memorable college experience thus far was her fellowship this
past summer in Calcutta, India with the Destiny Foundation, a non-governmental
organization focusing on providing support to sex-trafficking victims through
counseling, healthcare and vocational training. As a marketing student, Kiara was
tasked with introducing two new products that the Destiny Foundation women could
make and subsequently be sold in the U.S. In her six weeks in Calcutta, Kiara not
only designed two new products, but also improved the inventory and quality control
systems of the organization.
Returning to her Junior year at Santa Clara, Kiara is more committed than ever to her studies. “I am very thankful that I got
to go to India because my life was changed! It opened my eyes. I want to help other people with my business knowledge.”
And she hasn’t forgotten about where she came from. Kiara often drops in to our school when home on break, “Cristo
Rey helps me to rejuvenate myself.”
“You know what we say each morning, ‘Guided by Faith, Prepared for Life and Serving Others.’ Being in college, I’ve
really realized that ‘serving others’ is important. Cristo Rey instilled that in me. It’s still engrained in me to give back.”
Supporting Our Graduates: From Sea to Shining Sea
Our students’ success continues through college. Seventy-five percent of our graduates are enrolled in a twoor
four-year college or university. This is amazing considering that according to the National Student Clearinghouse,
only 54 percent of college students, regardless of their demographical background, complete a degree within six
years. Currently our graduates are studying in over 40 different college and universities in 14 states and the District of
Columbia. Two members of the Class of 2011 even graduated from two-year schools.
Recently, all faculty/staff were asked what makes our school different.
Again and again, the answers were that it’s adults who care - teachers,
administrators, employers, and volunteers – who prepare our students
academically for success in college, teach them job skills for future
employment and form young men and women to serve God through their lives.
But, those teachers, administrators, employers and volunteers are not the
only adults who care.
Without you, and the other donors listed on the next few pages, our
students would not be able to attend a Jesuit, private, college-preparatory
high school. Our students would not be learning real-world job skills at their Corporate Work Study Program sites, skills
that uniquely position them for future employment. Our students would not be taught to value themselves as well as
others.
You truly care for our students. We are blessed to have friends like you who believe in our mission and have the same
high expectations that prepare our students for success in college and in life. Our hardworking students need the
confidence, the skills and the knowledge to move forward. You give them this opportunity.
Thank you.
The Frog Prince
When Ms. Michelle Porter started as our choir director in 2012, she
was determined to increase student involvement in the Arts. “We have
creative and talented students! I can’t wait to see it in action.”
Ms. Porter got hard to work coordinating Mass music and a Christmas
Choir Concert. And when spring came around, it was time to bring the
program to the next level: a musical.
Orchestrating our first school musical involved a lot of moving parts.
Ms. Porter directed the music. Ms. Rachel Swartz, Lasallian Volunteer,
directed the actors. And Mr. Howard Hernandez, a Jesuit Volunteer,
directed the stage crew.
Students worked long and hard to execute the production: making sets, learning lines and fitting costumes. But it
all came together and the final result was a beautiful show. Both performances were well attended and brought the
audiences to their feet for standing ovations.
The bar has been set high for future shows, but surely our students will rise to the occasion. Already this year, more
students are involved in choir and we are anticipating another fabulous musical.
TEACHER RECOGNITION
In December 2012, we hosted our Sixth Annual “You’ve Made a
Difference Teacher Recognition Reception.” Ninth grade students
wrote letters to former teachers and mentors inviting them to the
event beginning with the sentence, “You have made a difference
in my life because…” Sixty-seven teachers from 42 schools and
organizations attended the event.
Helen Dahlman, president of Risen Christ Catholic School, was
recognized with a special honor, the Saint Alberto Hurtado Award
for “leadership in addressing social change through education.”
