Father Vitalis Benza was Ordained to the Priesthood at St. Barbara’s Mission on the 19 th August,
2000.
2001 Father Sean Coughlan returned to Ireland on the 27 th of February 2001 and Father Paul
McChrystal came to Zimbabwe on the 3 rd of March 2001. Sister Theresa Nyadombo was elected
Mother General of the Carmelite Sisters during August 2001. Paul Horan came to Mutare during
August 2001 and Robert Kelly came during December 2001.
2002 Doctor Irene von Furstenberg was affiliated to the Carmelite Order during January 2002 at a
ceremony at the Pastoral Centre Mutare. Frederick Chiromba replaced Peter Toner as Administrator
of the Cathedral Mutare on the 24 th February, 2002. Constantine Masarira graduated in London on
the 15 th of July 2002. Father Barty McGivern died in Mutare on the 25 th of September 2002. Father
Barty spent fifty two years in Ministry in Zimbabwe. A hard and gentle working Priest who served his
God faithfully. He is still remembered for his pastoral zeal and gentle disposition. May his soul rest in
peace.
2003 Archbishop Patrick Chakaipa of Harare died on the 8 th of April 2003. May his soul rest in
peace. The Carmelite Sisters began ministry at St. Kilian’s Mission on the 10 th of May 2003. Fathers
Anthony Scerri and Carlos Mesters visited Zimbabwe and Mocambique during May and June 2003.
Avila Mission celebrated their Golden Jubilee on the 30 th of May 2003. The Provincial Chapter took
place at Gort Muire during June 2003. Fintan Burke began his second term as Provincial and John
McGrath began his third term as Commissary Provincial. Bishop Donal Lamont died in Ireland on
the 14 th of August 2003.
The four articles which follow are all regarding the late Bishop Donal Lamont, O.Carm. (1911-2003).
One is the homily given at his funeral in Terenure College on the 18 th August, 2003, by C.
O’Donnell, O.Carm. The other three articles were scanned from ‘Causa Nostrae Laetitiae’, Spring
2004 (pages 27-39) and ‘Carmeletter Zimbabwe’, 2/2003 (pages 2-5).
