After graduating from the Shidler College in 2009, I decided to join the
Peace Corp. It’s been about two years now since I moved to the very rural,
remote highlands of Madagascar where I am currently working as a small
enterprise development volunteer. This experience has been unique and
rewarding to say the least, and not without its share of challenges as well.
Among other projects, I’ve been working with four farming cooperatives to
help them start Village Savings and Loans (VSL) associations which are kind of
like small credit unions. I have also been working with a group of high school
girls from my village in a program called “Project Mpandraharaha Tanora”
(Young Entrepreneurs’ Club). The program provides start-up capital and training
to help students start their own small businesses.
Though it may not be the glamorous life, the past year has definitely
taught me more about myself, and the world and I find myself eager to share
my experiences with the people back home. One day, I hope to come back
to campus and talk about life in Madagascar—my work, village life, the Peace
Corps, Malagasy culture and cuisine. I would like to give back in some small
way to the school which gave me the education to pursue my dreams, see the
world, and help others who are less fortunate. Without the Shidler College I
would not have had the foundation to pursue these wonderful things.
