ABBREVIATED PRESCRIBING INFORMATION:
Viramune® 200mg tablets (nevirapine). See SPC before
prescribing. INDICATION VIRAMUNE is indicated as
part of combination therapy for the antiviral treatment
of HIV-1 infected patients with advanced or progressive
immunodeficiency. DOSAGE Adults: One 200 mg
tablet daily for the first 14 days followed by one 200
mg tablet twice daily, in combination with at least two
additional antiretroviral agents. Paediatric patients:
Oral suspension, which can be dosed according to
body weight. CONTRAINDICATIONS VIRAMUNE
should not be readministered to patients who have
required permanent discontinuation for severe rash,
rash accompanied by constitutional symptoms,
hypersensitivity reactions, or clinical hepatitis due to
nevirapine. VIRAMUNE should not be used in patients
with severe hepatic impairment. Administration with
rifampicin and preparations containing St John’s Wort
is not recommended. SPECIAL WARNINGS AND
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR USE The first 18 weeks
of therapy with VIRAMUNE are a critical period which
requires close monitoring of patients to disclose the
potential appearance of severe and lifethreatening
skin reactions (including cases of Stevens-Johnson
syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis) or serious
hepatitis/hepatic failure. The greatest risk of hepatic
events and skin reactions occurs in the first 6 weeks

of therapy. However, the risk of any hepatic event
continues past this period and monitoring should
continue at frequent intervals. Female gender and
higher CD4 counts at the initiation of therapy place
patients at greater risk of hepatic adverse events. Unless
the benefit outweighs the risk VIRAMUNE should not be
initiated in adult females with CD4 cell counts greater
than 250 cells/mm3 or in adult males with CD4 cell
counts greater than 400 cells/mm3 . POST-EXPOSURE-
PROPHYLAXIS is strongly discouraged. PREGNANCY
AND LACTATION VIRAMUNE should only be used
during pregnancy if the expected benefit justifies the
possible risk to the child. It is recommended that HIVinfected
mothers do not breast-feed their infants. MOST
FREQUENTLY REPORTED ADVERSE EVENTS rash,
nausea, fatigue, fever, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea,
abdominal pain and myalgia. INTERACTIONS
Ketoconazole or rifampicin or St John’s Wort and
VIRAMUNE should not be given concomitantly. ACTIVE
INGREDIENT nevirapine PRESENTATIONS, PACK
SIZES 60 tablets of 200 mg nevirapine in blisters.
240 ml Oral suspension of 50 mg/5 ml in bottles.

EaCS which is being organised under the auspices of the European aIDS Clinical Society (EaCS).
We will strive for the conference to offer an exciting scientific programme, composed of a wellbalanced
mix of plenary lectures as well as abstract-driven sessions presenting the latest original
research in the field of HIv medicine.
one of the important goals of the EaCS in organising the European aIDS Conference is to promote
an interest in clinical HIv research amongst young researchers/clinicians at an early stage in their
career, including those from Central and (South)-Eastern Europe. therefore, we would particularly
like to encourage such junior researchers to submit results from their scientific work to the conference
and also to use it as a venue for networking with colleagues in the field.

The European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS)
the European aIDS Clinical Society (EaCS) is
a not-for-profit scientific society of European
clinicians and researchers, active in the field
of HIv/aIDS. Established in 1991, the society
has about 600 members. It is currently chaired
by prof. peter reiss from the netherlands as
president and prof. manuel battegay from
Switzerland as vice-president.

The main activities of the society are:
Organisation of the European AIDS
Conference/EACS
this is the most comprehensive European
HIv/aIDS meeting, which is held every two
years in a different European city.
Issuing Treatment Guidelines
the European aIDS Clinical Society/EaCS
established a panel of European HIv treating
physicians who produced the European
aIDS Clinical Society guidelines which were
designed to assist in the care of HIv patients
and to establish a standard of clinical practice
across Europe.

and extension of these guidelines during the
upcoming conference in Cologne.

EuropEan aIDS ClInICal SoCIEty (EaCS)
Education and Training of HIV-Physicians
the EaCS provides scholarships to young
physicians through three educational programmes:
1) the “medical Exchange programme for HIvphysicians”
and the “one year fellowship
programme” offer up to one year of training
in one of the 16 clinical centres affiliated
with the EaCS across Europe.
2) the “European advanced HIv Course”
which is held every year in September in
montpellier, france and is intended for
physicians managing HIv-infection and
having a basic knowledge of it. the course
is divided between plenary sessions and
a series of related workshops. the 2008
course was attended by 53 students from
37 different countries.
3) the “Eastern Europe programme”: a training
programme directed towards russian
speaking physicians. It aims to provide instruction
on how to best set up and organise
appropriate care for HIv-Infected persons.
this programme is run out of the Hospital
of Infectious Diseases aIDS Diagnosis and
therapy Center in Warsaw, poland.

tHE CIty of ColognE
Cologne, founded by the romans in 50 aD is
a city with different facets and faces – a small
town but an international major city. this is
due in part to its ever-changing history but
also to its people.
Even today, artefacts such as the city wall or
the roman water system provide evidence of
its rich roman history. parts of the old town
(altstadt) reflect almost 2,000 years of history.
Cologne is the metropolis on the river rhine:
a cultural centre, a media centre, an economic
centre and, especially, a fair and conference
centre. Cologne, with its numerous museums,
churches, theatres, restaurants and bars is the
fourth largest city in germany.
the Cologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom), whose
spires measure 157 m in height, is the bestknown
building and Cologne’s landmark. the
foundation stone of the Cologne Cathedral
was set in 1248, but the cathedral was not
completed until 1880. also well-known in
addition to the Cologne Cathedral, are the
12 roman collegiate, monastery and convent
churches.

Several radio and tv-stations having their
headquarters in Cologne have contributed to
the natural growth of an active arts scene.
Cologne is the home of the famous “photokina”
and “art Cologne” and also to countless art
galleries.
Cologne is famous for two other things: the
carnival and the “Kölsch”. the carnival has its
peak with the traditional “rosenmontagsumzug”
parade in february, however, the carnival
season will be kicked off on november 11 at
11.11 a.m. “Kölsch” is the traditional beer,
which can only be called “Kölsch” if brewed
in Cologne.
the city of Cologne will be an excellent host for
the 12th European aIDS Conference/EaCS.

the conference venue offers numerous session
rooms and foyers as well as generous exhibition
space. based on its optimal location close
to the city centre of Cologne and its excellent
transport connections, the conference venue is
the ideal location for the 12th European aIDS
Conference/EaCS. the conference venue (station/stop
Köln messe/Deutz) can be reached
by train (Deutsche bahn), by regional train
(S-bahn), by tram and by car and motorway
(autobahn).

Exceptionally, the Scientific Committee of
the 12th European aIDS Conference/EaCS
will allow high quality abstracts that have
been previously accepted and presented at
the 11th International Workshop on adverse
Drug reactions and Co-morbidities in HIv
to be held in philadelphia, uSa from october
26 – 28, 2009, to also be submitted to the
12th European aIDS Conference/EaCS.

the national currency in germany is the Euro

Invited speakers and oral abstract presenters
must report to the Speaker Centre at least
four hours prior to their presentation in order
to check and deposit their presentation.
Taxis
taxis are available throughout the city of
Cologne, especially at the airport, train stations
and hotels.
Transportation
fortunately, most of Cologne can be reached
by foot. However, with Cologne’s public transportation,
whether going by metro, bus, or taxi
you can be sure you’ll have a safe, comfortable
ride. a free ticket for the use of the public
