COLORED WAX RECORDINGS
Another way to jazz up an otherwise pedestrian recording is to use colored pressing materials. Pure shellac (the main ingredient in most 78s) is a translucent amber compound
which must be mixed with fillers and/or pigments in order to provide color. (This is true even for standard black shellac discs.) A few companies pressed standard issue fare in
shades ranging from dark brown to orange (Canadian Berliner, Pathé/Perfect, Grey Gull, Durium, etc.) or blue, as in the case of American Record Company pressings, Edison
Blue Amberol cylinders and mid-1930s Viva-tonal Columbias. Other labels used color to mark special occasions or to complement certain types of recordings, such as green for
Irish releases or purple for some of Edison's operatic cylinders. Particularly appealing are records exhibiting a swirled or spattered mix of two or more colors.
Again, you will find other examples scattered throughout the catalog; for example, see Lots 1058-65, 1882, 9002 and 9775-76.
PICTURE RECORDS
A third way to create visual interest is to press the grooves into a transparent material overlaying a picture covering the entire record. Because of their aesthetic appeal (and
relative scarcity compared to standard black records), picture discs have always been collectable. Also see Lots 4713-17.
ADVERTISING RECORDS
As Mike Sherman and I worked on the Collector's Guide to Victor Records, we spent a great deal of time sorting through piles of non-commercial pressings to fill out all the
special sections in the back of the book. This was a laborious process, as these records have been piling up around here for years. But the CGVR project helped break open the
log jam, and now I am happy to offer some of these interesting records (both Victor and otherwise) in this catalog.
Categorizing special pressings is a subjective and frustrating task, but I've had a go at it and herewith present the following three sections for your consideration. We'll start with
advertising discs, which I define as recordings that were meant to be circulated among the general population in order to sell or promote a commercial product or service.
