COMMEMORATIVE & SOUVENIR RECORDINGS
This category is similar to (and overlaps to a certain extent) the previous two sections. In a sense, commemorative and souvenir pressings could even be considered a subset of
the advertising and in-house categories.
There hasn't been a great deal of research done on non-commercial recordings, so the field is wide open to those who might have an interest in establishing a study collection
or creating some sort of discography. To that end, I have included a lot number at the end of each listing to enable bids to be placed on the sections as a group.
1008. Souvenair mx 1-4 [2 recs] Breakfast in Hollywood Highlights from Tom Breneman's ABC Radio Show, Pts 1-4 MB 15 GR, FW SCFS E--
Pictured on page 220 of the Collector's Guide to Victor Records, the following lot was one of the highlights of the book. To begin with, it is one of the first "special
pressings" ever offered to the general public (in fact, I really can't think of any such disc recording that would predate it). Secondly, it has real historical significance, being a
promotional item from the storied 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. (This exposition was Eldridge Johnson's first opportunity to show off his product line to a
wide cross-section of the American public on a truly grand scale.) And of course, what could be more sexy than a 3" pre-dog label Victor recording (and in such nice condition)?
The label states, "Ask your nearest Music Dealer to let you hear what this Record has to say on the Victor Talking Machine." (A very clever way of inducing prospective talking
machine buyers to visit their local Victor dealer.) But flip the record over and be further amazed. On the back is a label covering the entire reverse side with a picture of the March
King and his statement, "Dear Mr. Johnson: Your 'VICTOR' and 'MONARCH' Records are all right. John Philip Sousa." Interestingly, this testimonial stands in stark contrast to
Sousa's later remarks likening recorded music to canned salmon.
The recorded message of the disc is as follows: "Put me off at Buffalo! I want to see the exhibit of Victor and Monarch talking machines and records manufactured exclusively by
Eldridge R. Johnson, Camden, New Jersey." (See Lots 188 & 9468 for a couple of great companion pieces!)
I'm aware of but three examples of this record; without a doubt, this will be the crown jewel in the collection of whoever is fortunate enough to win it! Truly an investment item.
