2064 - Securely fenced off from the rest of the
world, life in Euroasia, except for a handful
of suicide bombings and border disputes, is
constantly improving. On the other side of
the fence, countries are being exploited and
wracked by regression, dictatorship, and
religious fanaticism. People live in poverty and
misery.
Max Schwartzwald is the owner of Chez Max,
a smart Parisian restaurant, but he is also
an Ashcroft agent, a member of a secret
government organisation whose mission is to
promptly identify and weed out anything that
may threaten the political status quo.
CHEZ
MAX
JAKOB ARJOUNI
TRANSLATED BY ANTHEA BELL
Provoked by the events of 9/11 and the US reaction, Jakob Arjouni
has written a clever and satiric novel focusing on a state intelligence
officer and the workings of mass hysteria
Jakob Arjouni is the author of the celebrated
Kayankaya novels featuring a Turkish detective
in Frankfurt. Titles include Happy Birthday
Turk, More Beer, One Man One Murder and
Kismet. Magic Hoffmann, a standalone novel was
shortlisted for the IMPAC Award. His latest novel,
Holy Eddy, has just been published in Germany.
He divides his time between Germany and France.
www.noexit.co.uk/titles/chezmax/
Schwartzwald’s biggest problem is his Ashcroft
partner, Chen Wu, a self-righteous loudmouth,
who leaves no taboo unbroken, attacks every
human weakness and takes liberties at will - all
because of the spectacular successes he has
achieved within the organisation.
But is Chen a double agent who is bringing
illegal immigrants into the Euroasian world and
is this the opportunity for Max to get rid of his
partner once and for all?
CONMAN
RICHARD ASPLIN
Conman is the story of young Neil Martin, a
kindly family man. A bit geeky, a bit nerdy.
If you met him, you would assume he runs a
failing comic memorabilia store in London’s
Soho. Which he does. In order to bail himself
out of a huge stock-ruining, poster sopping
basement flood, he needs to claim on his
insurance. Which he would do – if he’d
remembered to pay his premium.
Richard Asplin is the author of two previous
novels, T-Shirt & Genes and Gagged – A
Thriller With Jokes. He is a lover of midperiod
Woody Allen movies, Richard Dawkins,
David Mamet, Elvis Presley, Big Bad Voodoo
Daddy, Texas Hold’em, vintage guitars and
his cat. Richard currently lives in London.
Somewhere in the shadows,
where High Fidelity meets
The Usual Suspects, where David
Mamet meets Ben Elton, Conman
will keep you laughing, guessing
and up all night until the last page
is turned and the breathtaking
truth is revealed.
‘The first blue-chip young
novelist of the 21st Century.
Catch him if you can’
– Tony Parsons
Terrified of losing everything Neil reluctantly
agrees to help Christopher – a passing confidence
trickster – use his premises for a big sting. So the
con is on and the trap is set.
But things are never as they seem in the
twilight world of the confidence man. And
when Christopher’s real target is revealed, Neil
finds himself plotting, switching, swapping and
scamming for revenge, for redemption. And for
his life.
RESURRECTIONIST
Your only child is lost between
this world and the next, and
more than anything you want
him back. A controversial
doctor and a mysterious
stranger claim they have the
answer. Who do you trust? Are
you willing to risk everything?
Are you prepared to enter Limbo?
Part classic noir thriller, part
mind-bending fantasy, The
Resurrectionist is a wild
ride into a territory where
nothing is as it appears. It
is the story of Sweeney, a
druggist by trade, and his
son, Danny, the victim of an
accident that has left him in
a persistent coma. Hoping for
a miracle, they have come to
the forbidding, fortress-like
Peck Clinic, whose doctors
‘A brilliantly tuned, mesmerizing labyrinth of a
quasi-real world as only a master artist could
draw it.’ – James Ellroy
‘Jack O’Connell has riffed on language, firecleansed
genre conventions, and stripped the
artifice from the modern noir novel, creating a
body of work both exciting and entirely original.’
– George Pelecanos
‘A masterpiece, O’Connell’s tour de force has
a dose of the uncertainty of Kafka, the fantasy
of Bradbury, the crisp prose of Greene, and the
noir of Chandler.’
– Andrew Gulli, Editor, Strand Magazine
‘Brilliant writing, original concepts, emotional
resonance’
claim to have ‘resurrected’
other patients who were lost
in the void. What Sweeney
comes to realize, however,
is that the real cure for his
son’s condition may lie in
Limbo, a fantasy comic book
world into which his son had
been drawn at the time of his
accident. Plunged into the
intrigue that envelops the
clinic, Sweeney’s search for
answers leads to sinister back
alleys, brutal dead ends, and
terrifying corners of darkness
and mystery.
Could it be the end for Sharman?
For seven years, ex-cop Nick Sharman has lived
in ‘exile’ on a Caribbean island with no UK
extradition treaty - his life of luxury funded by
the proceeds of a bank robbery where he was
the last man standing. Then a phone call out of
the blue from London changes everything. The
voice from the past belongs to the only woman
that he loves, his daughter Judith. Like father,
like daughter, she’s a police officer, but the
family resemblance doesn’t stop there - Judith
is in big trouble with the law, and has no one to
turn to except her father.
Much of the slang popularly associated with the
hippie generation of the sixties actually dates
back before WW2, hijacked in the main from
jazz and blues street expressions, mostly relating
10,000 WAYS TO DIE
A DIRECTOR’S TAKE ON THE SPAGHETTI WESTERN
‘40 years ago as a graduate student I wrote a
book about Spaghetti Westerns, called 10,000
Ways to Die. It’s an embarrassing tome when I
look at it now: full of half-assed semiotics and
other attenuated academic nonsense. In the
intervening period I have had the interesting
experience of being a film director. So now,
when I watch these films, I’m looking at them
from a different perspective. A professional
perspective, maybe...
The stylistic and bloody excesses of the films of
Dario Argento are instantly recognisable. Vivid,
baroque and nightmarish, his films lock violent
deaths in a twisted embrace with an almost sexual
beauty. Narrative and logic are often lost in a
bombardment of atmosphere, technical mastery
and provocative imagery. It’s a body of work which
deals explicitly with death and violence, all the
while revelling in perversely alluring stylistics and
shot through with an unflinching intensity.
Setting the tone with earlier gialli films such as The
Animal Trilogy and Deep Red, Argento has steadily
pushed the boundaries; through his elaborately
gothic fairytales Suspiria and Inferno, right up
to his more recent contributions to TV’s Masters
of Horror compendium and the conclusion of his
Three Mothers trilogy, Mother of Tears: The Third
James Gracey has written for Film Ireland, Alternative
Ulster, Paracinema and Culture Northern Ireland. He has
also contributed to Drowned in Sound, Twisted Ear and
Eat My Brains.
Recent conclusion to his revered
Three Mothers Trilogy and a
proposed remake of Suspiria has
sparked an interest in his work again
with many critics revaluating his films
and his influence on horror cinema
His work is often cited in studies of
film, especially Italian cinema,
on-screen violence, Horror, feminism
and auteurism
His work has influenced the likes of
Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter
and Martin Scorsese
Mother. Along the way, his prowling camera
work, pounding scores and stylistic bloodshed
have only gained in intensity and opulence.
Hailed as one of horror cinemas most significant
pioneers, Argento continues to create inimitable
and feverishly violent films with a level of
artistry rarely seen in horror films. His high
profile and mastery of the genre is confirmed
with his role as producer on celebrated classics
such as George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead
and Lamberto Bava’s Demons, and his work has
Tension. Fear. Exhilaration. Atmospheric
synthesizers. You’re in John Carpenter territory.
One of the most iconic directors of American
cinema John Carpenter has astonished audiences
the world over with his tightly crafted horror,
thriller and science-fiction films. Not just a
director, Carpenter’s talents also extend to writing
the screenplays and soundtracks to many of his
films.
From the existential comedy classic Dark Star
through to the terrifying smash hit Halloween, the
taut siege of Assault on Precinct 13 to the visceral
Vampires there’s action and tension all around.
But it’s not all ghosts from The Fog or horrific
mutations in The Thing, there’s time for romance
One of the icons of cult cinema, breaking
low-budget films such as Halloween into
the mainstream
Invaluable for all interested in genre
study, horror, science-fiction and thrillers
Carpenter’s hands-on approach to filmmaking
makes him an inspiration to low
budget and no budget film-makers
Interest in his work has increased in
recent years due to a number of highprofile
remakes of his films
Timeless Adventures is a critical history of Doctor
Who, covering the series’ 45 years, from the
creation of the show to its triumph as Britain’s
number one TV drama.
Opening with an in-depth account of the
creation of the series within the BBC of the
early 1960s, each decade of the show is tackled
through a unique political and pop cultural
historical viewpoint, exploring the links between
contemporary Britain and the stories Doctor Who
told, and how such links kept the show popular
with a mass television audience.
Chapters range from discussions on the cultural
and political relevance of Doctor Who monsters
like the Daleks (based on lingering wartime
What is Blaxploitation? In the early 1970s a type of
film emerged that featured all-black casts, really
cool soul, R’n’B and disco music soundtracks,
characters sporting big guns, big dashikis, and
even bigger ’fros, and had some of the meanest,
baddest attitudes to shoot their way across our
screens.
More than that, for African-American audiences
these films were an antidote to the sanitised ‘safe’
images of blackness that Sidney Poitier and Bill
Cosby presented to America. These films depicted
a reality about the world which African-American
audiences could identify with, even if the stories
themselves were pure fantasy.
BRUCE LEE
NEW EDITION SIMON B. KENNY
Bruce Lee was the most
influential martial artist of the
20 th century. Way beyond his
time in terms of his physical
training, he went against the
grain of traditional martial arts
to develop his own unique
However his art was much more
than a physical fighting art, it
was a philosophical way of life.
This updated edition examines
the films of Bruce Lee and
The Templars have exerted a unique
as occultists of the first order, the
FREEMASONRY
NEW IN PAPERBACK GILES MORGAN
Freemasonry today is a worldwide
phenomenon that accepts
membership from a diverse ethnic
and religious range of backgrounds.
Entry to Freemasonry requires a
belief in a Supreme Being although it
insists it does not constitute a religion
in itself. The rituals and practices
of Freemasonry have been viewed
as variously obscure, pointless,
baffling, sinister and frightening. An
intensely stratified and hierarchical
structure underpins most Masonic
orders whose activities are focused
within meeting points usually termed
as Lodges. Giles Morgan examines its
historical significance and its position
and role in contemporary society.
Giles Morgan is the author
of the Pocket Essentials on
WINSTON CHURCHILL
During his long and extraordinary life, Winston
Churchill was a central figure in almost all of
the tumultuous events of the first half of the
twentieth century. He was a soldier, writer and
politician and, after the Second World War, he
became one of the world’s greatest statesmen.
But his reputation rests on his role as a war
leader and, in particular, on the period between
May 1940 and July 1941, when Britain stood
alone against Nazi Germany.
Since his death in 1965, a few dissenting voices
have cast his role as, amongst other things, an
opportunist and war-monger. But, as flawed as
he undoubtedly was, most modern historians
Bill Price grew up on a farm in Herefordshire, not
far from Hay-on-Wye. He worked in the book trade
in Hay and London for almost twenty years and is
now a freelance writer, with a particular interest in
archaeology and ancient history. He is the author
of Pocket Essentials on Tutankhamun, Celtic Myths
and Darwin.
2009 is the 70th anniversary of the
outbreak of World War II
Churchill is still regarded as one of
the greatest British leaders of the
Twentieth Century
National leadership is currently a
hotly debated topic
Focuses on Churchill’s wartime
decisions and achievements
WAR LEADER
BILL PRICE
and politicians still hold him in the highest
regard.
This book looks at some of the key moments in
Churchill’s life, including his role in the British
Army’s last cavalry charge in the Battle of
Omdurman and his escape from a prisoner of
war camp during the Boer War, then focuses on
those times when Churchill’s courage and force
of character almost single-handedly dragged
Britain back from the brink of defeat, making
him, in the eyes of many people, one of the
greatest of all Great Britons...
UTOPIA
MERLIN COVERLEY
For more than 2,000 years utopian visionaries
have sought to create a blueprint of the
ideal society: from Plato to HG Wells, from
Cloudcuckooland to Shangri-La, the utopian
impulse has generated a vast body of work,
encompassing philosophy and political theory,
classical literature and science fiction. And
yet these utopian dreams have often turned
to nightmare, as utopia gives way to its dark
reflection, dystopia.
Utopia takes the reader on a journey through
these imaginary worlds, charting the progress
of utopian ideas from their origins within
the classical world, to the rebirth of utopian
Dr Merlin Coverley is a writer and bookseller.
He is the author of the Pocket Essentials,
London Writing, Occult London and the
surprise bestseller, Psychogeography.
Accessible and informative overview
of the entire history of Utopia, from
Plato’s Republic to the present day
Utopian writing attracts a broad
audience across a wide range of
subjects, from philosophy and
political thought, to classical
literature and science fiction
Taps into the current resurgence
of interest in utopian thought,
political debates concerning the
ideals in the Middle Ages. Later we see the
emergence of socialist and feminist ideas; while
the twentieth century was to be dominated by
expressions of totalitarian oppression. From the
novel to the political manifesto, from satire to
science fiction, utopias have always reflected
the age that gave rise to them, and this guide
will explore this historical context, offering both
an analysis of the key texts and an account of
their political and cultural background.
THE GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO
SCAMS,
SWINDLES
AND
CHEATS
DAVID BRITLAND
They say you can’t cheat an honest man but
honest men are cheated every day. In fact there
has never been a better time to be cheated.
Faced with information overload and lives set on
fast-forward we have transformed ourselves into
a nation of suckers. The world is a swindler’s
paradise providing a thousand ways to part the
honest man from his cash. Wouldn’t it be good
to know what they are? After all, forearmed is
forewarned.
That’s where The Gentleman’s Guide comes in.
Think of it as the good guy’s guide to the galaxy
in which the sneaky scams of the con artists are
laid bare. Entertainingly written, it reveals the
secrets behind all the scams you are ever likely
to encounter as you wend your way through life:
David Britland is a freelance writer and consultant
specialising in all areas of deception including, magic, the
paranormal, con tricks and illusion. He has been awarded
a Literary Fellowship by the Academy of Magical Arts in Los
Angeles for his work on magic and magicians.
He is the co-creator of The Real Hustle and works closely
with Objective Productions, developing different television
formats. Series to date include Secrets of the Psychics, Dirty
Tricks, Harry Price Ghost Hunter, Death Wish Live, People
Watchers and Derren Brown.
www.highstakespublishing.com/cheats/
street hustles, pickpockets, ATM dodges, get rich
quick schemes, proposition bets, gambling scams,
consumer rip offs, cyber cons and more.
But reading is not enough. Hands on experience is
what you need if you are to fully understand the
wiles of the con man. And The Gentleman’s Guide
contains dozens of proposition bets and games
you can’t lose that show just how easy we are
to manipulate when the circumstances around a
scam are so carefully crafted as to make even the
most outlandish proposition a safe bet. Warn your
friends and practice on your enemies.
And always remember that if you can’t spot the
sucker at the table, then it’s probably you.
