Expert view<strong>in</strong>g test<br />

An assessment session based on the op<strong>in</strong>ions of expert assessors,<br />

<strong>in</strong> which judgements are provided on visual quality<br />

and/or impairment visibility.<br />

File<br />

A structured collection of data characterized by a metadata<br />

header and a s<strong>in</strong>gle body of data payload.<br />

Frame rate<br />

<strong>The</strong> number of pictures presented or recorded each second. It<br />

is measured <strong>in</strong> frames per second.<br />

Gamut mapp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

A process by which one color, which a device cannot produce,<br />

is replaced by another color, which the device can produce.<br />

Gray scale<br />

<strong>The</strong> series of achromatic colors from the lowest lum<strong>in</strong>ance <strong>to</strong><br />

the highest lum<strong>in</strong>ance.<br />

HVDLT<br />

Human Vision Delta Lum<strong>in</strong>ance Threshold. This is the m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />

change <strong>in</strong> lum<strong>in</strong>ance that a group of people can correctly<br />

identify 50% of the time. See also HVMT from which this<br />

is derived.<br />

HVMT<br />

Human Visual Modulation Threshold. This is the m<strong>in</strong>imum<br />

modulation that a group of people can correctly identify 50%<br />

of the time.<br />

Image State Diagram<br />

A diagram show<strong>in</strong>g the various states <strong>in</strong> which an encoded<br />

image can exist. <strong>The</strong>re are three states, the Scene Referred<br />

State, the Output Referred State, and the Input Referred State.<br />

An image can be transformed between any two states.<br />

Integration<br />

Mak<strong>in</strong>g one system, application or set of data work very<br />

closely with others. Ideally, the dist<strong>in</strong>ctions and boundaries<br />

and barriers between the separate parts should disappear as<br />

the <strong>in</strong>tegrated system or <strong>in</strong>formation works seamlessly - as<br />

one. This is a very 'deep' form of <strong>in</strong>terfac<strong>in</strong>g and goes a great<br />

deal further than simply <strong>in</strong>terchang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation with a<br />

third party. <strong>The</strong> use of <strong>in</strong>dustry-wide standards is essential if<br />

extensive <strong>in</strong>tegration is <strong>to</strong> be achieved.<br />

Interface<br />

A means of pass<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>in</strong>formation from one application <strong>to</strong><br />

another. Interfaces can either be proprietary, <strong>in</strong> which case<br />

only one or a chosen few applications can use it, or open<br />

with the <strong>in</strong>terface details publicly available and, best of all,<br />

comply<strong>in</strong>g with the appropriate <strong>in</strong>ternational standards.<br />

Interoperability<br />

<strong>The</strong> ability of systems <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>teroperate – <strong>to</strong> understand and<br />

work with <strong>in</strong>formation passed from one <strong>to</strong> another. Applied <strong>to</strong><br />

television this means video, audio and metadata from one<br />

system can be used directly by another. <strong>Digital</strong> signals may<br />

be orig<strong>in</strong>ated <strong>in</strong> various formats and subjected <strong>to</strong> different<br />

types of compression so care is needed <strong>to</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>teroperability.<br />

Intra-frame contrast<br />

<strong>The</strong> ratio of the lum<strong>in</strong>ance of the white divided by the lum<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

of the black, normalized <strong>to</strong> a denom<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r of 1,when<br />

the white and black that are measured are projected on<strong>to</strong> the<br />

screen <strong>in</strong> the same image. This is usually expressed as number:1,<br />

for example 2000:1. See also checkerboard contrast.<br />

ISDCF Voluntary Nam<strong>in</strong>g Convention<br />

<strong>The</strong> most significant <strong>in</strong>formation about the DCP is conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>in</strong> the first 40 characters of the CPL text fields due <strong>to</strong> limited<br />

display space of certa<strong>in</strong> DC servers. Additional <strong>in</strong>formation is<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded for servers that can display more than 40 characters.<br />

JPEG 2000<br />

A wavelet-based image compression standard. It was created<br />

by the Jo<strong>in</strong>t Pho<strong>to</strong>graphic Expert Group (JPEG) committee<br />

with the <strong>in</strong>tention of supersed<strong>in</strong>g their orig<strong>in</strong>al discrete cos<strong>in</strong>e<br />

transform-based JPEG standard. It is the compression method<br />

specified by DCI for digital c<strong>in</strong>ema picturetracks.<br />

KDM – Key Delivery Message<br />

<strong>The</strong> KDM provides the method for securely deliver<strong>in</strong>g content<br />

and key elements. A KDM conta<strong>in</strong>s the ‘keys’ <strong>to</strong> unlock the<br />

elements of a CPL for a specific device. If a DCP conta<strong>in</strong>s<br />

multiple CPLs, a unique KDM is required for each different<br />

CPL, and can only be generated for devices on the Trusted<br />

Device List (TDL).<br />

Kell Fac<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>The</strong> vertical def<strong>in</strong>ition of a scanned image is only around<br />

70% (the Kell Fac<strong>to</strong>r) of the l<strong>in</strong>e count due <strong>to</strong> a scan’s <strong>in</strong>ability<br />

<strong>to</strong> show detail occurr<strong>in</strong>g between the l<strong>in</strong>es. Note that, for<br />

<strong>in</strong>terlaced scans, vertical def<strong>in</strong>ition is further reduced by the<br />

Interlace Fac<strong>to</strong>r <strong>to</strong> 50% or less overall dur<strong>in</strong>g most vertical<br />

image movement.<br />

Legacy<br />

Someth<strong>in</strong>g that is <strong>in</strong>fluenced by or a part of the past. As<br />

much as new applications and technologies spr<strong>in</strong>g up, most<br />

times even these bright new ideas are steeped <strong>in</strong> legacy - they<br />

are not a clean break from the past.<br />

Library Management Server® (LMS)<br />

A group of servers and network<strong>in</strong>g components that are <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />

and tested <strong>to</strong> create a powerful central hub for all<br />

communication needs <strong>in</strong> the multiplex. It allows central s<strong>to</strong>rage<br />

of all movies, alternative content, trailers, advertis<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

more. This component networks the theatre, <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

value of the <strong>in</strong>dividual components on each screen.<br />

Local S<strong>to</strong>rage<br />

A s<strong>to</strong>rage device that is associated with the <strong>in</strong>dividual playout<br />

device.<br />

LSDI<br />

Large Screen <strong>Digital</strong> Imagery. Is a family of digital imagery<br />

systems applicable <strong>to</strong> programs such as dramas, plays, sport<strong>in</strong>g<br />

events, concerts, cultural events, etc, from capture <strong>to</strong> large<br />

screen presentation <strong>in</strong> high resolution quality <strong>in</strong> appropriately<br />

equipped theaters, halls and other venues.<br />

Lum<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

A measure of the energy be<strong>in</strong>g reflected or emitted by a surface<br />

and <strong>in</strong> which the energy is weighted by the CIE Vʎ, also<br />

called the CIE y-bar color match<strong>in</strong>g function. Lum<strong>in</strong>ance is an<br />

approximate correlate of brightness. <strong>The</strong> Y value <strong>in</strong> the set of<br />

CIE XYZ tristimulus values is the lum<strong>in</strong>ance.<br />

Lum<strong>in</strong>ance fac<strong>to</strong>r<br />

<strong>The</strong> ratio of the lum<strong>in</strong>ance of a sample divided by the lum<strong>in</strong>ance<br />

of a perfectly reflect<strong>in</strong>g or transmitt<strong>in</strong>g object when<br />

both are illum<strong>in</strong>ated identically.<br />

Master<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Master<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dicates the set of those technical activities that<br />

lead <strong>to</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ished edited master of a program, which normally<br />

materializes the creative <strong>in</strong>tent of its authors.<br />

Media Server<br />

Each digital c<strong>in</strong>ema projec<strong>to</strong>r requires a media player <strong>to</strong><br />

decompress and decrypt <strong>Digital</strong> C<strong>in</strong>ema Packages (DCP),<br />

allow<strong>in</strong>g the content <strong>to</strong> be played on the associated projec<strong>to</strong>r.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is one media server for every projec<strong>to</strong>r <strong>in</strong> a multiplex.<br />

Metadata<br />

Data about data. For programme material this might <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

the title, duration, time and date, copyright details, location<br />

or type of programme. Metadata has become a vital part of<br />

s<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g digital content, image and audio, <strong>in</strong> large archives <strong>to</strong><br />

enable it <strong>to</strong> be found aga<strong>in</strong> easily. Information that is considered<br />

ancillary <strong>to</strong> or otherwise directly complementary <strong>to</strong><br />

Essence. Any <strong>in</strong>formation that a content provider considers<br />
