ATTACHMENT D: CARE OF PEDIATRIC CENTRAL CATHETERS Type of Line CVC Catheter Broviac Catheter Groshong Catheter Venous Access Ports Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) Appearance of Catheter Double Lumen CVC is white and has 2 lumens and 2 ports labeled distal and proximal on the catheter. Site is in the subclavian, femoral, or jugular vein. Broviac: Catheters are white and are either single or double lumen. The double lumen lines have 2 ports: red and white Exit Site: is usually upper or mid-chest area. Toddlers may have exit site in the back. A dacron cuff and vita cuff is on the catheter but are not visible after placement. The dacron cuff is on the catheter just under the skin near the exit site. Its acts as an anchor holding the line in place and as an infection barrier. The vita cuff (made of silver iodide) is proximal to the dacron cuff. It dissolves in about 3 weeks, and helps prevent infection in the newly placed line. Groshong: Catheter is clear with a blue stripe. It can be either single or double lumen. Double lumen lines have 2 ports: red and blue. Exit Site: is usually upper or mid-chest area. A dacron cuff and vita cuff is on the catheter but are not visible after placement. The dacron cuff is on the catheter just under the skin near the exit site. Its acts as an anchor holding the line in place and as an infection barrier. The vita cuff (made of silver iodide) is proximal to the dacron cuff. It dissolves in about 3 weeks, and helps prevent infection in the newly placed line. Venous access ports are totally implanted in a subcutaneous pocket of the chest. Therefore, there no external line is seen. The port shape may be square or circular. It has a titanium base with a silicone dome for venous access. The dome may be either raised or flat. Venous access ports may be connected to a Broviac or Groshong catheter. A PICC line is inserted via the basilic or cephalic vein. It is threaded so that the tip lies in the superior vena cava (SVC). There are a variety of PICC catheters. Most are white in appearance, made of soft flexible material (silicone, polyurethane).
