How can I not write about the single
biggest rescue operation CDHS has
encountered in our 50 year history? Of course
I am talking about the situation in Scranton
this past October. Much has already been
written and discussed about this situation in
the local media, so I will keep my overview
brief. Basically it started as a request for
help. Representatives from several rescue
organizations decided the best way to assess
the situation was to see firsthand the animals
and their present condition.
History tells us to be prepared for just
about anything, but we were not prepared
for the number of dogs we encountered. We
were calculating what our facilities could
care for, transport, etc. All our planning and
thoughtful consideration went quickly down
the tubes! The animals were in very poor
living conditions, and most were in need of
medical care. The owner went from building
to building, pen to pen and said which dogs
we could take and we took all we were
allowed to.
We started kenneling the released dogs
in the pet taxis we had brought with us. She
kept releasing more and more, and we kept
finding kennel space, lap space, any space
available to get as many dogs removed as
we possibly could. That is why at the end of
the day we were driving home with 129 dogs
in four SUVs. Ninety-six stayed at CDHS
and the rest went to Prairie Paws Rescue
in Jamestown. That amount of dogs was
something we managed to absorb only by the
grace of the mild fall weather as we were able
to use enclosed but unheated kennel spaces
The biggest rescue

Continued from page 1
in our original building. This solution worked
fairly well for temporary housing. It was like
“roughing-it” camping, and I definitely had a
flashback to my Alabama trip after hurricane
Katrina. Dogs were housed four to six per
kennel; we washed dog bowls outside in
Rubbermaid tubs; we cleaned for hours a day
and when the last pen was clean, we could
and should have started all over. It was a crazy
time!
Dealing with the health of all our new
arrivals was daunting, but immediate. This
resulted in the shelter being closed to
the public to keep potential disease from
spreading. All the while we were dealing with
all these issues; we were haunted by the faces
of the dogs we had to leave behind. The owner
signed a release with the Sheriff’s Department,
so we had the authority to remove the
remaining estimated “40 or so” dogs, but all
our facilities were taxed to the max!
We spent the week trying to engage the
assistance of anyone we could think of. Offers
started coming in from rescue groups which
was encouraging. We contacted the Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS) in hopes
that they could go to the farm and remove
the remaining dogs. Their emergency teams
were already deployed elsewhere in the U.S.,
but they contacted the ASPCA, which in turn
offered to transport some dogs to a shelter in
Colorado. The HSUS also did make contact
with some reputable rescues which were able
to assist.
With all of these promises of assistance,
we headed back to the property the next week
to retrieve the remaining dogs. The property
owner was evicting the owner of the dogs
and they were in immediate need. We just
needed to do it and worry about the “hows”
and “wheres” later. Might be crazy, but it got
the job done!
Seventy dogs were removed that day,
with 50 coming to CDHS, 14 going to
Prairie Paws in Jamestown and six going to
foster homes who work with Pet Project in
Dickinson. More vet assessments, more shortterm
overcrowding, more mayhem and more
satisfaction than I can describe.
Rescue groups arrived, transport
was arranged for other dogs to be sent
to organizations in other states. This was an
incredible undertaking that is actually still
affecting us greatly today. We have had 56
puppies born from some very pregnant moms
who arrived with bulging bellies. The public
interest and support had been nothing short of
phenomenal. Adoptions are at an all-time high,
visitors to the shelter are at an all-time high,
and the publicity and community feedback
has been overwhelmingly positive.
If you brought shelter supplies out in
the mornings and the shelter staff was
locked down caring for animals, we thank
you and appreciate your support! If you
sent a check, we thank you! All your notes
of encouragement are being placed in an
album that you can read whenever you need
a pick-me-up! The staff has been stretched
with extra work and worry, but we made it
through for the animals. One comment I took
particular interest in was from the Puppy Mill
Task Force division of the HSUS, located in
Washington D.C. This woman told me she has
been involved in ‘large-scale’ confiscations
of up to 70 dogs in major metropolitan areas
with lots of resources and she knows how
much combined effort these things take. She
went on to say she “had no idea how we were
able to pull this off in Mandan, North Dakota!”
She has never met the people who love this
organization and do whatever it takes to help
animals in need. The fact we were able to do it
did not surprise me at all.
Board of Director elections
Website Helper Needed
CDHS is in great need of someone
willing to spend time updating our
website on a regular basis. A working
knowledge of website editing would be
helpful, but is not necessary as we are
willing to train anyone who will be able
to devote a few hours per week to the
task. It’s so important that our events are
posted and our furry animal friends are
updated on the website so the public can
see who is available for adoption. Please
help if you can!
Spay Day USA 2011
CDHS will recognize Spay Day USA in
February 2011 by offering $15 spay/neuter
assistance certificates to help people
spay or neuter their pets. People can call
the shelter at 667-2020 to request their
certificates. Certificates can be redeemed
at all local and several central North
Dakota veterinary clinics.
Spay Day USA is sponsored by
the Humane Society of the United
States (HSUS) with the primary goal
of increasing the number of pets being
spayed and neutered and decreasing
the number of unwanted puppies and
kittens born each year. Thank you to our
generous donors who make the Spay/
Neuter Assistance Program possible.
“Doing great things for pets and people.”
THANK YOU one and all!
By Sue Buchholz, Shelter Director
The main thing on my mind is all the exhausting and downright
dirty work put in by staff and volunteers when we took on the responsibility
of all the puppy mill dogs of late. It’s not a task for the faint of
heart, and all the dedicated staff and volunteers proved once again
we are in it for the animals! On the days we were retrieving the dogs,
we left a bigger burden on the staff who stayed behind. Little did any
of us imagine how much extra work we would be bringing back home
with us!
We arrived back at the shelter late at night with hours of work
ahead of us. After our long day and three-hour drive the transport
kennels were filthy with vomit and feces. The dogs were scared and sick. Volunteers met us at the
shelter and we began to examine all the dogs’ overall condition, clean them somewhat and exercise
them a bit. We gave them a little water and some fresh air. We bunked dogs together by sexes and
size. Exhausted, but on clean bedding for the first time possibly ever, most of them were settled in
by the time we left at 3 a.m.
We were back by 8 a.m. the next morning. All of the dogs had severe diarrhea from parasites and
lack of food. We had to provide food and water sparingly – a heartbreaking site was to see them
fighting over water, let alone food. It was several days before they stopped sparring over food and
water. The diarrhea did not resolve quickly either. Day after day we were met with very messy kennels
and dogs.
Thankfully veterinarians came to our facility several times to assist with everyone’s overall
health. Vaccinating and starting the worming process on 150 dogs was overwhelming too. The
paperwork alone took hours and hours - documenting each dog with a photo and logging its medical
condition. The kennel cleaning process took all day long. Plus we still had to care for all the other
cats and dogs who were living at our facility prior to this monstrous event. It makes me tired still
to think about it, but maybe that’s because it’s now the end of January and for the first time since
October 9 I think our routine is getting back to normal and is almost under control.
We still have more than 90 dogs in our shelter. However we have been busy with lots of adoptions
and are beginning to see the light. Some staff gave up days off for weeks, part-timers put in
extra hours, and volunteers worked tirelessly in big and small ways to help under some really challenging
conditions. I would like to thank our awesome CDHS staff – Missy Benson, Nancy Fehr, Caroline
Hamel, Kristie Heck, Chris Hendrickson, Sonya Johnson, Shelly Kohler, Jessica Lindquist, Nicole
Martineson, Jessie Monson, Carrie Roth, Carrie Schmidt, Cheyenne Sletten and Austin Verhasselt.
The people who volunteered hours and days of their lives to help are invaluable! Please give a
word of thanks to these dedicated people – Katja and James Weiand, Becky Johnson, Carol Davis,
Colleen Pfau, Annette Bjornstad, Jolene Podoll, Dr. Barb Espe and Dr. DelRae Martin from Heart
River Animal Hospital, Anne Green, Margaret Green, Larry Nytz, Renae Glatt, Nina Kadrmas, Dr.
Jacob Carlson from Missouri Valley/Pinehurst Animal Hospital, Marj Smith, Prairie Paws Rescue in
Jamestown, Bob Guler, Pat Bosch and Kathy Hagel.
I fear I have missed someone and for that
I sincerely apologize. It’s a privilege to work
alongside such caring, generous people who
are not afraid to get their hands dirty and their
heartstrings tugged! I know families sacrificed
time with loved ones, but as always, the rewards
are in the smiling faces of the dogs we
saved. Sadly I am afraid we will face similar
challenges again, but I know there are people
and a great community behind us, holding us
up and helping us meet that challenge. Come
what may, we will do our best. The animals
depend on us and deserve nothing less.
Focus On All Fours

No real champion
for the animals
By Cameo Skager,
CDHS Board President
I initially started writing this article by
lamenting about the fact that no legislator
stepped up to sponsor a felony animal cruelty
bill during the 2011 North Dakota legislative
session. Then, on the last day to sponsor bills,
a bill was sponsored – Senate Bill 2365.
This bill is NOT the bill that CDHS helped
to formulate this past summer and fall. At that
time we were asked to participate in rewriting
the law about animal cruelty. Cynthia Feland,
then Bismarck’s Assistant State’s Attorney,
crafted the language, making it a class
C felony violation to be cruel to animals
(defined in several different ways).
Sitting at the table during these meetings
were representatives from CDHS, FM
Humane Society in Fargo, Farm Bureau,
Farmer’s Union, North Dakota Stockmen’s
Association, North Dakota Department of
Agriculture (State Veterinarian), the North
Dakota Veterinary Medical Association and
many other farm, ranch and livestock groups.
As of the last rewrite of the bill, all seemed to
be in agreement that we could move forward
with the chosen language. No one commented
that they didn’t approve of the language either
verbally during the meeting, or later, to an
e-mail query.
At the beginning of the session, there was
no sponsor for the bill we had worked on. We
tried desperately to try to find a sponsor for
the bill. The few legislators that displayed any
interest at all came back to us and said they
did not agree with the felony penalty. They
thought it was too strict. Our opinion is “that
is the reason for the bill.”
Now that this new bill has been sponsored,
we are getting the word that there is no
Abygail and pups
support for it from
any of the groups.
I have looked
through both
bills and though
SB2365 does
stipulate a felony
penalty, it also has
lots of extra small
changes. They
don’t look like deal breakers to me, so maybe
they are just excuses for the felony penalty to
not be supported once again. No one is really
telling us why they won’t support the new
bill, but we will likely hear something once
the bill gets a hearing with the Agriculture
Committee.
Even knowing that it likely won’t pass,
we will move ahead with support of SB2365
because we need to continue to speak in
favor of the felony penalty. When you have
seen the great atrocities we have seen and
the awful, painful circumstances that animals
are forced into because humans choose not
to act responsibly, we could do nothing less.
There needs to be a stronger deterrent to this
behavior.
We fully understand the position of the
farm and ranch groups who wouldn’t want a
rancher to get in trouble for cropping ears,
docking tails or other such standard farm
practices. That is not the intent of the bill. The
intent is to punish those who knowingly and
willfully cause pain and suffering to animals
by neglect or abuse.
North Dakota remains a holdout in
providing a needed punishment for people
who abuse animals. We are one of only four
states that does not have a felony animal
cruelty law, along with Idaho, Mississippi
and South Dakota. Studies have shown
that people who abuse animals are
more likely to abuse people, often
their families and likely spouses and
children.
So, in another example of how we
do great things for pets and people, we
must keep pressing our legislators to
step into this century and do the right
thing. We can’t stop talking about this
and we can’t stop asking. It’s the only
way to get someone to finally listen.
CDHS hires
Volunteer
Coordinator
After many years of wishing and
hoping that we could hire someone to
help us work in a more organized way
with volunteers, we’ve finally done it.
Mandy Schaaf has accepted the position
of volunteer coordinator. She will be
working with the shelter staff and
board, organizing volunteers for various
events, projects and ongoing shelter
activities. She will start out by contacting
everyone signed up on our volunteer list,
updating their information. So if Mandy
calls you, you’ll know why.
Mandy has been active with CDHS for
15 years serving on the board of directors,
as a volunteer assisting with office work,
cleaning kennels, walking dogs and has
been involved in organizing the Shaggy
Shuffle for the past 10 years. Working in
various positions has allowed Mandy to
see the organization from many different
perspectives. Mandy and her husband are
the proud adopters of five shelter dogs.
Mandy also currently works at
Missouri Valley Family YMCA as parttime
member specialist. Mandy has had
experience supervising, recruiting and
working with volunteers and employees
at the YMCA and God’s Child Project.
Mandy wants to thank the volunteers
and members for their continued
commitment to CDHS and is excited
about working to engage more people as
active CDHS volunteers. Mandy can be
reached by e-mail at cdhsvolunteers@
midco.net.
Paw-some Volunteers
Karen first came to CDHS to find a cat. Not
only did she find her cat, but she also found a
group of people that she enjoyed working with.
Karen became a volunteer and started attending
membership meetings. In 2008, Karen
became a board member and in 2009 she
became our Treasurer – by far the biggest job
on the board of directors. Her background in accounting
made her a natural fit for the job. She
has spent countless hours organizing our books,
filling out government paperwork, budgeting,
running payroll and dealing with the financial details
so necessary to run a successful business.
In the past, Karen also took over the reins of
the CDHS web page (an astronomical adventure!)
and took on the job of organizing the We
Care receipts from Central Market. Karen has
provided foster homes for kitties and has played
a major role in our last several rummage sales.
When the rest of us are fast asleep, Karen
is most likely burning the midnight oil, working
on spreadsheets and financial statements and updating the web page. We so much appreciate her
knowledge, expertise and willingness to pitch in. She has really done so much to help the board of
directors, the shelter staff and ultimately the animals. And she does it all with a cheerful greeting
and a smile on her face.
As many people know, when you become an avid CDHS volunteer, sometimes your spouse is
lucky enough to be pulled into the mix. Karen’s husband, Mike Holman, has also been an amazing
volunteer for CDHS. He is the “help desk” king and helps the staff with electronic problems such
as e-mail issues, printers on the fritz, security camera backups and computers that need updating.
Mike also does such things as haul snow, offer up his trailer and truck for hauling big items and taking
cans from McQuade’s tournament for recycling.
Karen encourages all animal lovers to get to know CDHS. “When you know enough about the organization,
then you know what you can do to help,” she said. “People always tell me they think it’s
sad to come to the shelter, but it’s really not. Animals come in and are in need of love and attention.
They get that and they change. They get adopted and go home. It’s wonderful to see that.”
Our great appreciation to Karen and Mike for all they do for CDHS. We truly don’t know what we
would do without you.
Thanks to Aetna employees and corporation
We’ve certainly found a wonderful friend in the employees of the Aetna Service Center in
Bismarck and in the Aetna Corporation. There are a few different ways that Aetna employees
can donate to the charity of their choice, and when they do (and enter the donation
information into the Aetna database), the corporation matches their donation. In 2010, we
received a combined amount of more than $21,000. That is a HUGE and wonderful gift to
keep us going month to month and we are so proud and pleased to be a chosen charity for
all these employees and the corporation. Please check with your corporation to see if they
have a matching charity gifts program and if you can designate CDHS as a recipient. It’s a
great feeling to help the critters!
Sassie
Wiggles everyone!
When walking my human lately, I hear other humans asking if
I am a different dog. I am not, so thought I’d send you new photos
so when you see me you will know I am Me. It seems my white
face and white “fur glasses” make humans not know. Why don’t
they just smell me?
I walked my short legged human 4 miles today. I made sure
to read all the Christmas and NY notes on both sides of our
streets! She is becoming well trained on waiting for me to finish
my correspondence. AND I finally got her trained to drive me to
Igoo Park, walk me, and then drive me home with a milkbone to
munch. I can only hope your owners to be are so trainable !!!
Sassie
We Love Eddy
Eddy (aka Solo) has completed our family. Every day he makes
us smile and forget the cares of the day. My husband and I are so
thankful for Eddy and the unconditional love he gives and we share
back with him. He enjoys going for drives and walks and good ol’
couch time too. We also love his playfulness and cuddliness too. He
is the complete package and Eddy knows it too!!!
Sheryl
Lottie & Storm
Hi everyone!
We adopted Lottie a month ago and want to share with you her
progress. At first she would go to Jill readily and was leary of Ray.
She soon learned that Ray has the treats. Now we are pretty good.
She still prefers Jill. She loves to go in the camper and lay on her
blanket. She was given two blankets to use when we got her and she
uses them a lot. We also have a large dog kennel that we put up in
the house. At first we thought she might need a place she could call
her own and a place she could get away from Storm. He is still a pup
and can be a pain when he wants to play. She uses it a lot. We took
the door off so she never has to be afraid to be locked up again. She
can come and go when she wants. She appears to know that. Usually
we let the dogs sleep at the foot of the bed. She prefers her own
blankets and sleeps on the floor beside the bed.
We are happy we have her and our friends and relatives have
given her a warm welcome. We know she is happy, even though she
looks confused sometimes, because her tail is always wagging.
Rio & Mr. Phishers
Rio is right at home
I just wanted to give you an update since I’ve
been living in my new home. I was a little nervous when I first
got home and realized there was another (much larger) cat already
living there. The humans call him Mr. Phishers. My voice was a little
scratchy the first couple days after all the hissing, but it didn’t take
us long to become buds. Phishers now lets me jump on him, chase
him around the house, play with his toys, and even tries to give me
baths sometimes. Oh yeah, and my humans are pretty cool too. They
like to pick me up a lot and give me kisses. Which is ok sometimes,
but someday they’ll realize I have too much exploring to do. Thanks
CDHS for giving me another chance at happiness!
Living the good life
I know you probably have been wondering about my newest adventure
and how my new adoptive parents are doing. As you know, I have a strict
two month probation period for new parents and I am writing to let you
know I have decided to keep them. My bed is comfy, the food is good and
I have established 3 walks a day for them. Most importantly, they are very
trainable and treat my well being as a high priority, (I especially like the way
they rub my ears!). Once they have completed their training, I will continue
my work overseeing the household and I have the responsibility of being a
role model for my little sister, Hope. Don’t get me wrong, I still have plenty of
time for my naps, watching the world go by and just living the good life.
Emerald is a Gem
I just wanted to let you know that Emerald is doing really well.
He fits in perfectly with our family. He is just the sweetest cat.
We all love him. And he gets along really well with everyone in
the family except our golden retriever Burt. But they are slowly
warming to each other.
Emerald likes to sleep on my pillow at night. And sometimes
he’ll just lay there and sometimes he’ll try to snuggle really close
to my face. Or tap me with his paw to let me know I’m his friend.
But he’ll only sleep there when Burt isn’t in bed with us.
Heide
Twiggy is Awesome
Twiggy is doing awesome, recovering well from her surgery. My
Rottweiler, Gunnar is her “babysitter”, he follows her around
the house. She fits in perfectly with my other animals. Last nite
she slept in bed with all of us. She just purrs & cuddles when we
hold her. My other cat has even accepted her. I think that she
has grown overnite! We love her so much! Thank you and your
staff for bringing her into our lives! I promise to keep you posted
and will bring pics.
“Doing great things for pets and people.”
Moms helping moms
By Sue Buchholz
Foster parent services can be provided by
people, or sometimes we enlist the services of
nursing cats and dogs to step up to the plate
and pitch in. We had to take this route with the
influx of puppies arriving at CDHS last October.
Sasha had her seven enroute to the shelter,
and did a fine job of raising them all by herself.
Sasha raised Flint, Fancy, Fabian, Flip, Fabio,
Seven and Savvy.
Cinda, the hound-cross, raised her seven all
by herself too. She added Pico, Ancho, Carnie,
Cayenne, Canela, Comino and Hominy to the
pupulation. Our little 15-pound Paula Deen
decided to have eight puppies, aptly named
Almond, Anginetti, Dunkaroo, Hazelnut, Mango,
Samoas, Rosette and Snickerdoodle. We
thought we would have to supplement her puppies,
but she did a fine job all on her own. Lyric,
the St. Bernard, came with two babies, Encore
Paula Deen and her puppies.
and Bravo. Paula Deen thought that was not quite
fair, and we agree, but are not in charge of such things.
Yetta added Loca, Amega, Bonita and Chica to her lineage, but she developed mastitis and had
to have her youngsters removed for a time. This lead to a dilemma – do we hand feed the babies, or
see if another Mom is willing to take on some fosters? By that time, Paula’s puppies were six weeks
old and eating on their own. Would Paula raise another dog’s puppies? All we had to do is ask! For
only being a six-month-old youngster herself, Paula readily added Yetta’s babies to the chow line.
Yetta received medication and treatment and was soon feeling much better. She still had a lot of
milk so we decided to try her with one of her puppies once again. What a joyous reunion that was!
Yetta had been so worried about her kids and was happy to have at least one back to raise.
In the meantime, another dog we named Shar delivered 16 puppies! Sadly, three only survived a
short time, but the remaining 13 were strong and ready to eat. That’s a tall order for any Mom, so we
looked at our options one more time. Paula’s original cookie kids were doing ok on their own. Paula
was still happily raising three of Yetta’s kids.
Medically Yetta was doing just fine with her one puppy...would she consider helping out Shar?
All we had to do was ask again and she said a big YES right away! I think Yetta would have taken on
the entire 13, but she is a tiny tot herself so we just asked her to add two, which she happily did. So,
if you are keeping track, Paula is raising
Yetta’s kids, Yetta is raising one of her own
and two of Shar’s, Shar is doing her best
with the remaining 11 and they are fast
approaching six-weeks of age. Somehow
it has all worked out and we have raised a
lot of happy, healthy puppies that will soon
be adopted into loving homes. After being
spayed and neutered of course! We all love
puppies, but enough is enough! That’s what
Paula Deen says anyway.
Puppy Tails: A Basset and a Half
by Danielle Hanna, CDHS volunteer
Basset Hounds invaded CDHS last summer.
As soon as one went, another came in. The last
one was Jonesy, the puppy – a tri-colored hot
dog topped with a big squirt of energy. It didn’t
take long for someone to show interest in this
sweetheart. Better yet, this person considered
giving a home to two dogs. The other one?
Boomer. I call him the Sawed-Off Shotgun.
Spitting image of a Yellow Lab – except he can
run under a pickup without ducking. Half his
lineage is, of course, Labrador. The other half?
Yep. Basset.
Boomer’s stumpy legs explain my
nickname “Sawed-Off.” But why do I call him
the “Shotgun”? From Hurricane Katrina, he
went to a shelter in Minot – a shelter that was
going to put him down. No one would adopt
him. He fought with other dogs. CDHS was
Boomer’s rescuing angel. Staff and volunteers
offered him love and patience, and the first
time I walked Boomer, I discovered the
Sawed-Off Shotgun could wag his tail as
hard as any other dog and loved to have
his belly rubbed.
Darrell, a retiree and
dedicated volunteer, was carefully
introducing Boomer to
other dogs. “He’s been in
solitary confinement so
long, he needs a few
friends,” Darrell
observed.
Boomer
was actually
learning to get
along somewhat. When
CDHS told us someone might
adopt both Boomer and Jonesy – if
We can’t wait
to meet you
- stop by and
visit us!
they could get along – Darrell and I agreed to
introduce them.
The following afternoon, we brought them
out to the lawn. Jonesy sat down cock-eyed
on one hip. With puppy-like fascination, he
observed the goings-on at the welding shop
across the road, seemingly oblivious to
Boomer’s prodding nose. Once the old hound
had satisfied his interest, little Jonesy turned
around to return the canine ritual. Boomer’s
eyes flashed. “Grrr!”
Darrell and I pulled the dogs apart. Boomer
threatened the pup with his stare. But Jonesy
absentmindedly studied whatever-it-was
across the road again, turning a cold shoulder
to the grumpy old-timer. Yep. Whatever. Big,
tough piece of old leather. Skippy-dee-doo.
The pup took no offense to Boomer’s poor
manners. Was there still hope? We decided
to take the dogs for a walk. Along the trail,
Boomer growled at Jonesy when
they stopped to sniff a fence.
But Darrell and I kept them
moving, and eventually
they fell in side-by-side,
scarcely seeming to
notice each other. Darrell
and I relaxed. Well, maybe
this would work, after all.
On the journey home,
the situation changed.
Drastically. Boomer slowed
and stared hard at Jonesy.
Suddenly, he pounced on
the puppy’s shoulders, teeth
lunging for the back of his
neck. Darrell and I yanked
the dogs apart. And then we
saw it. Boomer’s tail was wagging. Wagging?
We kept walking. A moment later, Boomer did
it again. The puppy rolled out from underneath
him and batted his paws at the old hound.
Both tails whipped high in the air. They
wanted to play!
Back at the shelter, we turned them out
into a fenced yard, along with Zaire, one of
Boomer’s previous acquaintances. Zaire’s
energy matched the puppy’s, and they tore up
the lawn running. Jonesy tripped over his ears
once or twice, performing an impressive back
flip. Every time they ran past old Boomer, he
grinned, wagged his tail faster … and watched
them zip by. Well, you could tell his heart was
in it. Guess he just isn’t spry enough to keep
up with those young pups.
It’s impossible to predict the futures of the
CDHS dogs. I never saw Jonesy and Boomer’s
potential adopter again. Jonesy found a
forever home, but Boomer is still waiting. “I
think Boomer’s getting less tough in his old
age,” Darrell says. He now regularly turns
Boomer out with a pack. He occasionally
growls at a newcomer. But when the dogs
tussle, Boomer just cheerleads on the
sidelines, wagging his tail. His favorite dogs
are still the short ones he can keep pace with
(wink).
I hope Boomer and Jonesy think of each
other now and then, because it was little
Jonesy who taught Boomer how to make a
friend. And to think Boomer was once going
to be put down! I’ll confess, I never thought
much of the old Shotgun – until now. It kinda
warmed one’s heart to see a grumpy old dog
like him warm up to a charming puppy like
Jonesy.
The babysitters’ club by Tom Pederson
It was a Sunday afternoon when Susan called
from CDHS; she had gone out to help care for the
dogs just rescued from a puppy mill near Scranton.
There was a fresh litter of pups whose mother was
too sick to care for them and no one was going to
be around that evening for the overnight feeding.
“I need to bring them home just for the one
night”, she explained. Well, as I’m writing this,
it’s 45 days later and we just returned them this
afternoon. Here’s our story.
The first few weeks were the most labor-intensive;
feedings every 3-4 hours around the clock,
each session lasting a minimum of 90 minutes.
We quickly settled into a routine, Susan was
“input”, initially using a syringe, but within a few
days getting them used to a bottle. I learned that
feeding nipples came in different flow rates as we
went through every variation. However, the pups
couldn’t distinguish between the bottle and my
nose, which was extremely popular. My assignment
in the feeding process was preparation and
output. Before each pup was fed, I would clean it
with a wet cloth and towel. After the feeding, I’d
massage and bounce the infant around to facilitate
“output”; which isn’t nearly as glamorous as it
sounds. At this point their eyes hadn’t opened,
they weighted about a pound each and when set
down they would slide around on their bellies.
We kept them in an eighty degree temp room,
at first in a plastic wading pool and later with a
2 ½ ft high fence. As the pups grew older, we
observed their progress, eyes opening, learning
to walk, needle teeth popping through and finally
developing their individual barks. I should admit
at this point that we didn’t have kids and although
we’ve raised a number of kittens and puppies, this
was my first experience with fresh borns. I found
invaluable information on the Internet, but the
real help was advice from the staff at CDHS, Jerry
Buchholz and his staff at Bismarck Animal Clinic.
Jerry actually saved the life of little Barry when he
became sick and required an overnight stay at the
Clinic.
Yeah, Barry – we did name them all. Bubba,
Beyonce, Dora, Cruiser, Missy, Harry, Barry, and
Larry. I won’t bore you with the details, but each
name was based on a behavior or characteristic.
Sure, I know their new families will rename them,
but those are the names we’ll remember.
Our first break was about three weeks into the
project when we switched from bottle feeding to
self-feeding. Although we’d still get up overnight to
check on everything, we finally were able to sleep
for more than three hours at a time. I never realized
what new parents go through, Kudos to them.
The biggest job since that point was keeping
their quarters clean. We changed out the bedding
4-5 times a day and Susan made a near-daily trip
to the Laundromat in addition to the laundry we
did at home. I found that the mere act of moving
the guys from their soiled pen to the holding
bucket and back to the newly cleaned pen brings
on another round of “output”-- several times to
the point where we’d need to do a second round
of new pads within 20 minutes of the first. That,
and the staggering gait when they started walking
Stack
led to referring to them collectively as the S**T
Zombies, a term that stuck even after they became
more agile.
The most rewarding part of our project was
PlayTime; once or twice a day we spread out
sheets and blankets in the sunroom and let them
run around until they would fall asleep. My spot
was on the floor where I was the base for an
ongoing game of King of the Mountain. They also
delighted in hauling around whatever objects they
would find and destroying Susan’s plants. And, of
course output.
We already have three dogs and four cats, all
rescue pets of course. So keeping one isn’t an
option, and frankly there’s no way I could decide
among them, they’re all special. But whoever is
lucky enough to provide a forever home for one of
my kids, know that you’re getting an extraordinary
addition to your family. If you interested in seeing
how my guys progressed and grew, I’ve posted a
few videos at www.youtube.com/thormonster.
CDHS teams with marketamerica.com
to earn money online
When making your online purchases, please check out the new way that CDHS is earning money
to help the animals. We have teamed up with marketamerica.com to earn money for any purchases
made through the CDHS web portal.
Through the website, www.marketamerica.com/cdhs, any purchases made help CDHS earn
money and help the buyer earn money back as well (from 2 percent to 35 percent). Plus, if you refer
someone to the website, you can also gain money back into your account (0.5 percent).
The site is a portal to literally hundreds of online stores, plus marketamerica does promote some
of their own products as well. You can access stores like Target, Wal-Mart, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Macy’s,
Old Navy, Best Buy – basically just about any online store that you can think of.
Getting started is easy. Log on to www.marketamerica.com/cdhs and register as a preferred
customer. Click “sign in” in the upper right-hand corner, enter your e-mail address and select the
“No I am a new customer” option. Then just follow the prompts. Use the Search box at the top of
the screen to find a specific item that you are shopping for, or use the Shop Partners link to find a
specific online store.
Jean Kranzler is our customer
manager and her information is located
on the website in case you have
questions about the service. The
service does not share your e-mail or
other information with anyone unless
you give permission.
Sign up today and then when
you need to order something online,
remember to log on through the
CDHS web portal address and you’ll
be helping the critters at the shelter
just by shopping. Bonita Beyonce
