Don’t be afraid of empty space!
Pairing dragonflies perform aerobatic mating games whilst
on the wing during late summer.
This primitive newly created bonsai of Red Flowering Currant
(Ribes sanguineum) was first photographed for Bonsai Review issue
70 in April displaying beautiful magenta flowers. Now in late summer,
the season is marked with fruits of grey/blue and is displayed with a
scroll of pairing dragonflies. With many details and textures to
explore in this two piece display, further items would only clutter and
confuse the scene. The large empty space allows room for quiet
contemplation, and, maybe, enjoy the scent of early autumn aromas.

Greenwood Bonsai Studio
7 th -8 th SEPTEMBER
It is not long now until the 7 th & 8 th September and the annual Bonsai Bash at Greenwood Bonsai Studio, Nottingham.
As the many who have attended this completely free event before will be aware this is an excellent opportunity to witness Corin Tomlinson
styling larger bonsai than could usually be tackled in the time available at a normal club night. There will be an all day demonstration on the
Saturday where Corin will work on a Japanese raw material Juniper and another all day demonstration on the Sunday working on a large
imported Japanese white pine. As well as the demonstrations, we are pleased that Ashfield Bonsai Club are again, putting on an Exhibit of
some of their members bonsai.
There will also be a display of some of Corin’s Bonsai, including some of the trees styled at previous Bonsai Bash events.
Petra Engelke’s Bonsai Pot and Ceramics studio will be open and there will be a chance to see her doing outdoor Raku firings during the
weekend.
For those thinking of attending wondering how much spending money to bring there will be 10% off all bonsai during the event!
We will once again be holding Paul’s potty pot sale (discounted used and slightly damaged bonsai pots of all types and sizes at silly prices)!
There will be food and refreshments available throughout the event too. We hope to welcome you to our Nursery for this year’s event –

Manchester Bonsai Society won a
Silver Gilt Award again with an
innovative stand designed by Anna
Dodd, which was highly praised by
members of the public at RHS Tatton
Show.
Pictured below- this summer display features English elm (Ulmus procera) 51cm, pot by the late Derek Aspinall. The pheasant figurine
accessory may signify a time toward the end of the season in rural England. The arrangement was created to honour a visit by the wife and
daughter of the late Alan Green. He originally collected this tree after a fall from tripping over the connecting root sucker.
…..An auspicious moment perhaps!
Making a display arrangement for guests and visitors is always an integral part of
etiquette at Bonsai Presentations. The tokonoma ensures that bonsai are
presented with pride and dignity with consideration to space and tranquillity.
It is important to un-clutter the mind to fully absorb the topic of display.
Arrangements are best deciphered by spectators when quiet calm ensues, and the
mind is then provoked by minimal content and precise placement leading to a
revelation of sublime enlightenment.
