Seniors Health Memory Loss - Is it Dementia? Kim Presiloski addresses your questions about dementia Mary, an 83 year old mother and grandmother, is starting to forget things she used to remember. She now needs to keep a detailed calendar for appointments, is having trouble keeping track of her cards at bridge night, and struggles with familiar names. Mary’s family members are worried about her condition. Her daughter notices Mary can’t remember her famous pumpkin pie recipe, and her grandson observes that she’s repeating the same jokes and stories. Are these normal ‘senior’s moments’? Is it dementia? What should they do? Finding out what is wrong is the first step to getting help. Q: How does aging change the brain? The effect of aging on memory is different for each person. Many people experience slower information processing and difficulty concentrating as they age. This is due to a decrease in nerve cells in the brain. Long term and remote memories are not usually affected by aging, but recent memories may be affected. This means it may be more difficult to learn new information, and once new information is stored, it may take longer to retrieve it from memory. These changes, called age-related cognitive decline, are normal and are not considered to be signs of dementia. Q: What is dementia?
