Choosing a contractor<br />
Choosing the builder for your<br />
home or renovation is more<br />
than just a financial decision – your<br />
contractor will almost become part<br />
of your family for the course of your<br />
project. Are they someone who you<br />
can work with, someone you want<br />
to talk to nearly every day?<br />
Here are a few suggestions for<br />
choosing a contractor you can work<br />
with, and who can complete a home<br />
you will be proud of:<br />
The most trustworthy advertising<br />
is word of mouth. Were you referred<br />

to the contractor by a trusted<br />
friend, or did you find them in the<br />
newspaper, phonebook or online?<br />
It’s a cliché, but it’s often true: the<br />
best and busiest contractors do not<br />
need to advertise – their past clients<br />
are their best ads.<br />
Meet the contractor at their office.<br />
Are they proud of their space, busy,<br />
but organized?<br />
Visit one of the builder’s homes<br />
under construction. Is it clean<br />
and organized? Does it feel good,<br />
does it feel exciting to be part of<br />
a tremendous build? Watch your<br />
potential builder communicate with<br />
the suppliers and the trades-people<br />
on the job, and judge for yourself<br />
how their relationships look.<br />
Ask to visit homes the contractor<br />
has completed. Are clients proud of<br />
the work done, and pleased to show<br />
it off?<br />
Ask for references, and call them<br />
all. Even ask for references from<br />
those references: Who referred<br />
them to their builder?<br />
Who are their suppliers? Call those<br />
suppliers and inquire about the<br />
builder’s reputation for demanding<br />
quality, and for paying their bills on<br />
time.<br />
Ask your potential contractor how<br />
they price their jobs, does it sound<br />
straight-forward and honest?<br />
