Choosing the builder for your
home or renovation is more
than just a financial decision – your
contractor will almost become part
of your family for the course of your
project. Are they someone who you
can work with, someone you want
to talk to nearly every day?
Here are a few suggestions for
choosing a contractor you can work
with, and who can complete a home
you will be proud of:
The most trustworthy advertising
is word of mouth. Were you referred

to the contractor by a trusted
friend, or did you find them in the
newspaper, phonebook or online?
It’s a cliché, but it’s often true: the
best and busiest contractors do not
need to advertise – their past clients
are their best ads.
Meet the contractor at their office.
Are they proud of their space, busy,
but organized?
Visit one of the builder’s homes
under construction. Is it clean
and organized? Does it feel good,
does it feel exciting to be part of
a tremendous build? Watch your
potential builder communicate with
the suppliers and the trades-people
on the job, and judge for yourself
how their relationships look.
Ask to visit homes the contractor
has completed. Are clients proud of
the work done, and pleased to show
it off?
Ask for references, and call them
all. Even ask for references from
those references: Who referred
them to their builder?
Who are their suppliers? Call those
suppliers and inquire about the
builder’s reputation for demanding
quality, and for paying their bills on
time.
Ask your potential contractor how
they price their jobs, does it sound
straight-forward and honest?
