When a neighborhood comes together to beautify, build
bonds and introduce youngsters to the magic of gardening,
good things blossom. That’s what’s happening on Kirkland
Street in Utica, in the Oneida Square Project Community
Garden.

An initiative of Cornerstone Community Church, the twostage
undertaking includes a garden with six raised beds —
cultivated and cared for by neighborhood families — along
with an adjoining green space being developed as
a safe area where kids can play while their parents tend
the garden. Community Foundation grants — the fi rst
from the B. Victor & Ruby Rogers de Iorio Memorial Fund
and a second from the Frank W. Baker Fund — have
supported the two phases of the project.

Guided by the philosophy that children learn through play, the Hand
In Hand Early Childhood Center in Boonville uses play-centered
experiences to teach youngsters skills and concepts, all the while
surrounding them with quality care. Over 40 are served on a daily
basis, including infants, toddlers and preschoolers, with an afterschool
program nearly doubling the numbers during the school year.
The Center has received two grants from The Community
Foundation. The fi rst, from the Rosamond G. Childs and Jay-K Lumber
funds, helped support construction of its new facility on Route 12.
The second provided a padded, artifi cial grass surface material for
an outdoor learning center that adjoins the building. It came from
The Foundation’s B. Victor and Ruby Rogers de Iorio Memorial, Daniel
C. Hayes, Harry & Edith Hurd, John E. and Harriet T. McGrath, and
Alexander Pirnie funds.

Through a partnership in several successful lumber companies,
Melvin Kowalsky spent a lifetime helping others build. Through a
living trust that left a large portion of his estate to The Community
Foundation after his passing, to establish two funds, he will help
build forever.

The Melvin L. Kowalsky Designated Fund benefi ts fi ve agencies, in
equal shares: the Stevens-Swan Humane Society, Herkimer County
Humane Society, Resource Center for Independent Living, Oneida
County Historical Society and Jewish Community Federation of the
Mohawk Valley — two-thirds for its general use and one-third for the
United Jewish Appeal.

Fulfilling Your Charitable Goals
We offer a variety of fund types

your charitable vision: a Field-of-
Interest, Designated, Donor-Advised
or Scholarship fund; or you can
create an Unrestricted fund and
allow our Grants Committee to use
its expertise in responding to the
most urgent current community
needs.
Over the past 50-plus years, we
have established funds for donors
concerned about virtually every
type of human or societal need.

Bequest by Will
Including a charitable bequest in
your will is an easy way to transfer
assets to charity and make a lasting
gift to your community. When you
make such a gift to The Community
Foundation, we establish a special
fund that becomes your personal
legacy (also see Legacy Society on
page 36).
You create the legacy while
continuing to enjoy the assets you
need to maintain your current
lifestyle. What’s more, you are able
to re-distribute some or all of your
assets tax-free.
Examples of language that can
be used in your will for a bequest
can be found on The Foundation’s
website or provided by our staff for
use with your professional advisor.
Ways to Give
Lifetime Gift: Watch your
philanthropic dollars make a
difference and make a personal
connection to your community by
establishing a fund now.
Bequest: Leave a legacy by
making a long-lasting gift through
your will.
Charitable Remainder Trust:
Receive income from a trust
and designate the remainder to
create a philanthropic fund. You
receive an immediate charitable
deduction for a portion of the gift
and may avoid capital gains taxes.
Charitable Lead Trust: Create a
trust that stipulates a dollar amount
to go to charity over a specifi c
period of time. At the end of the
trust term, the principal of the
trust passes back to an individual
benefi ciary.
Retirement Fund: Gift the assets
from your retirement fund by
naming The Foundation as a
benefi ciary. You can start a
philanthropic fund and receive a
charitable deduction.
Life Insurance: The Foundation can
be designated as the owner and/or
benefi ciary of the policy.
General Gifts: Cash or stock gifts
of any size are welcomed and
appreciated at any time. They can
be made in honor or memory of
a special person or event in the
donor’s life, and can be added to
an existing fund or placed in the
general endowment.

The Love of

Take the love of a game, help youngsters at all skill levels
become better at it, create an atmosphere promoting
teamwork and trust — on and off the fi eld — and you begin
to understand what the Rising Stars Soccer Club of Central
New York is all about.
Located in Westmoreland, the club’s three-fi eld indoor
facility hosts some 170 teams comprised of over 2,500
young people from communities across central New York.
A grant from The Community Foundation’s Rosamond G.
Childs Fund supported construction of the complex, and
grants from the John A. Storm and Marjorie D. Wagner
funds helped build an outdoor pavilion.

The Wolfe-Smith Fund
Since it was established by Wesley Smith and Diane Wolfe in
2003, the Wolfe-Smith donor-advised fund at The Community
Foundation has generated more than 140 grants to organizations
and causes across the region and beyond — addressing human
needs from hunger to health care, education to the arts.

Legacy Society Continues to Grow

The Community Foundation’s Legacy Society honors those
who have chosen to shape their legacies through planned
gifts from their estate to The Foundation. These gifts do not
replace active giving during one’s lifetime, but rather are
a fi nal act of philanthropy that can create a new fund or
enhance an existing one.
Giving through an estate does not diminish a donor’s
current disposable income or cause fi nancial strain. It does,
however, add a gratifying dimension of permanence and
affi rmation that the donor is helping to ensure the future of
our community and will indeed make a difference forever.

Informed Leadership

Sharing a Resort Community’s
Historic Side
While best known for its resplendent mountains and lakes, the Old
Forge area of the central Adirondacks has a history as rich and
intriguing as its natural beauty. Preserving that history and sharing it
through exhibits, programs and restored buildings is the Town of Webb
Historical Association.

The Association is based in the Goodsell Museum, a century-old
Victorian home in the heart of Old Forge, whose grounds include an
original carriage barn and ice house. The Association also oversees
the historic Hemmer Cottage, located a short distance away on the
Old Forge Pond.

visitors back in time as well as outdoors
for a fascinating exploration of the
region’s rich history and habitat.
Since 2004 the Association has been the benefi ciary of 20 grants
from The Community Foundation, emanating from discretionary funds
as well as from several donor-advised funds, including the Town of
Webb, A. Richard Cohen Family and Janice Luck O’Connor Friends
funds. The support has been used for a variety of purposes, from
building restoration and improvements, to preserving and archiving
historical materials. The Association also has an agency fund at
The Foundation, started in 2006.

Our Corporate Partners are companies that have joined
forces with The Foundation to address broad community
issues, expand philanthropy and build nonprofi t
excellence. These businesses deeply believe in “giving
back.” They are partnering with us because we can
do more together than alone. We thank them for their

Identifying Needs
Launched in the spring of 2010, the website embodying
the results of the community indicators study undertaken
by the Leadership Alliance for a Vital Community is well
into its second year of being a resource for identifying
and addressing the region’s most pressing needs and
opportunities for positive change.

The Community Foundation is a partner in the Alliance,
along with Mohawk Valley EDGE and United Way of the
Valley and Greater Utica Area.
The website, www.hocindicators.com, provides a statistical
snapshot of key issues, and projects county-level data
benchmarks that agencies and organizations can use
to establish shared goals toward increasing the region’s
economic viability and sustainability.
