HEY, KIDS, LET’S PUT ON A SHOW! Rodgers & Hart’s Babes in Arms is the quintessential “show in a barn” musical. It has one of the greatest scores ever written for the Broadway stage: “My Funny Valentine,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” “Where or When,” “Johnny One-Note,” “I Wish I Were in Love Again,” “Babes in Arms” — these are a cherished part of the American songbook and the Broadway musical canon. So what is “uncommon” about such a hit? Just this: Few people have seen the real Babes in Arms in the last fifty-plus years. In 1939, Hollywood took the title (and, shockingly, only “Where or When” and the title tune), added Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, and released a popular film that only suggested the stage play. In the 1950s, Rodgers hired George Oppenheimer to create an entirely new script. Oppenheimer kept only the leading man’s name from Rodgers and Hart’s original musical comedy. When New York’s Encores! series presented the show in 1999, they returned to the original (as edited by John Guare) — and Babes in Arms was revealed to be more than just fluffy fun. In fact, Rodgers and Hart wrote a musical with a social conscience. The kids of Seaport aren’t just fighting to put on their show; they’re fighting against nasty racial prejudice directed at one of their gang. Leading man Val is unequivocal in his condemnation of bigotry — doubtless a radical notion for many in the 1937 audience. This is why the Babes in Arms was changed for the movie, and why it was rewritten. But once again, we’re bringing the original “babes in armor” back to San Francisco. We think you’ll agree the songs and the story are just as engaging as they were in 1937. — GREG MACKELLAN ABOUT THE CREATORS RICHARD RODGERS (1902-1979) and LORENZ HART (1895-1943) wrote their first shows together when both were still students attending Columbia University. Their breakthrough came with the score for a 1925 charity show, The Garrick Gaieties, which introduced the classic valentine to their hometown, “Manhattan.” Over the next five years they wrote fifteen musical comedies for Broadway and London’s West End before relocating to Hollywood in 1930, where they wrote the scores for several movie musicals, most notably Love Me Tonight starring Maurice Chevalier. In 1935 they returned to New York to write the score for Billy Rose’s circus musical Jumbo, launching a golden era that included On Your Toes, Babes In Arms, I’d Rather Be Right, I Married An Angel, The Boys From Syracuse, Too Many Girls, Higher And Higher, Pal Joey, and By Jupiter. In 1943 the partnership disbanded temporarily when Rodgers collaborated with Oscar Hammerstein II on Oklahoma!, but it resumed with a revision of their 1927 hit A Connecticut Yankee, which opened on November 17, 1943 — less than a week before Lorenz Hart’s death. For the next two decades Richard Rodgers collaborated exclusively with Oscar Hammerstein II on such musicals as Carousel, South Pacific, The King And I, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music. After Hammerstein’s death in 1960, Rodgers continued to write for the musical stage including No Strings and Do I Hear A Waltz?. In 1990, Richard Rodgers was posthumously honored when Broadway’s 46th <strong>Street</strong> Theatre was renamed for him. In 1999, Rodgers and Hart each were commemorated on United States postage stamps.
