Students in the Limelight
Shaftesbury has always been proud supporter of all athletes that attend this school. Not only have
we had dancers, hockey players, and a talented Tae-Kwan-Do competitor, but we also have a group
of 4 students who are exceptional swimmers. Erin Fones, Dora Modrcin, Jessica Ollinik and
Kennedy Overwater are all members of the Manitoba Marlins swim club that swim out of the Pan
Am Pool. If anyone doubted that swimming was an easy sport, here’s an idea of what their days
look like…up at 5:00 AM to swim before school, go to school, go back to swimming in the evening
and home by 9:00 PM. These girls swim 20 hours a week and do six hours of training outside of the
pool every week! What does all this practicing mean? How about burning 2000 calories per swim
practice, a great group of friends, a lifelong sport, plus an opportunity to attend a training camp in
Maui, Hawaii during spring break!!! In the end, after all their hard work and dedication to their nine
practices a week, they all agreed that they wouldn’t give it up for anything and hope that full
university scholarships are in their futures. Good luck girls!
The Titan Prep team ended their 2014-15 season in fine fashion. Playing in front of a highly
supportive fan base made up of family, students, and staff, the girls gave an entertaining
performance this weekend. Battling back in the gold medal game only to come up one goal short.
A heart filled thanks to all Shaftesbury staff and students who helped the girls have a fantastic season.
Your support had a major impact on the teams success.

Interested in trying a new sport and have some fun? Want to make some new connections here
at Shaftesbury? Come on out and try ultimate! Ultimate is a fast paced sport all based on the
“spirit of the game” that trusts players to play within the rules in an honest and friendly-yetcompetitive
environment. This unique way of self-officiating also allows players many
opportunities for leadership as well as situations for players to practice conflict resolution that
can easily be transferred to other areas of life. Spirit of the Game is best defined as: Play hard;
play fair. Season starts after spring break so anyone interested should see Mr. Grier, Mr. Striemer
or Mrs. Wiebe. Can’t wait to have you on the team!
Indoor soccer continues their season. Outdoor soccer, rugby and badminton are preparing for
their seasons.
Shaftesbury Students Give Back One T-Shirt Burrito
At A Time
A group of Shaftesbury High School students recently took a field trip of a different kind. About 30
students visited the Main Street Project. Our students made care packages with items including a t
-shirt, socks, underwear, toothpaste, a comb and anything else they thought would be useful. All
the items were rolled up into the shirt which in the end looked like a burrito. Shaftesbury teacher,
Harald Asu couldn’t help but call the final product a “t-shirt burrito” and the name stuck.
Armed with handfuls of t-shirt burrito care packages, the students set out for 75 Martha Avenue.
They gave their packages to anyone they believed could use them. The people they found were as
varied as the students themselves. There were happy people, sad people, grateful people and
suspicious people. There were people who had a sense of humour. Upon receiving his package,
one gentleman asked if we had anything in blue.
“The intention of a school field trip is to learn. Only the students will know what they learned from
this experience,” explains Asu. “We hope they will learn not to judge, to realize how fortunate
they themselves are and maybe even to learn to be life-long contributors to their communities.
From the comments I heard upon returning back to school they had learned these things and
so much more.”
Mr. Asu would like to thank Mr. Kaminisky, Mr. Woodhall, Mrs. Wiebe, and Mr. Boyd for their help.

Hockey Night in Shaftesbury
The first every Hockey Night in Shaftesbury held on March 22 was a great celebration of
Shaftesbury hockey . All three teams, Boy’s High School, Girl’s high school, and the Prep team,
came together to host the first ever Hockey Night in Shaftesbury. The evening was a collection
of great food, speeches and camaraderie. Mr. Harley hosted the event with his wit and dry
sense of humor that prepared the guests for what was to follow.
Each team had representatives provide a farewell to the graduating players, and roast their respective
coaches. A presentation was given to Mr. Woodhall and Mr. Plantje on behalf of the
school’s 25 years of boy’s hockey.
The intent of the evening was to raise money for each team to use for graduating players’
scholarships.
The evening was a huge success and plans are already in place for next year’s banquet.

SATS//SHARP
SOAR-1 and the Global Space Balloon Challenge
Shaftesbury Overhead Amateur Repeater #1 (SOAR-1) is SHARP's entry in this year’s Global Space
Balloon Challenge. The principal component in the payload is the Puxing PX-UV973 FM transceiver
which will be setup as a crossband amateur radio repeater. The VHF frequency used will be 146.520
MHz and the UHF frequency will be 446.100 MHz. The repeater will receive on either frequency and
retransmit on the other. At SOAR-1’s maximum altitude of about 100000 feet the line of sight range
will be close to 700 kilometres giving a potential radio footprint approaching 1400 kilometres in
diameter. Theoretically any station within this footprint could communicate with any other station
in the footprint. SOAR-1’s output will be limited to 4 watts. Cities within this footprint include
Moose Jaw, Regina, Thompson, Thunder Bay, Fargo, Minneapolis, Pinawa and Winnipeg.
SHARP students will launch their high altitude balloon from a site still to be determined but it may
be from a school in western Manitoba as was done with SHARP-3.1 which launched from behind
Treherne Collegiate. Students back at the SHARP/SATS ground station will attempt to run a radio
network and record contacts with amateur radio stations to evaluate the performance of their high
altitude repeater.
Shaftesbury student radio amateurs include Dylan Fijal (VE4DFJ), Diljot Garcha (VE4DSG),
Kendra McTavish (VA4MCT), Navjot Garcha (VE4NSG), Tara Towns (VE4TET), Angie Liu (VE4ANG),
Jordan Bowley (VE4JRB), Teo Ugrin (VE4TEO) and Bryce Jenkins (VA4VBC).
SHARP students will be assisting staff and students from five other Winnipeg high schools with their
first high altitude balloon flights and Global Space Balloon Challenge entries. The teams Shaftesbury
is working with include Garden City Collegiate (Gopher Space), Maples Collegiate (Net Force),
St. James Collegiate (Jimmies), Fort Richmond Collegiate, and Miles Mac. All schools will launch
together then track and chase the balloon constellation as it travels to a landing south of Winnipeg.
Garden City’s team “Gopher Space” visited Shaftesbury on Friday March 13 th to work on their GSBC
entry. So far there are 226 teams in 45 countries entered in this year's Global Space Balloon
Challenge. All GSBC flights will occur between April 10 and 27, 2015.

SATS//SHARP Cont’d
If the results from the SOAR-1 repeater experiment warrant, SHARP hopes to follow up in the next
school year with SOAR-2 to fly on a 3000 gram balloon. SOAR-2 could set a SHARP altitude record
of over 130000 feet. The possible footprint for SOAR-2 is shown below. Will a 4 watt transmitter in
southern Manitoba at 130000 feet reach Minneapolis? SHARP students will try to find out.
WARC Basic Short Course #9
Shaftesbury high school will also be hosting an amateur radio certification course on five Saturdays
from April 11th to May 9th. Registration for the course is online at
http://winnipegarc.org/basic_course.html .
