For God and Country
VOL. 67 405 W. MAIN AVE. SUITE 4-A, WEST FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA, JUNE 2013 NO. 4
The Message (American Legion Auxiliary) Inserted In Middle Section
It’s Not Too Late To Attend The Convention
Convention plans are coming along very well according
to Convention Chairman Gary Skarphol. The program is
nearly finished, the golf outing is scheduled for Thursday
afternoon and transportation is being established to assist
the Convention visitors with a relaxed ease of getting from
one event to another. Guests for the Convention include our
National Commander Jim Koutz and National Commander
Candidate Dan Dellinger. These National Officers are very
busy this time of year and spend considerable time on the road
attending Department Conventions around the country. Due
to their busy schedules and only so many weekends in June
and July, they will be splitting their time at our convention;
Mr. Dellinger will be in Williston, Friday and Saturday with
National Commander arriving Saturday and departing Sunday.
They will be reporting on the business of the American Legion
and the impact on our members and veterans.
The National Officers will be flying into Williston so they
won’t need a traffic report, but for the rest of us, the question
regarding traffic in Williston seems to be the “elephant” in
the room for a quite a few Legionnaires considering the
trek to attend the convention this year. Several issues have
been resolved within the city of Williston, the truck by-pass
has been completed, the four-lane Hwy 2 from the north/
east is finished and traffic management inside of Williston
is rather smooth and consistent. Leadership has made a
couple of trips for meetings with the Convention Committee
in Williston and has been very pleased with ease of getting
through and around the community. The committee has also
arranged for significant transportation shuttles to move our
legionnaires from event to event as necessary.
Traveling in from Minot on Hwy 2 made the trip very
easy and enjoyable. The activity is quite interesting and
the drive was very simple. Traffic is very comparable to
driving in Bismarck, Minot or Fargo. The heavy truck traffic
has been re-routed; it is as convenient as practical. Don’t
make this misunderstanding the reason for not attending
your convention. The highway is all four lane roads and the
convention hotel is on the north side of town. From the east
take Hwy 2 into Williston, as you get to town, the first stop
light is a fuel stop, two more stop lights, make a right turn
into the Airport International Inn and you have arrived at the
NDAL Convention Headquarters hotel. The Williston Post
has pulled out all the stops to accommodate our transportation
needs while we’re visiting their community. Skarphol has
indicated, “All you need to do is get to the hotel, put your
car keys in your pocket
and they will shuttle
you to every event that
you need to attend to”.
Gary has set-up a fleet
of vehicles and drivers
familiar with the city,
people who live in
town and know the
by-ways around and
through the city.
Make the decision
to attend and plan on
having a great time. See
the hotel list below with
their contact information
below; register today for
a fun filled convention,
take time to visit
our fastest growing
communities in the
state. Hotel rates vary
depending on the rooms
and guest amenities
and the occupancy rate.
reservations and group arrangements. PLEASE follow-up
Senator Hoeven Presents Watford City Legionnaire WWII Military Medals
said. “When you learn the story of Donald Diederich’s
experiences more than 60 years ago in a dangerous world and
fierce war, you understand why he and his contemporaries
have come to be known as “the greatest generation.”
Mr. Diederich, now nearly 90-years-old, was a
Technical Sergeant who served in the U.S. Army from April
1943 until his honorable discharge in January 1946. He
served in New Guinea and Leyte Island as a winch operator,
unloading ships at sea and shore. His ship was attacked by
suicide bombers, was sunk, and had to be pulled to shore.
Donald stayed on the ship to help recover wounded
soldiers and fight fires. The next day he went back to recover
company papers on the ship despite being under fire. For the
next ten days he unloaded ships while under fire by Japanese
fighter planes. He is being awarded the Asiatic-Pacific
Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, WWII
Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and Bronze
Star, and WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button.
Congratulations to Mr Diederich for his service to his
country and for being a member of the American Legion
Post 29 in Watford City.
Left to right, former Technical Sergeant Donald
Diederich and Senator John Hoeven.
At a ceremony held in Dickinson, Senator John Hoeven
presented former Technical Sergeant Donald Diederich with
a host of medals Mr. Diederich earned for his service in the
U.S. Army during World War II, but never received. Donald
Diederich is a member of the American Legion Post 29 in
Watford City. The inquires made by the Senator revealed
documentation of the decorations on Mr. Diederich’s
discharge papers and the Senator worked to secure those
medals for Diederich. “These long-overdue honors mark
in tangible form, Donald Diederich’s courage and our
admiration, respect and gratitude for his service,” Hoeven
He indicated plans are being
developed to expand Hwy 85
start this expansion. Thus,
going through Minot on Hwy
Commander’s Comments
A huge thank you to all who attended one of our ten
Spring District Meetings. We especially would like to
thank all host posts for your hospitality. In my remarks,
I emphasized that it is not Legionnaires wearing white
caps, it is not our Department Office, nor our National
Office that makes the American Legion what it is today, it
is the Legionnaires from the 215 Posts throughout North
Dakota that makes this organization successful. Seeing
those Veteran’s Memorials in cities large and small, Legion
buildings with signage everyone can see and that Legion
presence at Military Funeral Honors, parades, ceremonies,
baseball games and everything you do in your communities
makes us proud. Thank you.
The 2013 Legislative session was an interesting one
at our State Capital in Bismarck! I made several trips to
Bismarck as did Bob Krause, Chairman of the North Dakota
Veterans Coordinating Council and Dean Overby, Chairman
of the Administrative Committee of Veterans Affairs. I
testified on behalf of the NDAL on four occasions at various
committee hearings. The ND Department of Veterans Affairs
and Veterans Home in Lisbon faired as well as could be
expected but as always could have been better. Unfortunately,
our legislators did not see the need to help us finance the
employment of a Department Veterans Service Officer. The
message received at our District Meetings was loud and clear,
we need to continue that position. We are currently evaluating
funding options and are proceeding with the interview process
to fill Jim Deremo’s position when he retires the end of June.
A responsibility of the Department Commander, which I
was honored to accept, is to attend the Department Conventions
of the other Veteran Service Organizations. On behalf of the
North Dakota American Legion I delivered our greetings and
wished them a great Department Convention. In my remarks
I encouraged their members to also join, if eligible, the other
organizations. We all have membership challenges and need
to support each other. The DAV Convention was in Mandan,
April 27th, the AMVETS met in Devils Lake, May 18th,
and the VFW in Grand Forks, June 1st, while the Viet Nam
Veterans of America (VVA) met last August in Park River.
As a member of all of them, I encourage all Legionnaires to
consider joining these other organizations if eligible.
The Department
complete transformation.
has a more modern look
keep the air space above our National Capitol Region safe.
A send off ceremony was held in Grand Forks April 28th
to thank and wish these soldiers well during their year long
deployment. It was the largest send off ceremony I have
attended. Patriotism and family support of our troops is
alive and well!
Western Region Department Vice Commander David
Rolfson and I attended the May Post meeting in Grenora.
As part of our three year Strategic Plan, we are visiting
Posts throughout the state. Grenora, close to oil patch
development areas, has growth potential, as Watford City
currently has. These Legionnaires are debating what to do
with their existing building or building new, and have some
financial resources to deal with the growth.
We are still over 500 members short of our 16,553
membership goal for 2013. Memorial Day is our last best
chance at getting those renewals in. Our Veterans who
have not renewed need to be reminded what we do for our
troops, veterans and youth. Memorial Day weekend is
an appropriate time to remind them we honor those who
have gone before us, and we honor our Flag, the symbol
of the United States of America. Memorial Day activities
are extremely important for The American Legion and for
every citizen in our Great Nation. May we honor our Post
Everlasting every day for these men and women who have
given us the freedoms we enjoy today. Thank you for all
the hard work you do in making these ceremonies happen in
your community.
As I stated in my very first Commander’s Comments
article almost a year ago, I want to thank you for allowing
me to serve as your Department Commander. Having served
in this capacity is an honor I will never forget. I hope I have
met your expectations. It has been a very busy and a very
fun year. Thank you!
Teeming With Life
Snorkeling among giant sea turtles and hundreds of fish
is a beautiful experience. I had this experience two years
ago on Turk and Caicos Islands. A walk through nature
reveals a vast variety of plant and animal life. Our God
designed such beauty and infinite variety. With spring upon
us and summer not far behind and as we seek a break from
the rigors of daily living, we need to escape to the beauty
of God’s creation. Farms around the world feed people
whose feet never walk in a garden or field. Seas produce
fish and other food to supply thousands of restaurants and
grocery stores. The words “take a hike” are often spoken to
dismiss someone. Yet, when we are feeling overwhelmed
by life’s pressures, taking a hike just may be what we need
for our troubled spirits. When we need a reminder of how
generously our Creator has provided for our needs, a visit to
a woodlands, prairies or waters of the world supplies ample
evidence.
It has been my honor to serve
God, country and the American Legion Department of North
Dakota as your Chaplain. With the coming of spring we
all feel a sense of newness in everything we do. So it is
for the American Legion Department of North Dakota. Like
everything new in nature at springtime, the time to prepare
for new leadership, define new challenges to advance
programs, set new initiatives to serve our organization, seek
new veterans, auxiliary and SAL candidates to recruit and
take part in fun activities are upon us. There is no time like
the present to do something new. Ask God to be a part of
a bold new adventure to his glory and for the good of the
American Legion. Don’t forget to thank him as you watch
everything grow to fruition.
God Bless you all. Enjoy your spring and summer. See
you in Williston!
Understanding Military Culture
describe military experiences, but the real life experiences
of veterans describing their experience, adds a lot to the
class. Veterans who volunteer to participate can expect to
spend a few minutes answering questions about their time
in the military.
Last week a veteran spent a few minutes in a class
describing being “blown up” and recovering from injuries,
which helped health providers better understand the military,
military healthcare, and the service member’s experience of
being deployed. It wasn’t easy for the veteran to talk about
his experiences but it enriched the class.
In my experience veterans want their civilian providers to
seek more knowledge and to be more understanding of them.
The goal is that veterans will reach out and get the help they
need from civilian healthcare providers and other professionals
who are more knowledgeable, accurate, and helpful in how
they work with veterans and their family members.
The classes are part of the Military Culture Certificate
Program through the ND National Guard. Civilian participants
earn continuing education credit while learning about the
lingo, function, and experience of being in the military.
Adjutant’s Perspective
Greetings to my fellow Legionnaires, Auxiliary
Members, Sons of The American Legion and our Legion
Riders;
We had a great Winter Conference in February and many
brave souls took on the weather to attend the conference in
Minot. But, let’s put that behind us and focus on the activities
and opportunities ahead of us at the Department Convention
in Williston. You will not be amiss for a lack of meetings or
events. The leadership of the various sub-organizations we
have in the American Legion family has filled the schedule
for convention.
I’ll take this time to give an overview of some of the
activities. First of all, the project of the ND “Remember Our
Fallen” has surpassed its first year on the road. It started last
April 28, 2012, with an unveiling ceremony at the Armed
Forces Reserve Center in Fargo. Its first public display
occurred at the Gate City Bank in Fargo and spent the next
52 weeks making 29 different stops to honor our fallen. The
last stop of this first year was at the Chamber of Commerce
in Bottineau, sponsored by the local American legion Post
#42. Thank you to all who have helped move this memorial
and secured your local corporate sponsor.
All of the NDAL programs are experiencing good
times. Boys State is coming up fast and by all indications
it could be experiencing another growth year. Oratorical
was another exciting year with ND youth presenting
enlightening speeches on
the US Constitution and
David Johnson
our Government. Thanks
Department Adjutant
to Ron Broderson and his
team for orchestrating such
a fantastic program.
Baseball is experiencing some growing pains this
year. A change to the way teams are registered has been
implemented by the National American Legion Baseball
committee. It is required for all managers, coaches and
leadership who have an ongoing contact or impact with
players to complete a background check. The purpose is
to be ahead in the youth management programs and not
have to react to an unfortunate situation. Boys State will
be following baseball next year, as they will be also having
their counselor’s complete similar checks.
The Department Convention is coming very soon, so
make your hotel room reservation. Contact the office for a
golf outing registration form for Thursday afternoon. Three
days of meetings, election of next year’s officers and the
most important is to reconnect with our Legion friends from
around the state. The National Convention in Houston is
coming this late August, so start planning for a good time
there as well.
See you all in Williston.
Unit 26 of Minot Held Annual Birthday Dinner
Refund of the Montgomery
GI Bill Not Automatic
Individuals who entered Active Duty after June 30,
1985, OR who served a combination of at least 2 years of
Active Duty service and 4 years of Selected Reserve service
after June 30, 1985, may qualify to receive a refund of the
$1,200 deduction for the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty
(Chapter 30) under the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33).
The amount of the refund will be equal to the number of
months and days the individual had remaining under Chapter
30 divided by 36 months multiplied by $1200. For example,
if an individual has 20 months and 15 days of entitlement
remaining under Chapter 30 prior to relinquishing the benefit
in lieu of Chapter 33, then the individual would receive
$683.33 as a refund. The calculation is (20.5 divided by 36,
multiplied by $1200). We converted the days of entitlement
remaining into a decimal by dividing the number of days
remaining into 30 days
The Veteran must request the refund in order to receive
the refund. There is no automated system in place to refund
those eligible Veterans. The eligible Veteran can send in the
request through the submit a question link, fax it to 314-552-
North Dakota American Legion Auxiliary - June 2013
www.ndlegion-aux.org / Facebook: North Dakota American Legion Auxiliary
A year in the life
of the Department
President
Four summers
ago when Past
Department
President Minnie
Flynn spoke with
me at Department
Convention I said
one of my favorite
words. “Yes!” What
I didn’t realize then
was how much of an
impact that simple
three letter word would have. I had been an adult
member of the ALA for 17 years at that time, held
offices and chairmanships within my local Unit,
and was at that time a District President. My
friend and mentor Charlotte Lassonde encouraged
me on many occasions to get involved and learn
so that I could move up. I thought that I would
move up, but I even surprised myself the day that I
said “Yes!”
The journey, from Vice President through
this current year as your Department President,
has been a busy and exciting one. Each year
immediately following Department Convention is
the National Delegates meeting. This is where we
find out who is going to National Convention, how
we are getting there, what hotel are we at, and
what are our duties. In the past three years I have
attended conventions in Milwaukee, Minneapolis,
and Indianapolis. This year we are going to
Houston. At the National Convention we meet
the National officers and chairmen and get the
opportunity to meet our peers and coworkers from
around the country. There are training sessions,
meetings, banquets, parades, and networking
going on! The National Convention is an Alpha
and Omega situation. One year ends and the
whirlwind of another year begins.
The Department organizational meeting
is held sometime between the Department and
National Conventions. This is a time where the
Department of North Dakota begins the year of the
business of the ALA. The Officers, Finance Board,
Program Chairmen, and Executive Committee
discuss the upcoming year for the NDALA.
Once we return from National we begin to
share what we have learned and what our plans
are with the Units. At the Fall District meetings,
the Department President shares what her project
is and brings information from National to the
Units. Traveling with the Legion Commander,
the President is on the road for two weeks at
this time relaying the ALA mission message and
encouraging grass roots members to continue
promoting the programs of the ALA. It is a
wonderful time to meet the Unit members and find
out about their concerns and ideas. The meetings
are usually followed up by the Commanders and
Presidents Homecoming celebration. As President
we are often called upon to attend celebrations
throughout the state, speak at functions sponsored
by other organizations, ride in various parades,
and visit schools. There is never a dull moment.
And while this all is happening, there is also the
day to day operations of the organization being
attended to.
In December, of course, there are the
Gift Shops at the Fargo VAMC and the Lisbon
Home. The donation of money, gifts, food,
wrapping paper, and time for these two Gift
Shops is phenomenal. This is a wonderful way to
remember our Veterans at the Holidays. I had the
opportunity to also visit with the folks at the Gladys
Ray Shelter in Fargo and drop off donated items.
The Fargo Unit graciously invited me to attend a
Christmas Party, as did the Pisek Unit.
Preparations get immediately underway
for the upcoming Winter Conference in
February. Meetings begin, planning sessions, job
assignments, and another article for the Message
needs to be written. Have we gone through a half
of a year already? By this time all members are
working hard on membership objectives, midyear
reports, and the various programs of the Auxiliary.
January zooms past and Winter Conference has
arrived. Once again we gather with our fellow
members to discuss the business of the Auxiliary
and to hear messages from our Officers and
Chairmen, remember our Legionnaires, and visit
with friends and Legion Family members.
Following this was the Washington
Conference, formerly called the Awareness
Assembly, where once again the National Leaders
of our organization share ideas and plans for
the ALA. It was a wonderful experience to go to
Washington, DC and visit with our North Dakota
Congressional and Senatorial delegation and
speak with them regarding the needs of our
Veterans.
There is no break in the busy lives of the
members of the American Legion Auxiliary. By
the time March came around we were all putting
our minds to nominations and elections, plans for
Poppies and posters, Americanism and parades,
education and scholarships and preparing for our
reports of the activities of the past year. Wait a
minute! Where did the year go? We go right into
the Spring District meetings in April, gathering with
our peers again, sharing more ideas and stories of
our successes. New District officers were elected
and discussions about Department Convention
resounded at the meetings.
May brought a change in the National
Organization and Membership meetings. The
meetings were combined with the Presidents
and Secretaries Conference into a Leadership
Conference. The incoming leaders for our
organization are beginning to make plans for the
upcoming year.
This summer we will look to many other
ALA members to say “Yes!” to take that step
up to serving this wonderful organization as an
officer or a chairman. I would like to take a
moment to thank those that have stepped up to
these positions and wish each one the best in this
incredible adventure they are embarking upon. I
also would encourage each member to consider a
leadership role within the ALA. It is an experience
you will never regret or forget.
I never knew that saying one little three
letter word could be so rewarding. Working
with a group that shares common goals and
a commitment to support and betterment for
Veterans, active duty service members, their
families, and their communities is a treasure that I
will hold dear for the rest of my life. Thank you all
for your commitment to this great organization and
thank you for making this an unforgettable year.
DEPARTMENT OFFICER ENDORSEMENTS
of our thoughts and projects that we organize.
As Membership Chairman for this past year,
I have had fun being an Angel in Service.
Remember, we are all Angels in Service.
Numbers are down, but yet we are making
numeric objectives. I don’t know what else
to do but plead with you to keep active,
encourage other members to pay their dues
and be as active as their health and age allows,
encourage women and juniors to become new
members, and remember why you joined this
organization. There will always be veterans—
we need to be there for them.
From President-Elect Marlys Aubol
As you are reading this article, it will soon be
time for another change in our organization—
the officers of 2013-2014 will be installed on
June 30th. Are you ready? I hope so because
we are ready—maybe scared to death, but we
are ready. All of the officers are new and so are
some of the chairmen. Guess what—we will
need your help. Let us all work together and
make this year a good memory. I want to have
fun! We need to work hard, but let’s have fun
along the way. One of the first things we will be
doing is moving our Secretary’s office to a new
location. I have volunteers ready to help. This
will be a serious and solemn move since this
office has been in place for several years. What
do we do with all the stuff? Where do we keep
all the memories safe? Thank you, Myrna, for
all your help over the past years. You will be
missed.
Thoughts--Do I wear the blue shoes? How can we
best serve our veterans? How can we gain new
membership? How can we keep our members
active? Do I wear my American Legion sweater?
Do I ask that person to help me with that
project? Do I call the newspaper for coverage?
Will the veteran accept what we are doing in
our community? Do I wear a dress or slacks?
Do I have all my papers in order? Do I have
everything I need? Have I read everything? Will
they accept my ideas? Can I do this? Do I have
all my pins in their proper place on my jacket?
Have I made all the necessary phone calls? Have
I covered all the bases? Will I remember what I
want to say? Do I wear black, red, or blue? Or
maybe green? Do we have our veterans in our
best interest?
As you can see, my thoughts are jumbled and
going in many different directions! I wake
up in the middle of the night and add another
item to my “to do list”. What to do! What to
do! What to do! Settle down and focus! OK! I’ll
try to do my very best. First of all let’s gather
at Williston and enjoy Linda’s final meeting.
I thank you, Linda, for all your guidance,
ideas, conversations, and laughs—it’s been
a good year! Job well done, Linda! After the
installation on Sunday, it will be “one day at a
time”. Veterans are important to us—that is
why we are members of this great organization.
But many times, other things come to mind
first. Let us keep our veterans at the forefront
My name is Arla Roth and I have been an Auxiliary
member for 32 consecutive years. I was a junior
member growing up and didn’t know what an
important organization the American Legion
Auxiliary was. When I married my husband,
Dale, who was very active in the Legion, I
rejoined. I have been active ever since. I’ve held
most offices in the Unit and served as District 7
Vice President for 4 years and District President
for 6 years and have held several Department
chairmanships. The past year I have been
Department Vice President and in June I will
be moving up to Department President Elect/
Membership chairman. I recently attended the
National Leadership Conference and feel that I
am now prepared for the job and will do the best
job I can for you and for the organization.
you have any last minute questions? If your
question isn’t listed, please contact me and
we’ll get more information for you.
Did the girls get information sent to them?
Yes. Each girl that has registered is sent a
postcard directing them to our website where
they will find more information on packing
lists, what to expect, Samsung Scholarship
information, dates, campus location,
registration times, and more!
Can girls still register?
Yes! Registrations will be taken up until
Sunday, June 9 th . The fee will be $225,
but ALL girls are still welcome to join us.
Contact Dana ASAP for details.
We have girls interested, but no funding. Is
there still funding available?
Yes! Contact Dana Thoreson and funding can
be secured for girls to attend.
Will there be transportation?
Yes! We will again be joining forces with
Boys State to use the bus they have lined up.
Contact Dana Thoreson to get girls signed
up to ride the bus. She will give you the
information and fees depending on where
the girls will get on the bus. Transportation
includes round trip; however if a girl decides
to ride home with her parents, there is no
reduction in transportation fees.
We are excited to have another successful
year at Flickertail Girls State! As always,
please contact us any time with questions or
comments.
Respectfully Submitted,
Department Service Officer (DSO)
A discussion was held regarding the future of the
American Legion Department Servicers position.
1. Jim Deremo is retiring effective June 30th.
2. The ND Department of Veterans Affairs is
like it will receive a PASS in the Senate Committee.
3. Lonnie Wangen of the ND Department of Veterans
Affairs is looking into other options to help fund
the Service Officers.
4. Jim Deremo currently processes about 500 veteran
claims a year. If the American Legion DSO position
is not filled, it will transfer the additional claims on
the DSO’s from other veterans’ organizations and
causing a greater slowdown in claims process.
5. Five applications have been completed and turned
into the Department to fill the DSO position.
Two of those applicants are not veterans. The
Department will continue taking applications and
Your NEC Report
Is it fair to say with last year’s spring season and this
year’s, we are having an average year??????
This year’s Spring Meetings in Indianapolis had a lot
of futuristic issues to discuss and approve or disapprove.
A key and ground breaking item was the issue of revising
the commissions and committees of the American Legion.
Some were eliminated, some combined and new ones
created. This was a major change as it had not changed in
over fifty years but with the vastly changed world it makes
sense to reexamine our approach to the issues. I truly believe
when the new book comes out following the fall meetings
the changes will be right for the future of our organization.
Additional revenue enhancement options through
USAA were made clearer for the Departments that chose to
be involved and in fact the first signers signed on during the
meetings in Indy.
For those planning to attend the National Convention in
Houston, I’d recommend you plan to stay until late Thursday
It has been said, “Ken, has an uncanny ability to remove
personal emotion from the equation to produce results that
are proven to be logical which provide realistic solutions to
the challenges that a program such as ours encounters.”
Ken graduated from Wildrose High School in 1959, he
actually volunteered for the draft, entering the U.S. Army in
1959 serving in the Panama Canal Zone during the Cuban
Missile Crisis, separating and returned home in 1962.
Returning home, he started his life in the agricultural world
at the Nelson Grain Company, growing with the company,
and after fifty-one years of loyalty, he became the President
and is part-owner. In conjunction with managing the Grain
Company, Ken is in partnership with his son to farm and
raise cattle in Hamlet.
Beyond the day-to-day, Ken is actively involved in his
community; a longtime member of the Wildrose Volunteer
Fire Department serving as its Fire Chief the past 15 years.
Ken has also been active and served as the President of the
Wildrose Lion’s Club for 15 years as well. He is a member
of the Grace Lutheran Church, stepping up to serve multiple
terms on the church council and provide the leadership of its
Presidency.
As a legionnaire, Ken has been a member for 46 years,
serving multiple tours as the Post #110’s Post Commander;
Commander. He has served nine years on the Board of
Trustee of the ND Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND. Ken Vatne
Service Officer’s Column
This will be my last official article for the North Dakota
American Legion News. I am officially retiring effective
June 30, 2013.
I have had the honor of serving our veterans for past 35
years and have thoroughly enjoyed serving them. When I
first started, there were still Mexican Border War and World
War I veterans to serve. So through those wars right up to the
present ones, we have been serving our veterans and fighting
for their rightfully earned benefits. Some of the cases have
been very heart breaking and all of them have earned the
right to the very best representation we could offer.
I think back on the battles we’ve waged over these many
years and know that The American Legion was out front on
most, if not all of them. We all know that the Legion wrote
the original WW II GI bill that changed the landscape of
America. The Legion fought for, and still does, a proper
funding for the VA.
Then, we learned about cancer causing ionizing
radiation and the thousands of GI’s that were exposed to it.
And yet, the government kept telling everyone for years that
they weren’t exposed to enough radiation to cause cancer.
That turned out to be a bold face lie and it was only after
the so-called Atomic Veterans sued the government, that
the government documents revealed that the government
knew all along that our GI’s had been exposed to excessive
radiation. Unfortunately, thousands of them had already
died from cancer caused by radiation by that time.
And then we had the government doing other things
and denying or at least now telling GI’s they did them such
as LSD experiments as part of its ongoing chemical warfare
program; Operation SHAD where they sprayed chemicals
inside ships and never told the sailors they had done it.
And of course the biggest fight was on Agent Orange
that was sprayed in Vietnam. For years the government
denied any culpability in this issue and again it wasn’t until
the Vietnam veterans sued the chemical companies that
made Agent Orange that the real truth came out. But it was
still a fight to get Agent Orange and the disabilities it caused
recognized by the government. I can say that the American
National American Legion
Programs and Projects
Each year, The American Legion, Department of North
Dakota, makes contributions to our National projects. These
donations are made at the National Convention on behalf of
our great state. Donations are consolidated at the Department
level and presented to the National Commander this year
on stage at the National Convention in Houston, Texas.
Individual, Post and Gaming donations are welcome and
encouraged. Please help us make a significant contribution
to these very important projects.
Orange study with
the Doctors Stellman,
a husband and wife
Jim Deremo
Department Service Officer
epidemiologists from Columbia University in New York,
showing that study definitely showed that Vietnam veterans
had more health problems than the non-Vietnam veteran.
This study was done in South Dakota and I was privileged
to be a part of it.
And from there we then had the so-called Gulf War
syndrome from Desert Storm which apparently nobody
has figured out yet what causes that. And of course now
we have our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans entering the VA
system. I must say that I think the VA has done a lot better
job of reaching out to this group of veterans than they ever
have before and I applaud their efforts. Nonetheless, we
must be vigilant here because the Congress has a very short
memory once the war is over and they tend to cut benefits
and services.
And, of course, we all know about the claims backlog
in the VA. I don’t know if they will ever get it under control
but someone needs to figure out how to do it because our
veterans are, in many cases, becoming homeless waiting for
the VA to decide their claims.
Lastly, one of the most disheartening situations with
our veterans is the suicide rate that continues to climb. I
don’t think this is a new phenomenon with our present day
veterans but it certainly is more on the front burner than it
ever has been.
In closing I would like to thank the entire American
Legion Family for the opportunity over these years to have
served America’s most deserving citizenry. It has been a
pleasure! I take comfort in 2 Timothy 4:6 “For I am now
ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have
kept the faith.” On leaving, this verse sums up my career in
helping out veterans. God bless you all!
Membership Clean-Up 2013
North Dakota American Legion Membership Chairman
Don Weible presented each District Commander and
Vice Commander a ND Dust Pan he made for the “2013
Membership Cleanup” at our Winter Conference. Don
reminded us all that it is the last 10% that is the hardest to
obtain and that we have done a good job thus far it is now
time to finish the job. Everyone needs to help to get those
last few renewals in and work hard to sign up new members.
