Workshops offered on managing chronic conditions
Chronic diseases—such as
heart disease, cancer and diabetes—are
the leading causes
of death and disability in the
United States. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) offers extensive evidence
and statistics on chronic diseases
and why Americans should learn
how to better manage their conditions
and take control of their
lives and health.
According to the CDC—
7 out of 10 deaths among
Americans each year are from
chronic diseases. Heart disease,
cancer and stroke account for
more than 50% of all deaths
each year.
In 2005, 133 million Americans
– almost 1 out of every 2
adults – had at least one chronic
illness.
About one-fourth of people
with chronic conditions have
one or more daily activity limitations.
Arthritis is the most common
cause of disability, with nearly
19 million Americans reporting
activity limitations.
Diabetes continues to be the
leading cause of kidney failure,
nontraumatic lower-extremity
amputations, and blindness
October 15 through December 7!
Every year, persons with
Medicare have an opportunity
health and drug plans that work
best for them. If your coverage is
working for you, there is no need
to make any changes. However,
if you want to compare Medicare
health plans or to join, change
or drop your insurance, Medicare’s
period between October 15 and
December 7 is the time to do it.
Then, your plan materials and
I once sat down and calculated
how many meals my Mom
had made for her husband and 6
kids during her lifetime. You
know, three meals a day seven
days a week with rarely a meal
eaten out or someone missing
from the table. That rough calculation
was about 240,000!
That’s right almost a quarter
of a million meals served up with
love and never a complaint and,
now that I think about it, rarely
a thank you from the hungry
recipients.
How many loads of dirty
laundry, baskets of wet clothes
hung on a line in the back yard,
shirts ironed, pants ironed and
folded, socks matched and
rolled, rooms cleaned, shelves
dusted, wounds healed, broken
hearts mended, bits of advice
shared over those many years of
being “Mom” to so many?

one to realize that “housewives”
have been under-appreciated. If
I hadn’t been forced to watch
this wonderful, caring, lovely
lady waste away in her final
years I may have never appreciated
her contributions. There’s
something about watching each
and every aspect of her—her
very essence—being stripped
away that leaves you very, very
sad.
You probably guessed by
now that Mom had Alzheimer’s
Disease. Good guess, she actually
had Dementia one of Alzheimer’s
ugly sisters.
In addition to being beautiful
and talented (isn’t everybody’s
Mom) Jane Burns was the ultimate
judge of what was “proper.”
She cared passionately
about things like manners and
respect! How ironic it was when
this most proper lady began to
converse with total strangers and
say totally inappropriate things
to friends and family.
One could only wish that
the decline would have stopped
at socially inappropriate! Over
time she lost everything; her
memory, her dignity, her good
health, her concern for personal
appearance, her appetite, she
even had her wedding and birthstone
rings stolen from her to
complete the bizarre disappearing
act that played out before her
bewildered friends and family.
I have worn an angel on my
lapel daily for the past 16 years.
When I was handed an Alzheimer’s
bracelet 10 years ago,
I put it on and have worn it ever
since. The angel was among
the possessions my Mom left
and I wear it in her honor. The
bracelet is a constant reminder of
how much I want to “get even”
with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
several years ago and it has been
an honor to do that each year.
It’s not walking a mile in a park
that makes me feel good, it’s
knowing that we’ve put another
$50,000 on the table to beat this
dreaded disease.
This year we will walk again
on September 22nd, from Stone
at 9 a.m. Everyone is invited.
If you have lost someone to
Cowell’s granddaughter, Ally,
who was the lucky winner of the
daughter, Marlee. It is
always nice to meet the families
soon!... Get well wishes go out to
Don Broadwater, Betty Cogar,
Gloria Roberts and Pauline
Lint… On July 25, Samantha,
What a nice treat. Thank you so
much! Another treat for us that
hope their stay in our community
is a long and enjoyable one... On
Maggi. Greene County residents
thank him… Pat also distributed
gasoline cards to members who
help with the meals-on-wheels,
thanks to a group from Jefferson-
Morgan High School who donated
the proceeds from their talent
show to our center. Thank you
to everyone who helped with the
“Stuff the Bus” project. Because
of your generosity, some needy
children will begin this school
year well supplied… Pat shared
some information on the opportunity
to become foster grandparents.
Pauline Lint suggested we
take advantage of this because her
experience as a foster grandparent
was so worthwhile and rewarding…
In closing, thanks to Pat
for all she does. Also, thanks to
Bill Bebber for setting the tables
every week; to Monnaruth Tennant
