Once upon a time, alcohol was discovered and people started
mixing and experimenting leading to surfacing of cocktails.
Undoubtedly, this is the best fairy tale that exists which showed
a literal act of “the happily ever after”.
One of the things that most influenced our lives are the Disney
cartoon characters. We have grown up knowing them and we
found inspiration in them. The most amazing fact of all the
Disney cartoon characters is that each and every character is
unique and has a strong personality. This is also similar to
cocktails; each cocktail is different and reflects a different
characteristic of their own.
The individuality of those characters inspired us to put together
this book, consisting of cocktails that were created inspired by
Disney characters or cocktails. Also, the aim of this book is to
give important information about cocktails.
3
The history of cocktail is an unsettled argument. However, the first published
definition of the Cocktail appeared in an editorial response in The Balance and
Columbian Repository of 1806 which read: "Cocktail is a stimulating liquor,
composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters." It is this definition of
ingredients that we continue to use when referring to the 'ideal' cocktail.
It is believed that people have been mixing drinks for centuries, but it wasn't until
the 17th and 18th centuries that the precursors of the cocktail (the
Slings, Fizzes, Toddies and Juleps) became popular enough to be recorded in the
history books.
There are as many stories behind the origin of the name cocktail as there are
behind the creation of the first Margarita or the Martini. As always, some are
preposterous, some believable and who knows, one may be the truth. None the
less, the stories are interesting.
A popular story behind the cocktail name refers to a rooster's tail (or cock tail) being used as a
Colonial drink garnish. There are no formal references in written recipes to such a garnish.
The rooster theory is also said to have been influenced by the colors of the mixed ingredients,
which may resemble the colors of the cock's tail. This would be a good tale today given our
colorful array of ingredients, but at the time spirits were visually bland.

The British publication, Bartender, published a story in 1936 of English sailors, of decades
before, being served mixed drinks in Mexico. The drinks were stirred with a Cola de
Gallo (cock's tail), a long root of similar shape to the bird's tail.
Another Cocktail story refers to the leftovers of a cask of ale, called cock tailings. The cock
tailings from various spirits would be mixed together and sold as a lower priced mixed
beverage of (understandably) questionable integrity.
These are the most commonly believed origins of “cocktail”. However, it may
have originated, cocktails was and still is standing up to its demands and evolving
with each day.
4
Gin Based
Gin is a flavored spirit made from juniper berries. Gin originates in
Netherlands. This is the most commonly used spirit in making cocktails,
mainly London dry gin. It is often mixed with sweeter ingredients like
tonic water or vermouth to balance its dryness.
Rum Based
Rum is native to the Caribbean, it is made from sugarcane. There are
three main types of rum. There are light rum, gold rum and dark rum.
Light rum has a general sweetness but a very little taste. It is filtered
after aging to remove any color. This is served as a base for cocktails.
Gold rum obtains it’s color through addition of spices and
caramel/color, but historically, from aging in wooden casks. Dark rum is
aged longer in heavily charred barrels. It has a much stronger flavor.
This is also commonly used in mixing drinks.
Vodka Based
The main ingredient in vodka production is potato. However, multiple
other ingredient such as rye, wheat and sugar molasses are used.
Vodka is never aged. And it is originated from Russia. Main producers of
vodka are Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Netherlands,
Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, US, UK and Russia.
5
Brandy Based
Brandy is a distilled spirit made from wine (grapes). The most
renowned varieties of brandy are Cognac and Armagnac from
Southwestern France. This is typically an after-dinner drink and used to
make digestive cocktails. Brandy is also famously known as burning
water or burning wine.
Whisk(e)y Based
Whiskey/ Whisky is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage made from
fermented grain mash including barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye,
wheat and corn. Whisky originates in Scotland. The main subcategories
of whisk(e)y are bourbon, rye, Tennessee, Scotch, Irish and Canadian
style.
Tequila Based
Tequila is a plant based spirit produced from the Blue Agave plant
(a.k.a. Maguey). It is a plant native to Mexico, it is juicy and similar to
the lily. The origin of tequila is an unconfirmed topic which is argued
on. However, tequila is produce in an area town called Jalisco in the
Western Mexican state called Tequila.
Wine Based
Wine is not a spirit. However, it is fermented alcoholic beverage made
from grapes and is often used in cocktail mixing as a base spirit. There
are two main kinds of wine, White wine and Red wine. The main
manufacturers of wine are France, Italy, Spain, United States,
Argentina, Australia, China, Germany, South Africa, Portugal, Chile,
Romania, Greece, Russia, Hungary
6
The factors that determine the type of glassware used for the cocktail is
mainly the general deco and the tone of the bar. But keeping it simple
is preferred best.
Here are some examples of the commonly used glassware.
Using the right proportion of the ingredient is a crucial, in cocktail
making. This resulted surfacing of several equipment which control the
amount of ingredients. Sometimes, experienced bartenders may
practice free pouring (that is directly pouring the measures if drink into
the glass, shaker or blender from the bottle). But to be precise, here is
the most commonly used equipment.
Standard Spirit Measure
Designed to measure exact amount of shots of alcoholic
spirits.1 jigger= 30ml.
Speed Pourer
This is inserted directly into the bottle and is
designed to control the amount of spirit mostly
using the thumb.
Optic Measures
This is designed for efficient cocktail making. Bottles
are places upside down inserted to this and this is fast
and easy to use.
9
There are several methods/ techniques in mixing cocktails. These
methods are:
Direct
As the name suggests direct method is when it is
directly into poured serving glass, over ice cubes.
Stir
This method is mostly used to mix two
types of clear alcohol together. Main
idea is to treat the cocktail with respectbe
gentle and stir.
The technique: Take a clean
mixing glass and fill it with ice. Measure and pour the
ingredients. Gently stir the spoon in circular motion, making
sure it moves around almost silently. When the ingredients are
correctly mixed and it reaches a nice and cold
temperature, it is ready to be strained and transferred into
the glass
10
Shake
Shaking is an aggressive mixing
motion. This method helps to mix and
chill multiple ingredients quickly and
efficiently. Due to the aggressive
nature of this method, getting the
correct technique is essential.
The technique: Add the correct
amount of your ingredients into a mixing glass. Fill the
mixing glass with ice. Place the shaker on top of mixing
glass. Hold the shaker, with a solid grip on both the
shaker and the mixing glass and shake hard allowing
nice big movements. Stop shaking when you reach the
right level of cooling and dilution (there should be
condensation on the shaker tin). Mostly, it takes around
10- 12 seconds. However, the exact time depends on the
style of the drink.
Blend
This method needs a blender.
It is used to achieve smooth,
cream drinks. The best way is
to begin with crushed ice.
Blender
11
Build
This is the quickest method of cocktail mixing.
As the name suggests building a cocktail is the
process of adding one ingredient after the
other and stacking them directly into the
glass, without shaking or straining. This
method is mainly used in cocktails that
doesn’t reauire extra cooling, mixing or
dilution and works best with ingredients that
will mix together easily.
Layer
Layering is a method where
patience and technique highly
required. However, if
successfully layered, the cocktail looks amazing and impressive.
The technique: You need to know the specific gravity when pouring
each ingredient. It should be poured from the heaviest to the lightest. A
spoon is needed so you can pour upper layers very slowly.
Muddle
The ingredients are combined in the
bottom usually pressing them with a
muddler before adding the majority of
liquid ingredients
Here are some factors considered in garnishing:
★Color Should be compatible and should provide contrast to the color.
★Taste Garnish should be edible as much as possible.
★Shape The shape of the glass determine the garnish used. Add on to
the shape of the glass.
★Name The name of the particular cocktail provide hint for what
garnish to be used.
Here are some garnish placements:
★Mounted Placed on the side of the glass
★Floated Floated in the mixture
★Sunk Dropped into the bottom of the glass
★Patched Patched on the side of the glass
★Frozen Frozen in or on the glass
