2 dozen apple and cinnamon muffins/cup cakes
2-4 dozen chocolate (depends)
2 large vanilla slices 48 portions
3 bakewell tarts
Tray bake carrot cup cake makes 38 slices
Tray bake caramel shortbread 45 pieces
10 individual banoffee pies
Lemon cake
Baked egg custard or angel delight for those
on soft diet!
2 dozen rice crispie cakes
Victoria sandwich
and whatever else the lads request…
The weekly cost for the Cake and juice round is £70 and
a trip to Headley Court is £150.
The military patients request their favourite cakes each
week, with the vanilla slices and the squidgy chocolate cake
being very popular, and they have even set up a Facebook
page called ‘THANK YOU QE (SELLY OAK) CAKE LADY’.
Some comments received are:
Sue – a truly amazing lady – my son remembers the
wonderful cakes (how could anyone forget... yummy) but most
of all the delicious apple juice and ice and then her generosity
when it was his birthday. Her weekly visits made an enormous
difference to him xxx
George – We met the ‘Cake Lady’ last night; we had gone
to see our injured son who got back in the country yesterday.
She is such a nice lady and was saying that she’s doing fund
raising to help (we brought one of her cups) and she’s now
spreading her wonderful humour and cakes down to Headley
Court. I think people
like her are few
and far between,
and if possible any
assistance that
can be given to
this wonderful lady
should. The smile
and morale boost
she gave our son and the other lads that came in
yesterday was wonderful to see as for most of the
day it was form filling, questions and more poking
and prodding.
My visits fit in with the hospital’s day to day running,
including making sure the cakes are only available after
the patients have eaten their hospital evening meal!
Editor’s note: Tesco’s have adopted Cakes 4
Casualties as their local charity and discount
Kath’s bill every week. Cadburys, who are based in
Birmingham, have given Kath a community pass so
she can buy chocolate and any other ingredient at
reduced prices.
If
you’d like to
help support Cakes 4
Casualties, you can also donate to
buy ingredients at the Queen Elizabeth
Hospital Birmingham Charity through their
online shop www.qehb.org/shop – search
for ‘Cakes for Military Patients’. We have
three sets of Cakes 4 Casualties mugs
and plates to give away – see
page 42 for details.
arship Air Crew
there are never two days alike, there’s always
something different to do each day. Today the
majority of the work was on one aircraft, ZA166,
(that’s side number One-Six to you and me). The
previous watch had given One-Six a foam wash,
which is like giving a car a car wash, but after a
foam wash there is work to be done to ensure
that all water collected from the foam wash has
been removed and the aircraft protected with
specialist compounds to prevent corrosion.
More significant engineering activities include
periodic compliance such as removing
soundproof panels and soundproofing from inside
the aircraft to provide access to the helicopters
tail rotor cables for wear and tension checks;
removal of main gearbox cowlings to provide
better access to the area for examinations and
visual inspections of system components in the
surrounding area; removal of exhaust covers
removed for rotor brake clearance and wear
checks, and much more.
On completion of all the work the aircraft is then
rebuilt, tools put away back into their respective
tool boxes and the aircraft fitted with the
necessary covers to protect the aircraft from the
elements. Even though the work in the hangar
may be complete, the job is not done until the
administration has been finalised. This means
that all work carried out has to be documented
on the relevant forms and signed for by those
responsible.
For the future, Jason hopes to advance within
his own trade, widening his experience within
the military environment and climbing up the
promotion ladder.
