Sheriff BOB BERRY and under sheriff CURT GARDNER were instrumental in helping solve a baffling Oklahoma
City robbery and slaying case when they assisted BILL EADS, homicide deputy of the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s
force, locate the slayer of D. L. MARTIN, Oklahoma City café operator. Martin was slugged and robbed of about
$125 Wednesday night of last week when he closed his café on north Harvey Ave. He stumbled into a café in
another part of town the next morning and died in an Oklahoma City hospital…
Officers BERRY and GARDNER, accompanied by EADS, went to the home of W. J. JAMES nine miles northwest
of Waurika and learned the wife of the alleged slayer had received a card from him but it was torn up. It was this
tip that led to the arrests of A. C. ACRE at Russell Springs, Kentucky. Mrs. Acree is a granddaughter of W. J.
JAMES… Acree is an automobile mechanic but had never worked in Waurika. Acree’s father lives at Russell
Springs and he was driving the car taken from Martin in the robbery…
W. E. ‘BILL’ KNIGHT
WILLIAM ENOCH KNIGHT was one of Oklahoma’s pioneers. He was born November 25 (no year given) at
Auburn, Texas and died in the Waurika Hospital January 10, 1938. He lived with his parents at Ellis, Jack, and
Young counties in Texas during his earlier childhood. At age of three, death claimed his father. He, his mother and
baby sister made their home with his uncle until her mother married HOWARD KENNEDY. When Bill was 18, the
family moved to Sugden, Indian Territory. Here Bill earned his first wages horse wrangling for the Suggs Brothers
ranch. For 9 years he worked on the ranch and developed his love for music by singing with the other cowhands at
roundups and other times. The Cherokee Strip opened for claims in 1889, Bill and his stepfather were among those
who ran for homesteads, locating near Union City. Here Bill helped till the soil that provided most of the food for
his parents and five sisters and later he plowed extra deep furrows for a sod house which was built. Indian
neighbors liked Bill and he developed a great comradeship with them, hunting and fishing together…
The family moved to what is now Jefferson county and lived east of Waurika before the town was established. Bill
helped drive the stakes for the commissary, which was established in a tent and held the food supplies for the men
engaged in town lot drawing and sale. In 1900 many people registered for claims and Bill was among the lucky
ones, drawing a claim 5 miles west and 1 mile south of Waurika. The first house was a half dugout. The same year
Bill’s parents filed on an adjoining claim and they began farming together, lasting for 19 year, then his parents
moved to Waurika. For the past eight years his sister Mrs. HATTIE KNIGHT and family lived with Bill. For three
years he was afflicted with cancer…
Bill was laid to rest in Waurika cemetery beside his parents. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. KNIGHT, and Mrs.
C. A. PACE of Clovis, New Mexico, and many nieces and nephews.
