foreword
origins: the tyrone
The past couple of decades in particular have seen us all in
Tyrone benefit greatly from the gaelic games legacy left to us by
those who went before us. Our generations too have worked
hard at leaving our legacy: gaelic games in our County have
never been stronger. And they benefit nearly every aspect of life
in Tyrone.
The Garvaghey project however represents something special
and something different. We believe it will provide an anchor for
gaelic games here that will run right through the 21st Century.
This brochure will tell you about the project. It will also tell you
how we intend, with your help, to fund it. We believe we have a
funding strategy which is practical and which offers the chance
for every gael in Tyrone to be involved. But we do need your help
to make it happen.
Garvaghey is a huge challenge for us all in Tyrone. But it’s one
that’s both necessary and achievable. We look forward to your
working with us to deliver something that’s very special indeed.
GAA family story
Over 100 years ago brave and visionary people established the
GAA family in Tyrone. For the next half-century the priority was
the survival of the family they founded … mostly in the face of
frightening odds. Those people delivered survival, and more, for
us, handing on a torch others took up.
Another generation delivered the second half-century of the
Tyrone GAA story: that story has been one of growth; of setting
new targets; and of reaching new places. Those GAA family
members left us a flourishing and prospering Tyrone GAA. That’s
something in which we rejoice.
Is it enough just to maintain that
unprecedented and willinglygiven
GAA legacy? Or do we
need to do more?
oidreacht … legacy
something that’s
cherished which is
passed on to someone
who’s cherished
continuity: it’s
now our turn
We too need to leave a legacy for the generations of the Tyrone
GAA family who will come after us. That legacy must have many
aspects – a vibrant, attractive and celebrated Tyrone GAA brand;
strong Clubs; an open and welcoming ethos; maximum numbers
of young people enjoying their participation across all parts of the
GAA. And the whole point of that legacy is that Tyrone continues
to benefit from the powerful personal and community well-being
that the GAA uniquely brings.
2 3
securing the next
century: garvaghey
how do we
make it happen?
Central to our family legacy is the flagship Tyrone County GAA
project that has been started, very appropriately in the GAA’s
125th year, at Garvaghey. We own the land there (43 acres);
have Full Planning Approval for our entire project; and have
completed our site-wide groundworks.
who is garvaghey for?
• The Tyrone GAA family but also other gaels right across
Ulster and beyond
• The men and women, boys and girls of Tyrone’s GAA Clubs
and schools
• Our County players, at all levels and in all codes
• All of us with an interest in the GAA
what will it contain?
• Five full-sized, fully-floodlit sand-carpet GAA pitches
• A full-sized “4G” floodlit, artificial pitch and a drills area
• Full team preparation; changing; and development facilities
• County GAA administration; meeting space; and archives
• Recreational; cultural; and heritage space and resources
• Spectator facilities and significant car-parking
why do we need it?
• Although we have 80 GAA pitches in Tyrone our needs
analysis tells us we currently need about 130
• On the schools side alone we have 250 GAA teams … but
only five fit-for-purpose schools GAA pitches
• Our Tyrone; Ulster; and national GAA strategies all prioritise
increased participation in gaelic games: Garvaghey is central
to achieving that
• Tyrone’s population is projected to grow by a fifth from 2001
to 2021: GAA-related demands will increase
what will it deliver?
• A fully-integrated Tyrone County GAA “heart-and-soul”,
bringing together all aspects of gaelic games and culture
• Unmatched facilities for our young
people … and for those who have moved beyond the games
• An engine to drive Tyrone GAA through the 21st Century
• A statement about something that’s important to us all
We’ve deliberately involved the entire Tyrone GAA family in
planning Garvaghey. Turning those plans into reality won’t be
simple. It’s easily Tyrone’s biggest-ever GAA capital project. But
the Tyrone GAA family has never before shirked turning ambition
into reality. We can’t start shirking it now. And we won’t.
Tyrone GAA has always matched ambition with pragmatism.
We’re doing that with Garvaghey by tightly planning and
managing it as a major, multi-faceted project. We’re also phasing
it, though not in a vague, open-ended way. Our ambition is to
have Garvaghey fully operational by 2013.
The project is being scoped and will be overseen by some of
Tyrone’s most experienced professional development and project
management people. Like the rest of us, they’re doing that
voluntarily, as their contribution to something that’s important to
them and their families.
Garvaghey will cost an estimated £6.7m to deliver. About £5.5m
of that still has to be raised. We have Tyrone GAA volunteers
working hard following up on GAA; Sport NI; and other grant aid.
But around £2.5m will have to be raised by the Tyrone GAA
family ourselves. That’s the challenge that faces all those of us
who celebrate the Tyrone GAA. And it is a challenge. But by
meeting the challenge we secure our legacy for those who come
after us.
ag cothromú gharbh
achaidh … levelling
the rough field
We’ve put in place a Tyrone GAA family-wide strategy to fund
Garvaghey. It’s based on the tried-and-tested GAA ethos of
depending on everyone and having a place for everyone; of
sharing our work and its benefits; and of putting in rather than
taking out. Just as we’ll all benefit from Garvaghey in our own
way, so can we all help make it happen … in our own ways.
Club Tyrone
our strategy
There are four strands to our funding strategy. That’s
a deliberate approach, to make sure there’s a way for
every Tyrone gael to contribute in a meaningful way to
this unique project. Our four strands are:
1. Club Tyrone: as an existing or new member
of Club Tyrone, our County’s main fund-raising
vehicle, a significant part of your contribution for
the next five years will be dedicated to Garvaghey
and will underpin its development
2. Garvaghey Patrons: people who make a
contribution of £5,000 to Garvaghey and whose
generosity will be publicly acknowledged as part
of the fabric of the new complex
3. Céad Míle Pixels: an internet-based approach
that’s a GAA first and which allows people to
contribute from £5 upwards in a personalised way
that will be marked for all time
4. Garvaghey Sponsors: people or organisations
who make a major investment in Garvaghey and
for whom naming rights may be available
a Garvaghey Patron …
pátrun gharbh achaidh
Now well into its second decade, Club Tyrone has become
accepted as the “best-in-class” County GAA fund-raising model.
Club Tyrone’s income for the next five years will be largely ringfenced
for Garvaghey. If you’re a member and you stay with us,
then Garvaghey will be part of your gift, not just to Tyrone GAA
but to the people of Tyrone.
If you’re not yet a member, then come and join us. You’ll find a
Club Tyrone Standing Order at the end of this brochure or you
can log on at www.clubtyrone.com
Those several hundred people who make up Club Tyrone
deservedly wear a Tyrone GAA badge of honour. They’ve woven
a thread through Tyrone’s recent successes. And they’ll underpin
our legacy at Garvaghey.
To mark Club Tyrone members’ contribution to the Garvaghey
project we’ll present each with a specially-designed plaque and
a unique Club Tyrone lapel badge.
is someone who commits to give £5,000 to the Garvaghey
project. Being a Garvaghey Patron represents a major
commitment to both the GAA and to Tyrone. We’ll mark that
commitment in modest but meaningful ways.
Each Garvaghey Patron will:
• Be publicly acknowledged and honoured as part of the
fabric of the Garvaghey building
• Have the opportunity for five years to buy two tickets for
every all-ticket game involving Tyrone County Senior teams
• Be presented with a unique Garvaghey Patron polo shirt
• Receive a Garvaghey Patron’s card entitling them to free
admission for five years to every game controlled by the
Tyrone County GAA Committee
• Receive a personalised plaque marking their contribution
and a Club Tyrone Patron lapel badge.
Please find a standing order on the back cover of this
brochure or talk to any of the committee members listed
at the back.
The GAA Clubs of Tyrone
have committed to become
Garvaghey Patrons.
3. www.clubtyrone.com
Céad Míle Pixels
is a first within the GAA. It’s a web-based approach to funding
which gives everyone, at any level and in any place, the chance
to make – and mark – their contribution to Garvaghey.
At www.clubtyrone.com we have on-line pictures of
Garvaghey; Tyrone GAA legends of the past and present; and
YOU, the people who will benefit from the project and who will
help make it happen. The pictures are made up of 100,000
pixels, each of which is on sale from as little as £5. Every time a
pixel is sold, the buyer dedicates it to someone or something:
you could put your own name on the pixels; or your Club’s name;
or you could buy them as a present for someone and dedicate
them accordingly. Even if you are afraid of technology but want
to make a contribution, please contact any of the Committee
members on page 14 and we will arrange it for you.
The £5 pixel may seem small. But this is about achieving
critical mass, about Tyrone supporters from home and
abroad coming together to jointly contribute to something
special. We do it as Tyrone supporters at Tyrone games.
Now we can do it for Garvaghey. When the pixel is “rolled
over” on the computer screen the buyer can leave a small,
personalised message.
The £10 pixel will give you the opportunity to
leave a larger mark that again will always be
visible, both on-line and at Garvaghey
Terms and Conditions
- Your link will be published on clubtryone.com for
five years!
- In case your site/image won’t be approved for any
reason, you’ll get a full refund of the money you paid!
- No offensive/images/messages/links will be
accepted. Tyrone County Committee has the right to
refuse any image/message they deem unacceptable.
- If your image/link is accepted and you later change
the content of the image/linked site to show offensive
material then your link will be removed without refund.
- There might be occasional downtime for site
maintenence but we’ll try to keep these to
a minimum.
What’s important and what’s different is that the pixel dedication
remains acknowledged for all time, both on the web and in the
completed Garvaghey building. This is about leaving footprints in
the sands of Tyrone GAA time. And that’s real legacy business.
Just log onto www.clubtyrone.com and take it from there.
The completed pixels will provide an everlasting
acknowledgement of people who helped make Garvaghey
possible. They give every Tyrone gael their chance to say about
Garvaghey: “I was there … I did my bit”.
Minimum £5 per pixel
An investment of £20 allows you to be creative,
giving you scope to post a picture … of your
family; a loved one; a happy event; or just
§ of yourself.
Thinking of £45? Well we hope
you’re now getting the message. Buy
the space for your company logo
or simply to give someone who
cherishes Tyrone GAA the best
Christmas or birthday present ever.
The choice is limitless. But, crucially,
it’s yours! And it’s marked for all time.
Approx. size of a £20 pixel that
will appear on the final plinth.
Ultimately what you see on screen will be transferred to a magnificent piece of public art,
placed in a prominent position close to the main building. Those plinths will be made up
of the thousands of pixels created by you and Tyrone GAA people like you. One day your
grandchildren, and in turn their grandchildren, will be able to see and appreciate how you
contributed to creating a home for the GAA in Tyrone. That will stimulate them in turn to do
their bit. And that’s real legacy.
Log onto www.clubtyrone.com for more details.
If you have any specific enquiries mail us at pixels@clubtyrone.com
Pixels sizes are for illustration
“People live in one another’s shelter” says the proverb.
It’s a basic principle we apply to the GAA in Tyrone.
It’s therefore one we also apply to Garvaghey.
Those who went before us left us a unique
and powerful Tyrone GAA legacy.
We’ve thought long and hard about how we can hand that
legacy on in even better shape than we found it.
Garvaghey is part of our strategy to do that.
