The mission of Little Athletics SA, as a
voluntary community based organisation, is
to develop children of all abilities by
promoting positive attitudes and a healthy
lifestyle through family and community
involvement in athletic related activities.
Welcome...
Welcome to the Noarlunga Little Athletics Centre for the 2013/2014
season.
Little Athletics is an Australian initiative that began in the early
1960’s & has developed into a well recognised & well respected
community organisation.
Noarlunga Little Athletics Centre has been established since 1976.
Through the hard work & commitment of many families during these
years, Noarlunga has developed & continues to grow as a very
successful member of Little Athletics SA. As members of the Little
Athletics Australia, we are a part of the largest volunteer-based
sporting group in Australia.
One of the objectives of Little Athletics is to provide children with the
opportunity to participate in a healthy recreation with their parents—
the motto being “FAMILY, FUN & FITNESS”. This maxim is
emphasized throughout all aspects of competition—from training to
championships!
By its nature, Little Athletics requires new parents each year to
continue. It is a sport that gives parents the opportunity to become
involved with their children rather than just stand on the sidelines as a
spectator.
Good luck, have fun & we hope all athletes achieve their best, in an
atmosphere of friendship & sportsmanship!
PARENTAL ASSISTANCE
LITTLE ATHLETICS IS A SPORT
RUN BY PARENTS FOR THEIR CHILDREN!
PARENTAL ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED EACH WEEK
FOR THE SMOOTH RUNNING OF THE PROGRAM
PARENTAL SUPERVISION
A Parent or Guardian MUST
be present at the venue for the athlete to participate. Tiny Tots
must have a parent or guardian with their child at all times.
CHAPERONES
Each week a parent is required to act as chaperone for each age group. Parents may wish to
roster this duty amongst themselves for the season. Try not to have the same parent do it each
week.
The responsibility of the chaperone is to:-
• act as supervisor for the age group
• record results of events on recording sheets
• provide each athlete with a results ticket for events
• encourage athletes to participate & have fun!
OFFICIALS
A parent who has gained ‘C’ grade membership to Little Athletics SA’s Official’s Club will
act as the official for each age group each week. ‘C’ grade officials have passed an ‘open
book’ exam on the rules & safety of competition events. If you wish to become a ‘C’ grade
official, please contact a committee member.
AT EACH EVENT PARENTAL ASSISTANCE IS REQUIRED
To assist with the smooth running of the program, the official for your child’s age group will
require help to run the field events:-
• SHOTPUT, DISCUS & JAVELIN 2 helpers are required—one to stake [mark the
point where the throw first hits the ground] & one to retrieve
• LONG JUMP & TRIPLE JUMP 2 helpers are required—one to stake [mark the point
where the athlete lands] & one to rake the sandpit
• HIGH JUMP 2 helpers are required to adjust the height of the bar
TIMEKEEPERS & STARTERS
Timekeepers are required on days that hurdles are run.
“MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK”
7
• Volunteer to help out.
• Little Athletics is run by
parents!
• Put your hand up and say “Yes,
I can help”.

PARENTAL ASSISTANCE
SET-UP & PACK-UP AT HOME MEETS
The Committee requires parental assistance for the setting up & packing away of equipment
each week. Families will be rostered to help each week by age group. The program will state
the age group required for the set up.
• SET-UP requires parents to arrive by 8:30am to help Committee members set-up the
equipment required at each event
• PACK-UP requires parents to help Committee members by having all equipment
packed up and left at the event if you are the last age group scheduled for that event.
Committee will then collect equipment with the trailer at the end of the meet.
COMMUNICATION PATHWAYS
• Please ensure that you provide a valid email as this is the main form of
communication and can keep families up to date with any last minute changes.
• All registered families at Noarlunga LAC have an age group folder, where
newsletters, specific event notifications and certificates will be placed. Chaperones
will check folders each week and hand out relevant information.
• New information is always given verbally at the start of each meet, as well as being
written on the whiteboard. Please ensure you are at the venue on time, as this is an
important way of finding out what is happening at your centre.
• All information will be posted on our website www.noarlungalac.com.au
If you have any concerns please speak with a committee member, who will deal with it
through the appropriate channels.
CHILD SAFETY
• Little Athletics SA is strong in its commitment to a coordinated and comprehensive
approach to promote the protection of children and adults. In accordance with the SA
State Government principals for cild protection and intervention, Little Athletics SA
aims to promote a safe environment for all children and adults and to notify suspected
child abuse and neglect.
Little Athletics SA
SunSmart Policy
The health of members and supporters is of primary concern to Little Athletics SA.
Our Association acknowledges that skin cancer is a major public health problem in Australia,
with two out of every three people requiring treatment for some form of skin cancer in their
lifetime.
We recognise that skin cancer is preventable and we will actively seek to promote, encourage
and support sun protection at meetings, trainings and competitions (local, regional, state and
national).
Where possible, Little Athletics SA will:
• Where hiring conditions permit, schedule activities to avoid some if not all of the
peak ultraviolet period 10am to 2pm (11am to 3pm daylight saving time).
• Ensure all Centre Uniforms have sleeves and where possible, collars.
• Actively encourage members to wear wide brimmed or legionnaire style hats when
not participating in athletic events, as peaked caps do not provide adequate skin
protection.
• Actively encourage members to routinely wear broad spectrum water resistant SPF
30+ sunscreen and stress the importance of regular re-application.
• Provide broad spectrum water resistant SPF 30+ sunscreen for members and make it
available for sale and/or use to athletes and spectators.
• Make maximum use of existing shade at facilities. When shade is not adequate, our
Association will seek to work with relevant authorities and the community to provide
more shade at sporting and recreation facilities; and will endeavour to provide
temporary shade until adequate shade is provided. Individuals will also be encouraged
to bring their own shade structures to events.
• Provide portable shade structures at competitions held away from our home ground.
• Promote sun safety through newsletters, brochures and over the public address system
at competitions.
• Encourage senior athletes, coaches, officials, members in prominent positions and
parents to be SunSmart role models.
• Advise athletes, parents and volunteers about the SunSmart Policy at registration and
encourage them to comply with it.
• Consider the reasons for and appropriateness of any rules that prevent the
implementation of sun protection strategies.
This SunSmart Policy will be reviewed annually to ensure that the document remains current
and practical to the Centres and Clubs requirements.
technique but using modified equipment.

TINY TOTS
During the 2001/2002 season, Noarlunga Little Athletics Centre introduced ‘Tiny Tots’, a
program to assist with all aspects of motor skill development in 3-5 year old children.
The ‘Tiny Tots’ program is based around the fundamental skills of running, jumping &
throwing. Movement skills are incorporated into play & game situations that not only
improve children’s physical abilities, but help them relate to others & have great fun!
Activities include the development of:-
STRENGTH - good muscular strength can enable children to improve their posture & ability
to manipulate objects.
BODY AWARENESS - being aware of how the body moves & works helps children
become more familiar with their capabilities.
BALANCE - one of the most important & essential skills required in controlling the body &
its movements.
CO-ORDINATION - sequencing muscles & nerves to perform a task, practicing movements
through play.
SPATIAL AWARENESS - knowing where they are in relation to other people & objects.
HEALTHY HEART - becoming stronger & fitter as they exercise.
The success of the ‘Tiny Tots’ program at Noarlunga is
reflected in the children enjoying & actively participating in
the activities. This is achieved by the careful planning &
supervision by the parents who organise the program each
week. All parents are encouraged to become actively
involved in the ‘Tiny Tots’ program.
CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A PARENT
TO PARTICIPATE!
Your Tiny Tot Coordinator for Season 2013/14 is Renee Irvine.
19

PARENTAL CODE OF BEHAVIOUR
The Little Athletics SA guidelines are:-
• Encourage children to participate if they are interested. If a child is not
willing, do not force him or her.
• Focus upon the child’s efforts rather than the overall outcome of the
event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to his or her
ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
• Teach the children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that
the result of each event is accepted without undue disappointment.
• Encourage children to always participate according to the rules.
• Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing an event.
• Remember children are involved in Little Athletics for their enjoyment,
not yours.
• If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate
channels rather than questioning the official’s judgement & honesty in
public. Remember, most officials give their time & effort for your child’s
involvement.
• Support all efforts to remove verbal & physical abuse at Little Athletics
activities.
• Recognise the value & importance of being a volunteer official and/or
coach. They give their time and resources to provide recreational
activities for children and deserve your support.
20
• Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour, by not harassing athletes,
coaches or officials, smoking on the arena or being intoxicated.

TAKING THE NEXT STEP!
If you’re a parent and you’ve been involved for a couple of years and would
like to take a further role, here are a couple of things you can do.
1) All parents are invited to become committee members. Don’t worry; you
won’t get over burdened with a huge workload. You can assist in many ways.
There are only a few meetings per season. Ask a current committee member for
more information.
2) Become a ‘C’ grade Official. On October 20th we are holding an Officials
Course. It is run during the programmed events and teaches you all the rules
involved in all the events. You are then given an open book exam to complete
and once passed, you are a qualified official.
Being a sport that is run completely by the parents of the athletes, it is essential
that we continue as parents to strive to ‘be our best’ as well as the athletes. We
can’t do it without your support.
McDonald’s 2014 Cross Country
Cross Country is a great way for athletes to continue their enjoyment of
Little Athletics and keep fit over winter. It’s also a great opportunity to
keep in touch with the friends you made over summer.
Towards the end of the summer season, a program will be available with all
the Cross Country venues. It will also be available on our website once it
has been finalised by the association.
If you have any questions regarding the events, please contact a committee
member.
Good luck and have fun!
*Rules and competition times will be available towards the end of the summer season.
*Note: Please check our website for any updates www.noarlungalac.com.au
