Cambridge Bursary Scheme for New UK Students 2012-13
The University is committed to the principle that no UK student should be deterred from studying
at Cambridge because of financial difficulties, so we offer a generous bursary scheme. All you have
to do is remember to apply by October 19 th , so make it the first thing you do when you arrive!
Some Bursary Facts
•In 2012-13 we believe that around 3,000 UK students will be eligible for a Cambridge Bursary.
That is more than 1 in 4 students
•Every student starting a first undergraduate degree in October 2012, who has an annual
household income of less than £42,600 and who pays a Cambridge University Tuition Fee, will
be eligible for a Cambridge Bursary.
•The maximum bursary this year will be £3,500 (£5,650 for some mature students) and the vast
majority of those students who receive the maximum government maintenance grant will
receive this amount.
•The amount of the bursary is assessed according to the government means testing used to
calculate your maintenance grant - there is a sliding scale of support. This means that in order
to apply for a Cambridge Bursary you must apply for government support, and when doing so
you must give consent to share your financial information with the University.
•The number and amount of bursaries awarded are determined by student need. There is no
ceiling on the number of awards, and you do not deprive others of a bursary by applying.
•Cambridge Bursaries are primarily designed to support students with their living costs while at
Cambridge, However, if you qualify for a Cambridge Bursary of £2,000 or more you can choose
instead to use it to reduce your tuition fees (up to a maximum of £3,000).
If you have not received a grant but think you may be entitled to one, or if you are waiting for a financial
reassessment, do not wait for the result before applying. Once we have your details we will be able to check
Before you Apply
• Make sure you know your Cambridge University email address and password. You will need
this both so that we can identify you correctly within the University and so that you can
collect the confirmation email we will send you.
• Make sure you have details of any other income you expect to receive during the coming
academic year
• Make a note of your SLC Student Support Number or SSN (known to Scottish students as SLC
Ref No.) This can be found on your Student Finance paperwork (just under the barcode on
the page headed ‘University or College Payment Advice’), or online via your Student Finance
Account; you should also be able to access it once you have arrived via your CamSIS selfservice
page. We need this to identify your household information data correctly with SLC.
• Make sure you and your parents/sponsors have given to SLC consent to share household
financial information with the University. If not you should phone them to give consent on the
helpline number: 0845 603 4016
Application Form
• Go to www.cam.ac.uk/cambridgebursary and fill in the simple electronic application form.
This will be available as soon as you arrive in Cambridge in October, and it will be available
until 4pm on Friday October 19th.
Completing your Application
• Once you have filled in the form and pressed ‘submit’ you will receive a confirmation email
containing important information. Attached to it will be a record of the answers you gave on
the form, with a declaration for you to sign.
• Print this out, read it carefully and sign the declaration. If you do not have a printer, your
College will also have a copy of the confirmation email, and they should be able to print it for
you.
• Take the signed declaration to the appropriate person in your College (details below)
Deadline
• You must complete the online application by 4pm on Friday 19 th October to enable us to calculate
your Cambridge Bursary before Christmas. This is a fixed deadline; after this date the application
form will be removed. Requests for late applications may be accepted, but payment is likely to be
delayed until March 2013.
•Note: Some students may wish to convert some of their Cambridge Bursary into a tuition fee reduction. This
means that you will get less money to live on now, but your tuition fee loan repayments may be reduced later in
life. You should consider carefully whether this is right for you. If so you must apply by an earlier deadline of
5th October and tick a special box on the online application form. Within a few days, your College will contact
you to tell you your total bursary amount and to arrange for your chosen portion of it to go to reduce your
tuition fee.
