Downtown Riverside<br />
hosts Dickens Festival<br />
On Friday, February 6, a gala costume<br />
ball will open the 16th annual<br />
Riverside Dickens Festival which<br />
will take place February 7 and 8.<br />
Downtown Riverside comes alive with Dickens<br />
characters, entertainers, a London Marketplace,<br />
plays, teas, fashion shows, historic re-enactments<br />
and children’s crafts and games.<br />
The Riverside Dickens Festival is a non-profit,<br />
education organization which raises funds to produce<br />
this cultural arts festival. It is sponsored in<br />
part by the City of Riverside, Target, Riverside<br />
Arts Council. and Riverside County Supervisors<br />
John Tavaglione and Bob Buster. Hundreds of<br />
volunteers help to make the event possible. The<br />
Festival was voted #1 2007 favorite Riverside<br />
event by The Press-Enterprise Readers.<br />
Special events include Pub Night Supper and<br />
Music Hall, Mr. Fezziwig’s Victorian Ball, English<br />
Evensong Choral Concert and the 19th Century<br />
Costume Fashions Shows.<br />
Paul Jacques, local actor, writer and director<br />
will act as Charles Dickens in “Meet Mr.<br />
Dickens.” Watch him in two one-act adaptations<br />
of Dickens’s works with daily performances.<br />
The outdoor stage in downtown will feature<br />
singers, dancers, music and jugglers while “Queen<br />
Victoria” and Her Royal Court preside in her<br />
pavilion. Victorian teas with music hall entertainment<br />
will be served both days with three “Tea<br />
with The Queen” events.<br />
The Gordon Highlanders will march featuring<br />
pipes, drum and daily demonstrations of the<br />
1874 Gatling gun. There will be historic re-enactment<br />
and educational groups on the Library<br />
lawn.<br />
A special English Evensong concert sung by<br />
the Raincross Chorale will be held on Saturday<br />
evening.<br />
All venues and the London Marketplace are<br />
found on Mission Inn Avenue with the street<br />
closed to though traffic.<br />
Interactive environments will include the<br />
League of extraordinary Victorians, No idle<br />
Hands Ladies Handiwork Group, American Civil<br />
War Ladies Society and an International Printing<br />
Museum’s 19th century printing press demonstration.<br />
Entertaining small children in “Oliver’s<br />
Alley” area volunteers will play games, help with<br />
crafts and take photos of children in costume.<br />
