DIGIDIM for DALI<br />

<strong>Helvar</strong>’s DIGIDIM range gives you the products to fulfill any<br />

lighting control requirement. When using the PIR movement<br />

and Constant Light DIGIDIM can achieve maximum energy<br />

saving, prolonged lamp life and reduced cost of ownership.<br />

DIGIDIM Router<br />

DIGIDIM 905 / 910 Router system uses standard Ethernet<br />

communication to integrate DALI networks. Its modularity<br />

allows the user to design scalable systems, from a single<br />

office room to a large office building.<br />

Basic functionality is available “out-of-box” without any<br />

programming. Advanced functionality is programmed<br />

through <strong>Helvar</strong>’s Designer software. Each individual router<br />

can operate two DALI subnets containing a total of 128 control<br />

devices and load interfaces. The system enables energy<br />

saving via a combination of presence detection and constant<br />

light functionality. Further automation is achieved through<br />

scheduled time events. OPC server software and Ethernet I/O<br />

commands enable interfacing to third party systems such as<br />

Building Management Systems (BMS).<br />

DIGIDIM ROUTER SYSTEM FOR DALI<br />

For larger applications <strong>Helvar</strong> routers provide an extension to increase the<br />

number of DALI subnets. Each router provides two powered DALI subnets<br />

supporting up to 128 DALI devices per router. Multiple routers can be<br />

networked together using standard Ethernet switches to accommodate for<br />

large network solutions. Ethernet provides a high speed system backbone<br />

through which the entire system can be monitored and controlled.<br />

The Imagine 920 Router is a modular building<br />

block that allows scalable designs, from small to<br />

Place the blanking plate on the chassis.<br />

The DIGIDIM 416S (16 Amp) and 425S (25 Amp) are<br />

wall-mounted single-channel leading edge (thyristor)<br />

dimmers. Both units also include a 16 A relay circuit.<br />

Controllable by S-DIM, DMX, and Analogue, and fully<br />

a customer specified occupancy sensor to a DIGIDIM-DALI<br />

<strong>Helvar</strong> Designer is a Microsoft® compatible software suite. It<br />

provides an intuitive tool for engineers to design, commission<br />

and program both <strong>Helvar</strong> 905, 910 & 920 router systems.<br />

<strong>Helvar</strong>’s ongoing software and hardware development<br />

ensures that all system components are compatible and<br />

perform reliably.<br />

DESIGN<br />

With Designer it is possible to create off-line designs from<br />

the office, or program on-line to create or fine tune the<br />

lighting system design. Three levels of password protection<br />

are available to secure the system data. Scene data can be<br />

transferred to and from other Microsoft® packages such as<br />

Excel.<br />

COMMISSIONING<br />

An important function of Designer software is the<br />

commissioning of <strong>Helvar</strong> system devices. This is typically a<br />

one-off exercise done upon completion of the physical device<br />

installation. During this first stage, all system devices are<br />

identified, tested, named and grouped.<br />

During this stage the intelligence of the system devices is programmed.<br />

The programmed functionality is determined by the demands of the<br />

interactive control and data exchange between <strong>Helvar</strong> router systems<br />

and external host systems such as an HVAC (OPC client).<br />

• The Ethernet I/O module offers a tool for direct router system access.<br />

Ethernet commands (either TCP or UDP) can be used to control and<br />

monitor the router system. Alternatively, a <strong>Helvar</strong> router can send<br />

Ethernet commands to external Ethernet enabled devices. Applications<br />

include direct PC access to <strong>Helvar</strong>’s system for custom front-end<br />

software solutions; Panel PC for intuitive user interfacing and control<br />

of e.g. Ethernet enabled Audio/Video gateway. For more information on<br />

TOUCHSTUDIO SOFTWARE<br />

TouchStudio allows an Ethernet enabled Windows® PC or<br />

XP-based panel PC to easily access <strong>Helvar</strong> router systems<br />

(905 / 910 / 920). Customized graphical user interfaces can<br />

be created with <strong>Helvar</strong> TouchStudio Editor (free), and these<br />

can then be used with <strong>Helvar</strong> TouchStudio Runtime (licensed)<br />

to provide intuitive control and monitoring of a <strong>Helvar</strong> lighting<br />

system.<br />

Applications include easy facility-manager access in<br />

museums, meeting rooms, hotel reception desks and<br />

shopping malls. In office applications, a small graphical<br />

application can run on the employees’ PCs, putting them in<br />

control of their personal lighting and avoiding the need for<br />

hardware panels and cabling.<br />

The TouchStudio software provides the programmer with a<br />

library of graphical components to choose from, to assist<br />

creating simple and user-friendly Touch Panel designs.<br />

Examples include buttons, sliders, text fields, passwords<br />

and backgrounds. Editing is done via familiar “drag & drop”<br />

functionality. And project designs can be saved and opened<br />

at a later stage to make changes or enhancements to the<br />

design.<br />

WORKFLOW<br />

The TouchStudio Editor produces a project folder that can be uploaded to 3rd party Windows based PC peripherals. The<br />

TouchStudio Runtime application ensures the execution of the graphical project folder on the physical device. Included in<br />

DALI ELECTRONIC BALLASTS<br />

EL-iDim / EL-iDim-c DALI ballasts are designed for a<br />

broad range of applications from the smallest intelligent<br />

luminaires to major lighting installations in large building<br />

complexes. What’s more, they offer the important advantage<br />

of enabling everything to be achieved with the same ballasts.<br />

EL-iDim / EL-iDim-c DALI ballasts are also fully compatible<br />

with <strong>Helvar</strong> iDim sensors, the combination creating the latest<br />

high-tech innovation available to the lighting market. With<br />

out-of-box functionality, the <strong>Helvar</strong> system is moreover, easy<br />

to install and use, and maintenance costs are always kept to<br />

a minimum.<br />

In the design of EL-iDim / EL-iDim-c, customer input played a<br />

crucial role – leading to superior features such as:<br />

• OCC technology, guaranteeing the highest possible EEI<br />

= A1 BAT<br />

• Remarkable low stand-by power<br />

• Smooth and stepless dimming from 100 % to 1 %<br />

• Multi-lamp operation, allowing one ballast to drive all<br />

HE-T5 lamps<br />

• Multi-lamp operation between several compact lamps<br />

• EL-iDim-c ballast are suitable for use both in single and<br />

twin lamp operation<br />

• The ballasts also have an in-built data register capable<br />

of storing information on running hours, energy consumption,<br />

mains voltage, lamp voltage etc. This can<br />

be very useful in large installations where the lighting<br />

management and maintenance is centralized in one<br />

monitoring room.<br />

OCC TM - OPTIMUM CATHODE CONTROL<br />

The proven OCC TM - Optimum Cathode Control<br />

technology is used in <strong>Helvar</strong> EL-s, EL-sc, EL-iDim and<br />

EL- TCs electronic ballast ranges.<br />

OCC TM ensures that the electrical parameters supplied to<br />

the lamp are always optimum, minimising system losses<br />

and maximising lamp lifetime. The achieved energy<br />

saving is considerable compared to existing ballasts on<br />

the market.<br />

Installation notes<br />

When Designing, Specifying and Installing a <strong>Helvar</strong> lighting control system always refer to latest technical information<br />

(Installation guides, User and configuration manuals) found from the product packagings and online from www.helvar.com.<br />

Cable Requirements<br />

• DALI connections of up to 300 m can be made with any 2 wire 0.5 - 1.5 mm 2 mains rated cable<br />

• The DIGIDIM panels must be earthed as shown in the installation instructions<br />

• In rare instances where the environment may be electrically noisy, due to adjacent circuits carrying high switching currents,<br />

we recommend a 2 wire twisted pair screened and sheathed cable.<br />

• DALI cable must be mains-rated and the maximum voltage drop along the length of the cable must not exceed 2V.<br />
