Fun Time for 4s and 5s:
I Like to Eat Apples and Bananas
Share nursery rhymes or other rhymes so the child will learn to hear and play with
“same” and “different” sounds in words.
Singing is the most natural way to hear the smaller sounds in words since each sound is
usually sung on a different musical note.
Share books that rhyme or can be sung. Read slowly, clearly, and enthusiastically.
Play with words and sounds.
o Leave a pause before saying the rhyming word in order to let the child think and
respond. Point to objects or pictures as clues.
o Clap on each syllable (or part) of a word or just on the words that rhyme.
o Talk and say words in different ways. (How would a giant or a mouse say a word?)
After storytime, a librarian will be available to help you find library materials as well as
answer questions about the
”Ready to Read” program and “To-Go” Kits.
“Apples and Bananas” from Fabulous Food
“A House with No Doors, No Windows, but a Star Inside” 1
Chorus: (Sing to: “The Farmer in the Dell”)
A-hunting we will go … A-hunting we will go
Heigh-ho the derry-o … A-hunting we will go
1 This is Hayley McEwing’s adaptation of the anonymous tale of “The Little Red House with No Doors and No
Windows and a Star Inside.”

Extension Activity –> Craft/Art:
Now that we have shared stories and rhymes about apples and bananas and seen the star
inside of an apple, I will give you each a sheet of paper. Draw the inside of an apple. If
you want, use one star sticker. When you’re done, tell me about your picture!
