Top-flight European football continues on ESPN: 

the UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals and 

Semifinals 

European football‟s most prestigious club competition, the UEFA Champions League, continues 

on ESPN in April with coverage of Quarterfinal and Semifinal matches. Defending champions 

Barcelona of Spain, the clear-cut favorites, are out to become the first side to lift the trophy two 

years running since Italy‟s AC Milan accomplished the feat in 1989 & 1990. At the same time, their 

domestic league rivals, Real Madrid, are banking on inspired play from Portuguese star Cristiano 

Ronaldo to keep them in the hunt. 

The First Knockout Round was marked by some grand duels between England and Italy, as Jose 

Mourniho led his sharp Inter Milan side against his former club, Chelsea, while AC Milan took on 

last year‟s runner-up to Barcelona, Manchester United. With midfield talent David Beckham lined 

up with AC Milan against his former Manchester teammates, the round was a spicy one. Other top 

matchups featured England‟s Arsenal facing Portugal‟s FC Porto, and Germany‟s Bayern 

München taking on Italy‟s Fiorentina.

wrapping the regular season with some key matchups and setting the stage for the NBA Playoffs 

beginning on April 18. Doubleheader action on the 3 rd spotlights favorites from both the

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE 

The UEFA Europa League continues in April on ESPN: 

the Quarterfinals and Semifinals 

The UEFA Europa League, European football‟s second-tier club competition, continues on ESPN 

in April with coverage of the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. The holders, Ukraine‟s Shaktar 

Donetsk, is aiming to follow their UEFA Cup victory last year by taking the inaugural UEFA Europa 

League crown. The side they beat in Istanbul, Germany‟s Werder Bremen, is also a solid favorite, 

joined by Austria‟s FC Salzburg, the only side to finish the Group Stage with a 100% record, and 

Hamburger SV, pushing to be on the field for the Final at their home stadium, Hamburg Arena. 

Among the eight sides transferring from the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 32 were 

England‟s Liverpool, the giant killers from Russia, Rubin Kazan, and Italy‟s Juventus, who in one 

of the best matches of that round took on famed Dutch club Ajax. Other matchups saw Italy‟s AS 

Roma facing Greece‟s Panathinaikos, England‟s Fulham taking on Shaktar Donetsk, Hamburger 

taking on another Dutch giant, PSV Eindhoven, and Australian midfielder Tim Cahill and 

England‟s Everton taking the field against Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Top-flight football from Italy on ESPN – the Italian Serie A continues 

With all the drama and passion of the country‟s other great obsession – the opera – Italian Serie 

A football continues all month on ESPN. Italy‟s league title, the „scudetto,‟ seems to be solidly 

anchored in its home of the last four seasons, with Inter Milan. The club‟s strike duo of Argentina‟s 

Diego Milito and Cameroon‟s Samuel Eto‟o have been in stellar form, joining Udinese‟s Antonio di 

Natale, AS Roma‟s Francesco Totti and Fiorentina‟s Alberto Gilardino as the leading scorers 

through the first half of the season. 

Inter‟s two closest competitors, AC Milan and Juventus, have looked good, just not good enough, 

thus far, to catch the leaders. The return of David Beckham to AC Milan in January, on loan from 

MLS‟s Los Angeles Galaxy, has given them a high-quality, tactical player to line up with forwards 

Marco Borriello and Brazilian talent Pato, while Juventus, even when playing below their best, is 

always a threat for the title.

SPANISH PRIMERA LEAGUE 

The elite Spanish Primera League continues all month on ESPN 

The Spanish Primera League continues its reign as one of the recognized powers in world 

football. And when it comes to the leading powers at the club level, 2009 was clearly Barcelona‟s 

year. The side made history by claiming six titles – the domestic treble of the League, Copa del 

Rey and Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup finals, and to 

top things off, a victory at the FIFA Club World Cup final in December. 

Barça‟s Argentine talent Leo Messi enjoyed a banner year as well, claiming the Ballon d‟Or as 

European Footballer of the Year and top prize as FIFA‟s World Player of the Year, too. For both 

awards, Messi was followed in the voting by Real Madrid‟s Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo 

and Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernández. Among the other players voted the best of the year by 

FIFA were three more who ply their trade in Spain: Real Madrid‟s Spanish goalkeeper Iker 

Casillas and two more from Barcelona, Brazilian defender Daniel Alves and Spanish midfielder 

Andrés Iniesta.

MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER (MLS) 

Major League Soccer is back – season coverage airs LIVE on ESPN 

Major League Soccer (MLS), the top professional soccer league in the United States, is back this 

month, kicking off a full season of coverage on ESPN. Last season was stellar, as Real Salt Lake 

(RSL) capped an unlikely run by winning MLS Cup ‟09, edging the Los Angeles Galaxy on penalty 

kicks, 5-4. The championship is the first for RSL, which became only the third team to make the

MLS title game after qualifying for the playoffs as the lowest seed. 

The Galaxy, meanwhile, were in their fifth MLS Cup, having won the title in 2002 and 2005. 

Behind England‟s David Beckham and league MVP Landon Donovan, the Galaxy were heavily 

favored in the final, but couldn‟t hold off the determined RSL players. In addition to RSL and the 

Galaxy, other favorites in the new season include last year‟s conference finalists, the Chicago Fire

Back in April is the leading European club competition in rugby union, the Heineken Cup, 

continuing LIVE on ESPN with coverage from the Quarterfinals. Spotlighting the strongest teams 

from the Six Nations – England, France, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Italy – this electrifying 

tournament is one of the most respected and closely-watched in world rugby. 

In the earlier rounds, defending champions Leinster of Ireland and London Irish waged a spirited 

battle for dominance of Pool 6, as did three-time champions Toulouse versus Sale Sharks in Pool 

5 and Ireland‟s Munster, who claimed the title in 2006 and 2008, with Northampton Saints in Pool 

1. Pool 2 was all about Biarritz Olympique Pays Basque, while Ospreys made things complicated

Europe‟s premier basketball league, Euroleague Basketball, continues all month on ESPN, 

spotlighting the best teams from Spain, Italy, Greece, Russia and Israel, to name a few of the 

countries lighting up the court. Featured this month are closing games from the Quarterfinal 

Playoffs, a best-of-five series between first- and second-placed finishers from the Top 16. The 

four series winners advance to the Final Four in May. 

As of early January, Spain‟s Regal FC Barcelona had notched a 9-0 season and was the only 

undefeated team in the regular season. They easily advanced to the Top 16, joined by Group A

The IZOD IndyCar Series continues on ESPN in April 

with race action from Alabama and California 

April has more open wheel race action from the IZOD IndyCar Series with LIVE coverage on 

ESPN of the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Alabama and the popular Grand Prix of Long Beach. 

The 2.38-mile road course at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama is certain to favor the road 

course experts in the field, among them last season‟s three top Series finishers: defending 

champion Dario Franchitti of Scotland, New Zealand‟s Scott Dixon and Australia‟s Ryan Briscoe. 

Next up is the Streets of Long Beach, a nearly 2-mile street course won last year by Franchitti in 

only his second race back in IndyCar following a stint in NASCAR. Following him across the finish 

line were young Australian driver Will Power and Brazil‟s Tony Kanaan. Joining Franchitti, Dixon 

and Briscoe as favorites in the new season are Kanaan and fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves, 

top female driver Danica Patrick, and two U.S. talents of purebred racing lineage, Graham Rahal

NHRA Drag Racing screams into April with continuing coverage on ESPN 

Continuing this month on ESPN is more supercharged action from NHRA Drag Racing. At heart, 

drag racing is merely an acceleration contest, but what acceleration. Top Fuel dragsters, often 

referred to as the “kings of the sport,” can cover a quarter-mile in 4.4 seconds at more than 330 

mph, while the Funny Cars routinely run in the 4.7-second range and are capable hitting the same 

speeds as the Top Fuel dragsters. 

Race action this month airs from Houston and Las Vegas, two stops where Top Fuel star Tony 

Schumacher ruled last season, winning both races on his way to claiming a sixth consecutive title. 

In Funny Car, Houston saw Ashley Force Hood come out on top, while Ron Capps was the victor

in Las Vegas. All are back in top form in the new season and ready to again challenge for their 

respective titles, the two most important in drag racing.

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship continues on ESPN in 

April, delivering big thrills from the premier off-road motorcycle racing series on the planet. The 

17-race season travels this month to four leading tracks in the United States: Jacksonville, Florida; 

Houston, Texas; St. Louis, Missouri; and Seattle, Washington. 

Defending champion James Stewart is on a quest to claim his third career championship, but to 

do that must hold off not only archrival Chad Reed – the Australian talent who won this series in 

2004 & 2008 and chased Stewart all the way to the season finale in Las Vegas last year before 

losing the title by four points – but also a group of up-and-coming riders who are out to steal his 

crown, among them Ryan Villopoto, Josh Grant and Ryan Dungey.

Get ready for the opening pitch as MLB opens a new season on ESPN 

Major League Baseball (MLB) opens a new season on ESPN this month, and it opens with a 

bang with one of the biggest rivalries in the sport as the Boston Red Sox host their historic 

Eastern Division rival, the defending champion New York Yankees. The Yankees captured an 

historic 27 th title in 2009, the most in MLB history but their first since 2000, by humbling the 

defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in Games 6 of the World Series. Expect both the Sox

and Yankees to look sharp in the American League (AL), joined by last year‟s other Division 

Series contenders, the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels. 

In the National League (NL), the Philadelphia Phillies – hot off claiming two consecutive NL 

pennants – head a tough group of challengers led by the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis 

Cardinals. In addition to the Red Sox vs. the Yankees, April features the Cardinals – home to 

three-time MVP Albert Pujols – in action against the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers; the 

New York Mets, looking to bounce back from last season‟s meltdown, taking on the Cards and 

Atlanta Braves; and the Braves hosting the perennial also-rans, the Chicago Cubs.

ACTION SPORTS – Winter X Games Europe 

Action Sports grab the spotlight in April as 

the ESPN Winter X Games travels to Europe 

Airing on ESPN this month is coverage from the inaugural Winter X Games Europe, the first 

Winter X Games event to be held outside of the United States. The world‟s top winter action 

sports athletes are invited to show their stuff in Tignes, one of the most cosmopolitan resorts in 

Europe, located in the gorgeous Northern French Alps. Athletes compete for medals and prize 

money over three days in eight different competitions including Ski and Snowboard SuperPipe 

and Slopestyle for both men and women, as well as a Snowmobile demonstration.

Among the athletes invited to France are some of the biggest names in winter action sports: 

Australia‟s Torah Bright, two-time Winter X Games Snowboard SuperPipe gold medal winner and 

2006 Winter Olympian; Simon Dumont, two-time Winter X Games Skiing SuperPipe gold medal 

winner; and Levi LaVallee, three-time Winter X Games Snowmobile gold medalist. 

Coverage of Winter X Games Europe is featured on ESPN this month with four one-hour 

programs plus a one hour highlight show. Dates and times TBD. 

SPORTSCENTER 

ESPN‟s marquee sports news and information program, SportsCenter, continues Monday to 

Friday at 6:30pm (AUS). Innovative and entertaining, SportsCenter covers major sporting events 

and stories of special interest to sports fans in Australia and New Zealand, as well as a broad 

range of international sports that appeal to local viewers. 

As with ESPN‟s flagship studio show launched in 1979, this version of SportsCenter – hosted by 

Andrew Orsatti and Jason Bennett – has in-depth reporting and analysis, vast coverage, and a 

creative and sophisticated production style that is the mark of SportsCenter wherever it is seen 

around the globe. 

POKER 

ESPN’s Poker Night continues 

on Sunday and Tuesday evenings 

ESPN’s Poker Night, featured every Sunday and Tuesday evening, spotlights skilled 

international card sharps as they ply their trade at leading events around the globe. From the 

prestigious World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas to the U.S. Poker Championship, the 

World Series of Poker–Europe and other major international events, ESPN‟s Poker Night delivers 

all the high-stakes action that poker fans crave. 

The 2009 World Series of Poker (WSOP), the marquee event in world poker, continues re-airing 

this month on ESPN with action from the Main Event, 13 days of World Championship No-Limit 

Texas Hold’em that delivered the players for the Final Table. While seven-time gold bracelet 

winner Phil Ivey, widely considered one of the world‟s best poker players, earned his place at the 

final table, in the end it was a 21-year-old Michigan poker player, Joe Cada, waltzing off with the 

$8.55 million top prize while becoming the youngest player to win the tournament in its 40-year 

history. 

Don‟t miss a hand with ESPN‟s Poker Night airing Sunday evenings from 10:00pm-12:00am with 

re-airs on Tuesday nights at 8:00pm.

cricketers. Voted on by a distinguished panel of international journalists, historians and cricket 

experts, The Legends spotlights cricket‟s most skilled and unforgettable players. 

Using interviews, film & television reports and historical photo collections, this unique series brings 

these fascinating men fully to life. This month features Pakistan‟s Wasim Akram, England‟s Sir 

Leonard Hutton, West Indies‟ talents Sir Frank Worrell and George Headley, and Greg Chappell, 

a former Australia captain considered the pre-eminent Australian batsman of his time. Programs 

air Wednesdays at 7:30pm.

BOXING 

Step in the ring with ESPN and Friday Night Fights 

Friday Night Fights, ESPN‟s weekly program featuring live championship bouts, continues all 

month, giving boxing fans a mainline dose of their favorite sport. In addition to fight coverage 

spotlighting the sport‟s top-rated contenders, Friday Night Fights has news and information, chats 

with in-studio guests, and features clips of classic fight footage. Friday Night Fights airs Friday 

evenings.
