pay for their NYSCA certificates. These will be paid at camp only as long as all receipts have
been turned into the Vice President.
4.4 Coaching The Squad
Practice Space: Each head coach needs to find a location to hold her squad’s practices once
the school year begins. Cheerleading squads typically practice in the gymnasium or cafeteria
of a Centerville elementary or middle school. Space is limited. You must contact the principal
of the school to see if your practice times will be available. A building use agreement form
(available in the prospective school office) must be completed and signed by the head coach
and the school principal. This form is then forwarded to the Centerville Board of Education for
final approval. An approval or rejection letter is normally mailed back in a couple of weeks.
Hint: If you have a specific school where you would like to hold your practices, submit your
request prior to the end of the school year in June!
Resources and Squad Supplies:
Head coaches are usually assigned older cheerleaders to help them instruct cheers,
chants, and a dance. Once school begins, these helpers often become committed to
other activities. Try to get some kind of commitment from your helper/helpers early.
All head coaches need to supply their own portable CD player for practices.
Each squad receives a fully equipped first-aid box. Although it is helpful, coaches do
not need to be CPR certified.
Pom poms will be provided to each squad. Poms are to be collected from the
cheerleaders at the conclusion of each event and remain with the Cheer Coaching
Team throughout the season.
Signs /props are optional and will need to be developed by each squad
Coach’s Shirts: Each coach, assistant coach, and team mom will receive a coach’s shirt from
the Wee Elk Association. We will have order forms and sample shirts at the Uniform / Shoe
Fitting conducted between May 21 st and May 23 rd , 2013. You may purchase additional
coach’s shirts, which must be paid for at time of order.
4.5 Team Moms
The primary job of a team mom is to assist the coaches in whatever way possible. A coach’s
job can be demanding and the team mom can help with “behind the scenes” work. Some
coaches prefer to do a lot of the work themselves. Other coaches will welcome all help. It is up
to the Cheer Coaching Team (coaches and team moms) to determine a plan that best fits the
needs of the squad. Communication is the key.
Team moms typically assist with typing newsletters, collecting money for squad expenses,
assisting with social activities, coordinating the squad banquet, reminding parents when it’s
their time to work at Schoolhouse Park, pickup trophies, etc.
There will be a Team Mom meeting prior to the season. To find out if team mom positions are
available, please contact the Cheer VP, Lori Dunnigan 937-232-8916.
