A repurchase agreement (i.e., a “repo”) that Lehman<br />

accounted <strong>for</strong> as a sale <strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> a f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g, which<br />

removed the assets from Lehman’s balance sheet. In a<br />

second step, Lehman used the cash obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> exchange<br />

<strong>for</strong> the assets to pay down other liabilities. The Repo 105<br />

transactions reduced the size <strong>of</strong> Lehman’s balance sheet<br />

<strong>and</strong> reduced its net leverage ratio. The transactions were<br />

called Repo 105 because Lehman provided 5%<br />

overcollateralization.<br />
