Boorito!
For Halloween 2012 Chipotle (a fast-‐casual Mexican restaurant chain) is offering $2 burritos
to any customer that comes in dressed in their Halloween costume after 4 p.m. Even better,
Chipotle will donate up to one million dollars of the proceeds from the $2 items to the
Chipotle Cultivate Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to creating a sustainable,
healthful, equitable food future.
I wonder how likely it is that Chipotle will be able raise one million dollars in one evening?
Take a couple minutes, first individually and then with a partner to think about what
information would be helpful to figure this out. Record your thoughts below:
Boorito Continued….
1. At $2 a burrito, how many burritos need to be sold to reach one million dollars?
2. After doing some research I found out that there are about 1,200 Chipotle locations.
How many $2 items would each location need to sell to reach one million dollars in
sales?
3. From my research I can see that most Chipotles are open until 10 pm. How many $2
items must be sold per hour at each location to reach one million dollars in sales?
4. An estimated 2 out of 5 Americans (there are about 300 million Americans) are
expected to wear costumes this year. According to Wikipedia, Chipotle has about
750,000 customers per day on average. Do you think it seems reasonable that Chipotle
will be able to sell enough $2 burritos to customers in costumes to reach the one
million dollar mark? Be sure to explain your reasoning.
5. Burritos at Chipotle normally cost about $6.50 (this varies a bit based on the
ingredients). How much money in burrito sales is Chipotle potentially giving up by
running this promotion and charity event?
