In 1937, the door opened on a bold experiment in Jewish learning. Rabbi Dr. Joseph
Soloveitchik, l Z vf, founded Maimonides School to engage the hearts and teach the
minds of Jewish children. Its ambitious dual curriculum would pair proficiency in
Torah education with excellence in general studies, preparing students to contribute
to the modern world while invigorating their attachment to Judaism and a halachic
way of life. Its atmosphere would inspire boys and girls equally to a love of learning,
mitzvot, chesed, Am Yisrael, and Eretz Yisrael.
From its first class of six students, this vision has blossomed into an energetic
educational center of almost 600 students, learning together in Kindergarten
through Grade 12. Students from Greater Boston and beyond, and from a wide range
of religious backgrounds, are welcomed into a school community by teachers who
reach out to motivate and educate.
Student life begins with a full academic schedule and continues beyond the
classroom with stimulating clubs, sports and activities. Chesed and tzedakah efforts
are part of daily life, demonstrating students’ compassionate awareness of their
relationship to the wider world and their willingness to take action. Indeed, the
values fostered by this school community endure; Maimonides graduates have earned
an enviable reputation for leadership and accomplishment in every field of human
endeavor. For over six decades, they have brought the Rav’s vision to life—Torah life,
and contemporary life.
Maimonides students are at home with intensive study, academic achievement and
schedules brimming with activity. More important, Maimonides students are at home
with halachic life, indelibly connected to Judaism, and dedicated to perpetuating the
sacred tradition. From the youngest to those on the eve of graduation, these are lives
shaped by head and heart, intellect and love. They are both outstanding students and
extraordinary people. We invite you to discover for yourself this unique treasure of
Jewish education in Boston, and share it with your children.
