Cowboy Builders
With reference to the letter in the May issue
about cowboy builders: I think that the writers will
be lucky to get anything from the people to whom
they refer.
The 10,000€ plus 1,000€ costs is about the maximum
that the courts can award, but the whole
affair is a toothless tiger: if the alleged cowboy
builder appeals to the court in Rennes, then the
injured party has to pay the costs of the appeal
before it proceeds.
The facts of the case are immaterial; the only
people who make money are the lawyers and
the bailiffs. If the builder chooses to contest the
case he will in all probability receive legal aid, but
because it is viewed as a private rather than a
criminal case, neither the Police, the procurator
fiscal nor the British Embassy will help with the
prosecution. It is just throwing good money after
bad: they should just be satisfied that the original
verdict was in their favour - because that is all
they will get.
They should have sued the surveyors or the fire
insurance people if they didn't pay up: but based
on the letter and my own experience they won't
get any money.
Kind regards Cavin Shakesheave.
Our Shopping Trip
Having just got back from a 'shopping' trip to Plymouth, we felt
we must tell readers about the hotel where we stayed: the Drake
Hotel. What a find (we found it on trip advisor), the price of the
room, which included off-road parking (a rare thing in Plymouth)
and breakfast - anything from fruit, cereal, kippers to full English
– was £66.50 for a double room. The owners Gus & Nicki were
so helpful, and pointed us in the right direction for Tesco, Asda,
B&Q etc etc. We also found Primark & Matalan.
Gus and Nicki also kindly froze our freezer blocks and we were
therefore able to do a last minute 'cold shop' at Sainsburys, 5
mins from the ferry port. The hotel is well situated for the ferry
port, and it was not a problem for Nicki to E-mail us directions,
it was 5 minutes from the port to the hotel. Of an evening we
took a stroll round the corner to Plymouth Hoe and walked to
the Barbican area.
We took advantage of cheap ferry crossings leaving early
Wednesday morning and returning on the Friday midday boat,
so back in the Callac area at a reasonable time. Lots of bargains
to be had, so a great time spent on our shopping trip.
If you need a hotel for a stop over, or just to break the journey,
we fully reccomend Drake Hotel Plymouth.
Brittany Bring and Buy
I have set up a new group on Yahoo called Brittany Bring and
Buy, which is for people in Brittany to sell and buy things they
no longer need. To join me on 'bbab' send an e-mail to BBABsubscribe@yahoogroups.co.uk.
(To contact the group owner
send an e-mail to BBAB-owner@yahoogroups.co.uk).
You can buy and sell anything you want on the group, but for anything
really out of the ordinary contact me first. This could also
be a very good way for people in Brittany to meet one another.
I look forward to seeing you on the group.
Where did that Personal Section Go?
I have always been pleased to see the personal section in the
Central Brittany Journal – it is nice to know that some of us have
the strength of character to enter this section – and was disappointed
by its absence in the May issue..
There are many of us who find ourselves in this beautiful countryside
without that contact that should be related to a "close
friend' or "friend". So let's make sure that the personal section
remains open – my entry this month is 'tough tree hugger, heart
of gold'.
Garden Visits
I would like to contact anybody who may be interested in
opening their garden once or twice a year to like-minded
gardeners, or others, in Brittany. Your garden doesn't
need to be pristine or particularly original since the idea
is to spend a pleasant afternoon in the company of
other gardeners, to exchange ideas, and perhaps make
new friends. If you are interested please contact Pete
Coomber either by phone 02 98 93 08 37 or by e-mail
coomber@orange.fr
The main concern at the moment is to determine the
amount of interest. Obviously, the more the merrier. I will
need your name address, telephone number and e-mail
address (if available)
Once I have sufficient numbers I will contact those interested,
to make a start.
AngloInfo Brittany Forum
A month or two ago, having been an irregular user of
Angloinfo Brittany forum for quite a few years under the
same login name, I was surprised to find some of my
postings deleted by the site's administration.
On my initial enquiry as to why these postings had been
removed, as I had no suspicion nor information that led
me to believe they could have possibly infringed the
rather extensive 'conditions' that appear on the site, I received
no reply. I waited three weeks before writing again
and not only again received no reply but had my account
abruptly closed (this is, remember, an account I had held
for several years with no incident to date). I had mentioned
in my reply that I found it impolite not to reply to a
user's request for information and that I did not consider
it in the site's best interest (commercial or otherwise).
Subsequently, my interest now aroused, not to mention
my irk, I have re-registered under several different
names and already had many postings and one or two
other accounts arbitrarily deleted.
I find it particularly disturbing that a site that has such
potential and appeal, particularly to those of us in Central
Brittany, is a mere shadow of what it could be and is quite
likely pandering to the lowest common denominator: unbiased
or useful advice is being limited for reasons quite
impossible to appreciate.
Angloinfo is the most successful of all the many Angloinfo
international sites (and of all the forums on French/
Breton living) as well as being of particular importance
as a social network to those of us in Central Brittany, new
here, old here (and getting older), living or visiting the
area or those wanting to know about life here.
Access to what is indisputably a beneficial public forum,
where freedom should and can be permitted to a far
greater degree than is presently possible, is clearly an
important issue.
I welcome any comments, suggestions, input, and initially
would like to pool other people's experience and put
some heads together.
Wind Turbines
In Computer-Land there is an expression (American,
of course): FUD, which means Fear, Uncertainty and
Doubt. This refers to the spreading of disinformation in
the hope of creating Doubt and Uncertainty, leading to
Fear by which the masses can be controlled, rather like
sheep. Perhaps the acronym should be DUF.
Anyway, the contribution about wind farms tends to fall
into this category: "this beautiful area with its Roman
acqueduct" evokes an idea of the Pont du Gard, which
it isn't because I've searched for it and, after much difficulty,
found bits. Whilst locating wind turbines close to
dwellings is a valid issue for debate the part about "second
hand or rejects" strikes me as conjecture and an attempt
at FUD. (Sorry – DUF!)
Then there's the paragraph where it's stated that wind
generators actually cause power blackouts. Not true!
(Spain has produced up to 40% of its daily needs from
onshore wind generation with no apparent technical
problems.) Also, "myriad illnesses have been experienced
as a direct result of.. wind farms"; a myriad used
to be anything from 10,000 to infinity but these days it
just means an awful lot.
Worried? You bet your life I'm worried. We're told that
there's going to be less tourism, (Mael Carhaix is a well
known centre for tourism) house prices down by 40%,
or even unsaleable! Well, a lot of people might like that
except we're told that fewer families will want to live here
because of those myriad health problems and worst of
all:- poor TV and Internet reception. It's the end of the
world!!!!!!
A great big whirlygig between my house and the transmitter
might cause poor TV reception although I doubt that
and I cannot imagine any way that these things could
possibly affect Internet access (which is bad enough already
for most people in rural Brittany.) This is straightforward,
unalloyed scare mongering and it does no favours
to what should be a very serious and important
subject for discussion.
Perhaps the Journal could try a more balanced approach
to the arguments in favour and against renewable power
sources another time and explore other options.
I was unable to attend the meetings, but would be interested
to read a report about them.
Dear Tim
I have a well-established willow tree in my garden and
have just noticed that it has a multitude of holes at its
base – some holes are about 22mm diameter, others
10mm. There are about 10 holes. I have watched to see
if there are any creatures using these holes, but there are
none that I have observed.
Do you know of any treatment, or as to why these holes
have appeared?
Yours sincerely
Eric Jolly
Can you send in a picture of these holes? Are they in the ground
or in the tree? - Tim

The Brittany Motoring Club
A new club is being launched for motorists travelling to Brittany
- providing roadside breakdown cover plus other benefits.
The Brittany Motoring Club is the brainchild of Norman Winchester,
who spent 23 years at the RAC, latterly as national
and international events manager, and now lives most of the
year in Finistère. The club is open to anyone holidaying or resident
in Brittany, as well as those travelling through.
“Thousands of British drivers head to Brittany each year,”
said Mr Winchester. “But when they take out their breakdown
cover at home, they don’t realise that there are no service
fleets in France to carry out roadside repairs, as in the UK.
“Breakdown cover in France is generally reliant on local garages,
who tow you in to carry out the repair in their workshops
– which costs the motorist more time and money.
“However, BMC members will get the benefit of a ‘pay-on-use’
roadside assistance service provided by Brit Assist with a team
of highly-experienced English-speaking mechanics.”
Mr Winchester, who launched Brit Assist after taking early retirement
from the RAC seven years ago, heads the company,
which also provides breakdown cover for the Le Mans 24-hour
race, and several major classic car rallies across Europe.
Membership of the BMC costs €10 or £10 per year and entitles
members to priority response from Brit Assist and a discounted
rate on the first call-out; as well as information on
driving in Brittany. “The services we offer will develop as the
club grows,” said Mr Winchester. “For the modest charge, it’s
valuable peace of mind.”
The club is also planning to run special weekends for drivers
who have not driven on the continent before.
Obituary
Andy Evans
It is with great sadness that I am writing
to let the readers of the CBJ know of the
sudden, tragic loss of my husband, Andy
Evans, on Friday 13 May.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone for their kind messages of
sympathy and support for me and my family.
Our friends have been so kind and helpful
that a simple "thank you" doesn't seem
enough, but I thank them all the same.
I know that Andy would have wanted me
to thank all his past clients for their support
over the past few years. I know he loved
his work and enjoyed helping people resolve
their problems. That so many of you
had since become our friends is a great testament
to him.
Again, thank you to everyone.
18 Doll Museum / Restaurant Review
Josselin:
From the North Pole to Australia:
New Exhibition at the Doll Museum.
Hard on the heels of the recent flower festival at the château of Josselin, Antoinette
de Rohan will open her 2011 doll exhibition on 30th May. Housed in
the château’s former stables and entitled "From the North Pole to Australia",
dolls and toys invite you to accompany them on the journey. The display
will feature several hundred exhibits—some extremely old—drawn from
five continents. As with last year’s exhibition, which explored a wide range
of different careers, the display will once again offer a opportunity to see
more unique items from the famous Rohan collection, started over a century
ago by Josselin de Rohan’s great grandmother. On display there will be some
extremely rare examples created by Aboriginal and Indian artists, and artists
from the extreme north. There will also be antique dolls from Mexico, Peru,
China and Japan, as well as dolls and toys from numerous European countries,
brought together to take visitors on a world tour in microcosm.
A footnote on Josselin in Bloom: more than 3000 people attended during the
weekend. There was a wide variety of plants available, with the added bonus of a visit to the English garden, which
really is a hidden gem.
Restaurant Review: L'Abri des Barges
It has only been open for a few months; it is difficult
to find, signs are scarce ( I've friends in the police
force, it helps); the owners do not speak English
and won't even try, which is most enticing. But the
food is excellent and reasonably priced. The oysters,
the fish... It has to be fine weather, the view over
the Jaudy river is lovely, watching sails pass up or
down.. We also tried an evening dinner, - it is still
not necessary to book. The
Tréguier Cathedral is of course
a must. Vaut le détour!..
WHO WAS
GLENMOR?
Sometime in the 70s I went to a concert in
Plymouth featuring a group from Brittany
led by a certain Alan Stivell.
It was the period of folk-rock but even
so the combination of Celtic harp and bagpipes,
violin, accordion and a high-pitched
oboe (the bombarde) along with electric
guitars and drums was unusual and very
exciting. Part of the excitement was the
sense that something was going on behind
the passion and conviction in the music.
That something was Breton revivalism,
then at its height. Much later at a fest-noz in
Cleguerec I heard the mesmerising voice of
Gilles Servat, then in his fifties, for the first
time. These and other names, like the poet
Xavier Grall, all led back to a shadowy figure
called Glenmor who they claimed was
their inspiration and mentor.
So who was Glenmor? The name, of
course, was an adopted one, combining glen (valley
and, by extension, land) and mor(sea). His real
name was Milig(Emile) ar Skanv. He was born in
June 1931, the son of peasant farmers, in the commune
of Mael-Carhaix. At school he was forbidden
to speak in Breton. This was the impoverished,
downtrodden Brittany of the pre-war years, where
at the entrance to rural schools was a sign which
read: NO SPITTING, NO SPEAKING BRETON.
Even as a child he smarted at the injustice of this
situation and how it humiliated his non-French
speaking father and thousands like him. However,
he appears to have had a fairly conventional education
with exam successes, followed by military
service and a course in philosophy at the University
of Rennes. There ensued a period in Paris where
he wrote, acted, and developed his musical talents
interspersed with travelling. It was in Belgium that
he met his future wife Katell and the two of them
spent some time together on the road gigging in an
assortment of venues, a nomadic lifestyle that he
never really abandoned, even after the couple went
back to Brittany to live and raise two children.
Increasingly in songs, poems, articles, and political
tracts he promoted the cause of Breton identity.
He had a deep, powerful, rough-edged voice and a
declamatory style that many find captivating, others
tiresome. He said he felt that a concert was a
success only if, afterwards, in the course of a long
night of drinking with fans, he succeeded in converting
at least one of them into a fervent Breton
nationalist.
He even published a periodical, with Xavier
Grall, for a couple of years entitled The Breton Nation.
All this activity led to him being banned from
the airwaves by a State fearful of Brittany developing
a terrorist network like ETA or the IRA. In fact
Basque terrorists were provided with safe houses,
but Glenmor never espoused violence, and Breton
continued overleaf

insurgence never went beyond blowing up the radio
masts on the Monts d'Arrée.
Predictably, when he bought a secluded manor
house near Mellionnec, he alienated many of his
supporters who accused him of profiting from the
misery of his people. Others pointed out that the
price would not have bought a studio flat in Paris.
Further disenchantment followed as he sang and
wrote more and more in French. He argued that
to further the cause one had to use the language
of the enemy, but that enemy was France not the
French, by which he meant, presumably, a repressive
centralising state.
Photos taken in his later years show him looking
very much the celtic bard with long hair, wispy
beard and penetrating eyes. He died in 1996 and
was buried in the village of his birth. Thousands
joined the funeral procession in a sea of black and
white flags. On the simple headstone is written "et
Clean the elderflowers by holding upside
down and tapping sharply to dislodge any
insects, then dunk in a bowl of water with a
dribble of vinegar. Drain well on absorbent
paper. Mix flour, caster sugar, grapeseed oil
and add enough water to make a smooth
batter with the consistency of double
cream. Cover and stand for about half
an hour. Pour about 5-6cm sunflower
oil into a deep saucepan and heat until a
cube of bread dropped into it turns golden
within a minute. Whisk the egg whites to
soft peaks and fold into the batter mix. Dip
the flower heads into the batter and place
gently into the hot oil. Cook until fluffy
and golden, turning gently to cook evenly.
Remove with a slotted spoon on to kitchen
paper and keep warm until the flowers
are all cooked. Serve with lemon or lime
wedges or chutney.
Bon Appetit!
voici bien ma terre, la vallée de mes amours" (and
here truly is my land, the valley of my loves).
Those who fell under the spell of Glenmor say
that before him Brittany was considered a poor,
backward place of superstition and strange customs,
removed from the mainstream of French
life, and that people felt ashamed to own up to their
regional identity. After him, to be Breton born and
bred became a source of pride. It is certainly true
that any visitor to Brittany is soon aware of the
vitality of the traditional music and dance scene
and the reverence for the patrimoine of chapels
and holy wells, the restored stone houses and the
smartened-up villages, even while there are still
pockets of deprivation and decay. At least some
of this revival must originate in the life and work
of Glenmor.
Robert Thorpe
The week of events commemorating the 80th anniversary of Glenmor's birth (and the 15th of his death) takes place
in Carhaix from the 18th to the 25th of June. For those readers who wish to see and hear the man, there are videoclips
of performances and TV interviews to be found via google.fr and on YouTube. Of note are "O Keltia" and
the rousing call to arms "Kan bale an ARB". Alan Stivell's beautiful lament "Kenavo Glenmor" and Gilles Servat's
"Je dors en Bretagne" are worth tracking down.
Heroes of
the Tour
The biggest hero is the French countryside as the
Tour winds its majestic way through some of the
most stunningly beautiful parts of France. I am always
awed when I see some of the truly wonderful
places, and vow to visit some of them whenever I can
find the time. The other heroes are the riders themselves,
and I should state that Brittany has provided
some of the most prolific winners of the tour. For a
region not notable for its big mountains it seems, to
me, amazing that there have been so many good riders
originating from this region.
One of the The Tour de France’s most outstanding
competitors is Lance Armstrong, from Texas
U.S.A., who has won the race seven times, and who
will always remain a legend, not least because he
won his first Tour de France after recovering from
testicular cancer. He was always going to be a good
rider from his early years when he won the World
Road Race Championship at a very tender age.
The most outstanding cycle rider of all time must be
the Belgian Eddie Merckx who won every major
cycling event, as well as the Tour de France on 5
occasions. In 1969, as well as winning the overall
race, he won the mountains classification and the
points classification. A unique feat. He also won
three World Road Race Championships, as well as
five Tours of Italy and one Tour of Spain. He spent
more days leading the Tour de France than any other
rider in history and will remain, in most fans' eyes,
the World’s greatest ever cyclist.
There have been several riders who have five victories
to their credit, including two of my own favourites,
Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault. There
are three riders with three victories in their own ‘palmare’,
and this category includes my own, ‘all time
hero’ Louison Bobet.
The Tour de France 21
The Tour de France
The Greatest Race on Earth: Part 5
Mike Chapman provides an insight into the workings of the Tour de France, which passes through
Brittany in July this year.
Some of my own Favourites.
Jacques Anquetil: A ‘pretty boy’ of French Cycling
in the 1960s. One of his favourite games was to let
the peloton leave him behind for a few kilometres
then ride calmly back into the bunch and take off
his ‘casquette’, (small cap), and quietly take out
his comb from his racing jersey and comb his hair.
The French loved him for his flamboyance and real
ability. He was born in Seine Maritime, and died in
Rouen at the young age of 53.
Bernard Hinault: Bernard was given the nickname
‘The Badger’ because, like the badger, he was a very
strong and uncompromising rider who took no prisoners.
He ruled the peloton as if he owned it and
would brook no disobedience. Bernard was born at
Yffiniac close to Lamballe and St Brieuc, and was
always going to be a tremendous bike rider, having
won the World Road Race championship in 1980, as
well as the Tour in 1978 and 1979. After his sabbatical
to win the World Road race he won the tour
again in 1981, 1982 and 1985. His record stands a
plausible second all-time great behind the legendary
rider from Belgium, Eddie Merckx. Bernard still assists
in the running of the Tour, and can be seen at the
podium, on the rider's left at the prize presentations.
Louison Bobet: Louison was born over a baker's
shop in St Meen le Grand, a little town situated between
Loudeac and Rennes. This man oozed style.
He rode a bicycle as if it was part of his own body.
Everything he did he did with style, and brought a
new era to French cycling. In addition to being the
first rider to win the Tour three times, between 1953
and 1955 he also won the World Road Race Championship
in 1954.
It is difficult to understand why such lowland regions
should be capable of turning out such tough
individuals, but I think they were blessed with gifts
beyond my understanding.
Next month, in the final article of this series, Mike
explains the details of the 2011 race - the route that it
is following, and the best places to see it in Brittany.

Q: I've been hearing about Endpoint Protection.
What is it and should I have it?
A: Apple and Linux users can either stop reading or
develop their smug, self-satisfied (slightly irritating)
smiles. This stuff only applies to the 90% of us who still
use Windows.
In networking computer-speak the "endpoint" is the
last link. That's your computer, so "Endpoint Protection"
is simply a fancy way of saying "protect your computer".
Also called Endpoint Security, it's been around for a
few years. It refers to bundled security programs for
commercial users but is now making inroads into the
personal arena. It's really just advertising speak for
combined Firewall, Anti-Virus and Spyware software.
Many people consider all this to be nothing more than
an attempt to continue ripping off the unwitting. Mind
you there are still conspiracy theorists out there who
reckon the security companies create viruses and the
like so as to make their products necessary. Tosh of
course, but not all conspiracies are theory.
All versions of Microsoft Windows are prone to
malicious code attack, either as viruses, trojans,
worms, data miners, or as other forms of spying. Some
are not particularly serious whilst others can destroy
your valuable data or even steal your identity. I've
been banging on about this for the past seven years
but, although the situation has improved, the threat has
not gone away. Whilst Vista and Windows7 are more
secure, many people continue to use XP which is highly
susceptible to attack.
email and web browser but it's a wise precaution to
install some kind of Anti-Virus software even if this does
hit computer performance. There are paid offerings
from Symantec (Norton) and McAffee which often come
pre-installed on a new machine. The first thing I do is
to bin them because there are free programs from AVG
and Avast that do the same job just as well. Best of
all is Microsoft Security Essentials, which is also free.
There, I've said it – something good from Microsoft! As
an aside, they have some other good stuff too. Maybe
another time.
A firewall is a vital piece of software that monitors and,
if necessary, blocks traffic over a network connection
such as the Internet. Every computer should have one
but, sad to say, that in XP is practically worthless. Either
get one from Zone Alarm but watch out for their tricky
efforts at making you pay, or go to Comodo who have
the best free firewall available. Their AV program is
pretty good too. Just get the lot from them and sleep
easy.
Spyware is software that gets into your computer and
reports what you do to the nasty people who manage it.
Most of this stuff is pretty innocuous but, occasionally,
you'll get something that can actually take over your
computer without you even realising it. There's all sorts
of Anti-Spyware stuff out there but the easiest way is
to block third-party cookies in your browser and delete
cookies and browser history occasionally. Ccleaner will
do all that for you and clean up your files and Windows
Registry. It's free, of course!
Finally, should you choose not to use some or all of this
stuff, or, even if you do, but suspect that your computer
has been compromised, get a copy of MalwareBytes
and run it. Do not use this serious and excellent piece of
kit as a security substitute. You could do more damage
than good.
Oh, I forgot. You asked about Endpoint Protection. If
you've been reading my stuff in the past and following
my advice, you already have it and don't need to spend
money on this sort of advertising nonsense.
For What It's Worth
Local jeweller, Malcolm Rogers, continues his series of articles on the secrets of the jewellery trade:
Art Deco The History of Art Deco
After the Universal Exposition of 1900, various
French artists formed a formal collective
known as La Société des Artistes Décorateurs
(the society of the decorator artists). Founders
included Hector Guimard, Eugène Grasset,
Raoul Lachenal, Paul Follot, Maurice Dufrene,
and Emile Decour. These artists heavily infl uenced
the principles of Art Deco as a whole.
This society's purpose was to demonstrate
French decorative art's leading position and
evolution internationally. They organized the
1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs
et Industriels Modernes (International
Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative
Art), which would feature French art and
business interests. Russian artist Vadim Meller
was awarded a gold medal for his scenic
design there.
The initial movement was called Style
Moderne. The term Art Deco was derived from
the Exposition of 1925, though it was not until
the late 1960s that this term was coined by art
historian Bevis Hillier, and popularized by his
1968 book, Art Deco of the 20s and 30s. In the
summer of 1969, Hillier conceived organizing
an exhibition called Art Deco at the Minneapolis
Institute of Arts, which took place from July
to September 1971. After this event, interest in
Art Deco peaked with the publication of Hillier's
1971 book, The World of Art Deco, a record of
the exhibition.
The Art Deco style infl uenced jewellery
made in the 1920s and 1930s. The style emphasized
a very abstract design with geometric
patterns. The favourite colours were black
(onyx), blue (sapphire), green (emerald), white
(diamond) and red (coral). The baguette and
emerald-cuts, which had been developed in
the nineteenth century, were very popular in
the 1920s because they blended so much with
the geometrical lines of the Art Deco style.
Most of the Art Deco jewellery was expensive
and designed for the luxury market. A
lot of people had made money in the war of
1914–18, and this gave them the opportunity
to buy jewellery made from diamonds, platinum,
red gold, yellow gold, and rare jewels. Of
course there are a lot of beautiful but less expensive
pieces from the Art Deco movement,
particularly items produced in the 1960s and
1970s when Art Deco came back into fashion
as a very popular decorative art. Even nowadays
the infl uence of Art Deco can be seen in
all the branches of the creative arts.
What do Blenheim Palace and Rosanbo Castle
in Lanvellec, Côtes d’Armor, have in common?
Both had owners with the ambition to recreate the
grandeur of the past by landscaping their grounds
with the help of the renowned French landscaper
Achille Duchêne (1866-1947), who was inspired by
the rules of architecture and decoration rather than
horticulture.
The magnifi cent Italian and French style Water
Terraces at Blenheim Palace were skilfully designed
for the 9th Duke of Marlborough’s residence. His
second wife, Gladys Deacon, famously said “I married a house not a man!”. In her youth, she lived a bohemian
life in Paris, counting Proust, Rodin, and Monet amongst her friends. She was living at Blenheim Palace when
the water terraces were built in the 1920s, and followed the progress of the project as she was a keen amateur
photographer.
The formal, regular French-style gardens at Rosanbo were completed in 1910. They were specially made for
a practical purpose: horse practice. Henri Le Peletier de Rosanbo had a passion for horses, and he decided that
a four-hectare orchard that had been abandoned after the French Revolution should be made into nine green
'rooms' bordered by two and a half kilometres of hornbeam hedges surrounded by a six hundred and sixty six
metre horse riding path. A 500 metres vaulted hornbeam passage protected the promeneurs from the horses, and
from the sun, rain, and wind. The stables were built at the same period on the ruins of old buildings. The ruins
of a 16th century chapel have been incorporated into the north east of the garden.
Of the many French gardens restored by Achille Duchêne, the gardens of Vaux le Vicomte are the most famous.
These were the fi rst “jardins à la française” and were originally designed by André Le Nôtre, who was
then appointed as the royal gardener to King Louis XIV at Versailles. Duchêne was a very prolifi c landscaper
and a great defender of French garden history. By 1935 he had concluded that there was no future in designing
great parks for the aristocracy and wrote “Les Jardins de l’Avenir” (The Gardens of the Future) in which he suggested
that gardens would be smaller and more functional. The Duchêne style was Arts and Crafts, in the sense
of taking an old tradition and using it inventively with close attention to construction and planting details.
HOLY JOE
I'm sat out on deck, we're alongside Park Quay,
Splicing eyes in a multiplait,
When this man comes on board and comes right up to me,
And asks to know what I am at...
But not so he means it, I see right away
That splicing is not his ambition,
So I put in some tucks, wait to hear what he'll say,
And he tells me he's come from the Mission.
But he isn't a padre, he's not a trainee,
Or any of that Sailor's Home squad.
But he pulls out some pamphlets and books, two or three,
And asks if I think about God.
Well, yes, standing watches for hours on end
My thoughts run all over the show.
And you may be surprised to find seafarers tend
To see further and more than you know.
And I reckon the badness is mostly ashore,
And you'll find it in every guise:
The con man, the mugger, the pimp and his whore.
The preacher with well polished lies.
And cleverer lies than the one you told me
When you mentioned the Mission in vain;
You have some kind of mission, with that I'll agree,
But you've given it a Hell of a stain.
Since you knew “Seamen's Mission” was what I'd understand,
You have used a cheap salesman's trick
In the name of your god. Is your god underhand?
And this holy joe looks pretty sick.
“I'm not to be laughed at,” he says with a frown,
And he leaves without even a nod.
And I feel a bit sick for this self righteous clown,
But I really feel sorry for God.
THE HONESTY OF
SHOES
When you lack them it concentrates the mind,
as foot soles remain tender for a time -
tend to take on the woes of all humankind.
Without shoes the loss makes you inclined
to avoid the step in an early morning rime -
when you lack them it concentrates the mind.
You need to have a sole of some solid kind
in order to weigh and continue the climb -
to be honest at the woes of all humankind.
There comes a time when you must unwind,
unlace while you are still in your prime -
for when you lack it concentrates the mind.
Shoes can take you safely through the grind,
help choose a pathway through the grime
marked by the honest woes of all humankind.
Where you walk influences what you will find
though the soles of all shoes wear out in time
when honest lack always concentrates the mind,
can help understand the woes of all humankind.
On and Off the Beaten Track
Guillotin’s Oak
1000 year old oak trees are uncommon. This one is just far enough off the beaten track not to make a
detour while hacking to or from St. Malo. So, as many of us rarely visit things that are on our doorstep,
I determined to go.
Despite having seen a picture, at fi rst sight I was disappointed. I suppose I had been expecting a
majestic oak with a thick leafy canopy in the Charles II myth tradition. Leaves it has, but they are not
thick. Some branches have none at all and reach to the sky like supplicating fi ngers. However, with a
circumference of 9.65 metres, it is much more impressive close to. It is 20 metres high and I had more
of a sense of its grandeur standing beneath it. The bark too is extraordinary, gnarled and warped by
time. To my surprise it was also hollow, which I suppose accounts for the intermittent foliage, but also
its name.
According to the account as told by the tree itself on a nearby panel, it was seeded in 1144, when
Halley’s comet was visiting. This would make it 867 years old, though elsewhere it says that it is 1000
years old. It has lived through the pageant of French history and the anthroproarbric writer singles
out various events before arriving at the cataclysm of the
revolution.
M. Guillotin was the curé of nearby Concoret. In 1791
the “sans culottes”—working class as opposed to bourgeois
revolutionaries—arrived to instil the values of the
republic on the eager paysans. Guillotin was in danger so
he fl ed the republican army, who pursued him with sabres
drawn. Whether he knew that the tree was hollow, history
fails to record, but he arrived at the oak exhausted and terrifi
ed, and squeezed inside.
At this point pure fantasy takes over as the tree remembers
praying hard for him to be saved. Hey presto, the
opening was covered with an enormous cobweb thanks to
Notre-Dame of Paimpont, who heard the prayer and trans-
'Le Menhir' Glomel
Sources are generally in agreement that the
menhir in Glomel measures 8.6 metres, and is
probably the 3rd largest in Brittany (after Kerloas,
St-Renan and Champ-Dolent, Dol-de-Bretagne),
which in turn would make it the 3rd tallest standing
stone in the world.
The Menhir is not easy to miss. It stands on the
Rue du Menhir, in the Village du Menhir, just
outside the town of Glomel. It is at the top of a
hill overlooking the canal, set amongst houses.
The stone itself is actually on private property
and visitors are currently not able to go right up
to the Menhir.
Glomel
Continuing the series of articles on
Breton communes, this month the Journal
focusses on Glomel, a rural commune at
the southern edge of Côtes d'Armor.
Glomel is now best known for being
situated at the highest point of the
Nantes-Brest canal, but its existence
long predates the building of the canal;
like most Breton towns, its original
purpose was to serve a community of
small, independant farmers.
Specifi c information about the
economic development of the
commune is hard to come by, but
census fi gures indicate that in the mid
1800s the population was about three
and a half thousand, and this fi gure
Top: Convicts (mainly people who had refused to serve in
the French army) were conscripted to build the 'Grande
Tranchée' which linked the western and eastern sections of
the Nantes - Brest Canal
rose to over four thousand by the start of the twentieth century.
Since then, the population has been in decline, and in the 2006
census it was recorded to be just one thousand, four hundred.
Some older residents can remember a time when there were
still five bakeries, ten bars and three abattoirs in the town,
and up until the 1960s the commune of Glomel was almost
certainly still self sufficient in almost all of the essentials
of life. Most of the inhabitants were farmers, meaning that
there could have been up to a thousand autonomous, or semiautonomous,
farming units in the commune. Most of the
inhabitants probably rarely - or never - travelled outside the
commune.
In a sense the area is still struggling to find
a new identity to take the place of this
rugged rural-Breton model. By every
standard the population level is low - just
eighteen people per square kilometre. A
comparable region in the UK - such as
parishes on the edge of Dartmoor, for
example - have more than four times this
number of people per square kilometre, and
in historical terms these are also sparsely populated. Of even
greater significance is the fact that local people are no longer
obliged to shop locally. Local businesses cannot rely on local
custom for their survival, and this is reflected by the
eclectic range of businesses on the main street - Webbs
of Glomel (B&B), La Cascade (a hotel), Casa Nostra (a
pizzaria), Gwenn ha Du (a specialist crêpe maker), and a
specialist butcher. The town has also managed to retain a
range of essential services - a pharmacy, two hairdressers
(ladies and gents), a Proxi mini-market, a bakery and a
very popular bar, Le Korong, run by Frédéric Lahag.
Profile:
France Foley
Lynette Jarvis talks to France Foley, President of the
Lord Russell Association, Dinard
Bonjour Madame Foley, I’ve walked past this
beautiful house many times, so it’s a great pleasure
to be here inside. I know that you’re French,
but I’m hoping we can conduct the interview in
English!
That shouldn’t be a problem. My husband here is
British, and we met in London.
Was that through work?
Not really, but Fred was working for Renault. We
met in the Charles Péguy Club in Leicester Square,
frequented by French and Francophiles alike. Péguy
was a modernist poet, an intellectual socialist, and
also a great philanthropist. His poetry reveals a
constant search for justice and truth. He was killed
at the start of World War One. Many places are
named after him, even in London!
Whereabouts in France are you from?
I was born and brought up in Saint Cloud, Paris. We
got married in France, and Fred was able to transfer
to Renault’s Parisian Headquarters in Boulogne de
Billancourt, where we lived for the next 30 years.
My activities centred around family life, and the
position I held with Hewlett Packard.
When did you move to Dinard?
Ten years ago, but we had a holiday home in St Quay
Portrieux for many years before we retired to Brittany
full time. That’s when we moved to Dinard.
Why Dinard? Would you like to answer this one,
Fred?
It has everything we need, beautiful beaches, a wide
variety of shops and entertainment facilities, great
restaurants, including Moroccan, Thai, Chinese,
and Japanese, a great golf course, tennis club,
thalassotherapy centre, good medical services,
and of course St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church
attracts a wide variety of people, and has its own
English-language library. And we have the Annual
Festival of British Films here in Dinard, and several
art exhibitions.
www.thecbj.com
We have an airport (Ryanair) and it’s possible to live
in Dinard and get to England without a car! The boat
ferry crosses over to St Malo in just ten minutes, and
then it’s a short hop to the Brittany Ferries’ Terminal.
We find Dinard most welcoming, and it feels like
home, even to me, a Londoner!
Why do you think that is?
Dinard is a place where people retire to from several
different locations, both in France and elsewhere.
There has always been a large British community
here, which stops people feeling isolated. This
constant blend of ‘newcomers’ means that most
people are automatically friendly, and not ‘cliquish,’
which can happen when the majority has lived in the
same place all its life. We don’t have that problem
in Dinard.
And now to the Lord Russell Association please,
France. When did it start?
It was founded in 1983 by a group of friends,
including Ronald Frankel, the Honorary Consul in
St Malo at the time.
So why was it named after an English
Aristocrat?
Lord Russell of Liverpool (born 1895) was a jetsetter
who regularly appeared in Dinard. He was
a soldier, and a writer, and he died just two years
before the L.R.A. was formed, hence Ronald Frankel
decided it would be appropriate to call it after His
Lordship. He was quite a character, who had a total
of 3 French wives, but the fourth was English. She’s
buried in the British Section of the Cemetery here in
Dinard, next to him.
How many members do you have, and are they a
mixture of French and British?
We have approximately 250, and nowadays most of
them are indeed French. However, we are an Anglo
French Association, and are actively encouraging
new members to join, especially our British friends.
There are enough of them to form bonds within
themselves, whilst at the same time merging with
our French members, and thus promoting the Club’s
aims.
Which are?
To develop friendship ties with Great Britain and
English-speaking citizens living in Brittany, and to
provide an active programme of events and courses
which they will enjoy. Through this, we achieve an
outstanding level of conviviality.
Can you list these events and activities, please?
English and French language courses at all levels,
with professional teachers; English-language library;
English and French Scrabble sessions; reading
club; conferences, with guest speakers; excursions
throughout France, including visiting châteaux and
vineyards; regular trips to places further afield -
last year it was to Corsica, and Scotland; Dinners,
English afternoon teas, monthly cocktail parties;
English and French cookery demonstrations; Art and
handicraft classes.
That’s quite a list! Anything else you’d like to
mention?
Yes! We are twinned with Newquay, in Cornwall,
and we alternate our annual visits with them, one
year they come here, the next we go there. We’re
off to England to see them next week, in fact! It’s
a very active twinning group, and this year we are
celebrating our 25th Anniversary, Dinard-Newquay!
With so much on offer, is it expensive to join the
L.R.A.?
Our Membership Fee is 27€ per person, 43€ per
couple. But for that, they get free attendance at all
the courses on offer, whether they be language or art
classes, scrabble or cookery demonstrations. Even
the afternoon teas and monthly cocktails are free and
gratis, but obviously not dinners or trips!
What trips do you have planned for this year?
By the time your Readers have this issue we will have
been to Cornwall, but we have a few vacancies left
for our trip to the Bourgogne Region of France this
October (so join us soon to avoid disappointment!)
This will be a perfect opportunity to stock up on
some great Burgundies for the Festive Season.
40 Nature Diary
Nature Diary:
Resilient as a Fox
Cunning, clever, resourceful, and certainly not a welcome visitor to any respectable chicken
coop, the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is an animal that has adapted to live alongside humans in their
ever-changing world.
It has one of the widest distributions of any land mammal, which includes most of North America,
most of Europe, including some of the remotest areas of Russia, and Asia. It is also become
established in parts of Australia where it was introduced in the early 1900s. It is an adaptable mammal
that can deal equally well with the harsh tundra of Siberia as with the rich farmlands of England
and Brittany.
A red fox will eat almost anything accept grass and vegetation; it is more than content with a diet
of frogs, mice, voles, rabbits, birds' eggs, various insects, and earthworms. Of course foxes are also
associated with chickens, ducks, and other domestic birds kept in "safe pens" - safe that is until
the fox finds a way of entry.
It seems probable, however, that female foxes (vixens) do not normally resort to such hard-to-acquire
sources of food. Urban-based foxes will readily survive by learning to forage out of dustbins
and human waste areas. Bits of burgers and pizzas are taken with relish.
Mating between the dog fox and the vixen takes place from December to February; the gestation
period is 51 to 52 days, and a mature vixen will give birth to between 2 to 6 cubs. The young are
born helpless, and depend upon their mother, and possibly the father, for milk and then food for
the first 3 months of their lives, during which they remain deep underground. With the coming of
spring the cubs follow their parents above ground and start to learn hunting techniques. At this time
of year it is not uncommon to see a vixen with her cubs, usually around dusk. Fox cubs are fully
grown at 6-8 months, and with the coming of winter, they to wander off to nearby territories
to establish their own families.
A fox's eyes are amber, with slit pupils that enable it to hunt at
dusk and at night; their ears are large and mobile (to pinpoint
possible prey very precisely) and their coat is usually
reddish brown, but variations in colour
do occur.Of course, the most obvious and
prominent part of a fox is its long bushy
tail, called a 'brush'. This is used to
good effect as a sort of steering rudder
when leaping up and pouncing
on food.
'Cunning as a fox.' 'Sly as a
fox': folklore has given this very
adaptable creature a harsh reputation.
Despite being persecuted
for centuries this animal continues
to survive and flourish. Not
many other mammals can match
that for resilience.
Gardening
Tim the Gardener
June in the Garden
The big talking point at the moment is still the weather.
Last month I advised watering newly-planted trees that show the
slightest sign of stress, and this advice still holds. Losing a tree is
quite a serious catastrophe in the garden, and they should therefore
be given priority when water is scarce. Many gardeners in
Brittany are fortunate enough to have a private supply of water,
and can afford to water their vegetable gardens. The traditional
advice to gardeners in a drought is to hoe after watering, and
to mulch the ground as well, if possible. Hoeing helps to reduce
evaporation by creating a powdery layer on the surface of the
soil.
Planting
If you haven't planted out all your frost-sensitive plants, now is the
time to do it. I have always had particular success with courgettes
in Brittany, last year I had a very good crop of gherkins, and as
a result, this year I have been encouraged to try growing my cucumbers
outdoors. Chilli peppers also grow well outdoors, and
if you have a sheltered spot with rich soil, it may be worth trying
aubergines and peppers. Tomatoes grow well, but in most years
they are affected by
Tim the Gardener contd
go brown, you can use them to make chutney.
Harvesting.
In most gardens, the potato crop has ripened two
or three weeks earlier than usual, and if you dig
up some of your early potatoes you should find
that they are quite a reasonable size. Hopefully
we will get a little more rain in June, so that the
rest of the crop can benefit from its good start.
If you have any cabbage/brassica plants, you can
use them to fill the gaps left when you dig up the
potatoes - or sow some chicory, it is one of the
most popular crops amongst Breton gardeners.
Plant hollyhock seeds
in June. Transplant in
November, and they will
flower the following
Summer.
