<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Ready</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>take</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Google's</strong> <strong>Android</strong><br />

The mobile OS-maker <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g> has just raised USD 80 milli<strong>on</strong> in its Series C funding round with<br />

backing from Twitter, Rupert Murdoch <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Qualcomm, making its goal of taking <strong>Android</strong> from<br />

Google all the more possible.<br />

The people behind <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g> have c<strong>on</strong>sistently expressed their visi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> make <strong>Android</strong> a more<br />

"open" ecosystem <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> OS. "We're committed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> creating an open computing platform that<br />

fundamentally empowers the entire mobile ecosystem from developers <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> hardware makers, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

most importantly, c<strong>on</strong>sumers around the world. We're excited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have the backing of an amazingly<br />

diverse group of strategic inves<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs who are supporting us in building a truly open <strong>Android</strong>," said<br />

Kirt McMaster, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s CEO.<br />

Other notable inves<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs in the most recent round include Telef<strong>on</strong>ica, Access Industries, Smartfren<br />

Telecom, Vivi Nevo <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Index Ventures. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s previous funding rounds, they got USD 30<br />

milli<strong>on</strong> from Tencent, Redpoint Ventures, Benchmark <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Andreessen Horowitz. This particular<br />

round which left the startup with a <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>tal of USD 110 milli<strong>on</strong> was led by India's Azim Premji<br />

PremjiInvest, as reported by <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hass</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Associates</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Accounting</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Horowitz's partner, Peter Levine, who invested in the sec<strong>on</strong>d round of funding said, "App <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> chip<br />

vendors are very worried about Google c<strong>on</strong>trolling the entire experience." He also admitted that at<br />

first he did not think "a startup could come in <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> create a new OS".<br />

A number of other tech giants have already tried <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> crack a shot at the mobile OS market such as<br />

Samsung, Microsoft, Nokia, Blackberry, Intel, Palm <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mozilla. McMaster admitted he's well

aware of the big risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> that's precisely why he thinks using <strong>Android</strong> is the <strong>on</strong>ly way <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> effectively<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>take</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> Google. By making available <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the public the code of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g>, he's expecting <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> gain<br />

support from app developers who wants <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> have another opti<strong>on</strong> aside from the limited <strong>on</strong>es<br />

currently provided by Google <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Apple. For instance, a payment soluti<strong>on</strong>s provider could create a<br />

highly cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mized payment system that can work better than Apple Pay or Google Wallet.<br />

S<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>esh Patnam of Premji Invest said, "We invested in <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g> because we're big prop<strong>on</strong>ents<br />

of what they're doing in opening up <strong>Android</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> supporting global <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> local ecosystem players.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g> is well-positi<strong>on</strong>ed <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> become the third leading mobile OS, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> we're excited <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> back<br />

them in growing their business <strong>on</strong> a global scale."<br />

Formed 6 years ago as <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g>Mod Project, it started with 40-year old programmer Steve<br />

K<strong>on</strong>dik tinkering with <strong>Android</strong> code <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> maximize its performance. So<strong>on</strong> enough, <strong>on</strong>line forums have<br />

started <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> pick up <strong>on</strong> his cus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mizable versi<strong>on</strong> which led <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> other programmers joining him. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Hass</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Associates</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Accounting</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s report says that as early as 2011, a milli<strong>on</strong> mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es have<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g> installed in it.<br />

To date, around 50 milli<strong>on</strong> h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>sets are running <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g>, most of those underwent flashing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

rebooting. C<strong>on</strong>sidering that <strong>on</strong>e has <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>take</str<strong>on</strong>g> time <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> effort in erasing the current OS of the ph<strong>on</strong>e<br />

before installing <str<strong>on</strong>g>Cyanogen</str<strong>on</strong>g>, it's not a stretch <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> say that there is indeed a dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> for a highlycus<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g>mizable<br />

OS.
