alumni news milestones 1980 Michael DeAloia ‘87 was recently appointed as a regional vice president for the Cleveland, Ohio, Operations of Expedient, a Pittsburgh, Penn., based operator of data centers. 1990 Elizabeth Jentleson Wright ‘97 is the Membership and Marketing Director at Sycamore Creek Country Club in Springboro, Ohio. She and her husband, Jason, reside in Kettering with their three “furry children.” 2000 Adam Kaney ‘03 moved to Chicago after graduating from Ohio State and earning his law degree. He is currently awaiting his bar exam results and looking for work as an attorney. Hanna Libecap McMullen ‘03 married Mark McMullen in August 2010; they have a son, James William (1). Malaika Robinson ‘03 has been working on her associates of science degree from Everest University since 2010 and will graduate this April. Jena Schafer ‘05 writes, “After winning two state championships in girls basketball at Chaminade Julienne, I went on to play for the women’s basketball team at Indiana Wesleyan University. Our team won the 2007 NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship going 38-0. I am now completing a master’s degree in social work at The Ohio State University, graduating this May.” Rachel Chandler ‘08 is a recent graduate, with honors, from Central Connecticut State University. She has a bachelor’s degree in business management and an associates degree in Spanish. She very much enjoyed her time there playing Division I basketball as well. She is pursuing her master’s in business administration with a concentration in leadership at Ohio Dominican University. She is acting as an A & R representative at a local Columbus-based record label. She is looking forward to spending an extended amount of time in New York City within the next few months. There, she will be interning at Atlantic Records. She will complete her MBA this December. Rachel writes, “Because of God’s grace, I have been blessed thus far, and I am achieving and pursuing everything that I have always wanted to pursue!” Thomas Cox ‘08 has joined the army and is now a Civil Affairs Medical Specialist for the 82nd Civil Affairs Battalion whose focus is on Africa. Molly Shanks ‘08 graduated from Miami University in 2012 and moved to Los Angeles a month later to work as an associate producer for History Channel’s reality show “Ax Men.” She moved to the Windy City in January to begin her new role as associate producer for “Chicago’s Best,” a show on — continued from page 9 live in our community as part of their formation,” said Bro. We are focused on what is the Marianist mission for the whole Dayton area. “We are ministers of the mission and charism of our founders. We are finding lay teachers and administrators so they can catch the spirit of what we are trying to do, and what the Sisters are trying to do. We are not by ourselves developing the schools; we are training the trainers,” said Bro. Zamierowski, who will retire from his work at the Fitz Center at UD this summer where he was involved with strategies for responsible development. “When this community closes, we will all leave and go to different communities and see each other at gatherings,” said Bro. Tom Schroer ‘60 will join the Chambers Street Community. “The number of men considering religious life is much different today than when I joined the Marianists in the 1950’s. But, now we have a new pope with a whole focus on service for the poor. You don’t know what that can generate,” said Bro. Brown, contemplating the idea of renewed interest in vowed religious life. “You just don’t know; it could swing the other way. We Marianists always prefer to open new places. Michael Lisbeth, former teacher — continued from page 3 A Humble Servant My first impression of him is that he is a very humble person, someone who is very happy, and who really wants to connect with the people, his people. I began thinking right away, why did he choose the name Francis? He’s a Jesuit, so Ignatius may have been a more understandable choice. And then I started thinking of St. Francis. When Francis received his vocation from the Lord, he got the message, “Francis, rebuild my church.” And maybe that is the message our Holy Father wants us to get from his pontificate. The other thing I thought of is Francis is the peacemaker. I thought of all of the great events held in Assisi to pray for peace for mankind. I learned that as the Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Rev. Jorge Mario Bergogolio chose not to live in the bishop’s palace, but rather among the poor in Buenos Aires. He humbly took the bus to work, rather than using a chauffeur. What will his example mean for our Church? These are certainly exciting times. Finally, it was time to make our way back up to the college, all 250 of us. We gathered for prayer in the chapel, which had been planned ahead of time. We sang the “Te Deum” in thanksgiving, and then we prayed silently in front of the Blessed Sacrament for our pope. Pope Benedict announced he would abdicate the papacy on February 11; it seemed so long ago, and there were so many questions. Now, in God’s perfect timing, all seems right again in His answer.
