President’s Message
Our Symposium this year in Stockton was a success not so much in numbers
but with everyone who attended and sharing their thoughts and viewpoints
on a variety of issues. There was a lot of interest and participation in our
General Assembly Meeting as well as, our Board Meeting. The Presenters at
our symposium were informative, easy to listen to and brought everyone up
to date. Megan Burtness did an outstanding job in purchasing the awards as
well as Jackie Verkuyl with presenting them. I would like to personally say
thank you to David Yee and Judy Hubert in organizing this year's
event. New and exciting ideas were discussed for next year's
symposium. New Board Members voted in were Andrea Barnes (Secretary),
Mindy Cavalletto (Director) and Mauren Ferrell (Director). I am looking
forward to a new and adventuress year with each of you!
Respectfully,
Welsh Making News...
She is known in the Welsh world as Miss Perfect, LD and in the Arabian
world as Lil Miss Perfect, LD and in either world the name says it all. Sired
by the Welsh Sec. B Stallion, Goldhills Most Wanted, LOM/AOE and out of
Aiming for Perfection this filly is bred to win in both rings and that is exactly
what she did in 2010 as a yearling.
Miss Perfect hit the show scene in April of 2010 at a WPCSA Gold rated
show and started making her mark as the top quality pony she is. Little did
we know that she was soon to make history. Miss Perfect earned notable
wins at the Welsh shows including 9 WPCSA Grand Championship titles, including being named WPCSA
Western National Grand Champion 1/2 Welsh and WPCSA American National Res. Grand Champion 1/2
Welsh. In the midst of all the Welsh shows, Miss Perfect attended the Region II Arabian show in Santa
Barbara and was pinned as the Region II Champion Breeder's Sweepstakes
1/2 Arabian Filly.
After completing her Welsh showing that ended with Miss Perfect earning
WPCSA Res. National Champion, she made the trek out to Tulsa
Oklahoma for the Arabian Nationals. Miss Perfect made quite an impression
on the judging panel of the HA/AA Yearling Filly Breeders
Sweepstakes class, earning 278 points to tie for the top National Champion
spot. The tie was broken according to the handbook rules, and Miss
Perfect finished with the Reserve National Championship; only two
points separating her from the Champion.
Owner and Breeder, Mary Anne Morrison, says "This pony is living
proof that meaningful time spent with kids has big pay-offs!" Nearly 50
years ago she was introduced to Welsh/Arab ponies on Martha's Vineyard.
The Welsh were lovely animals imported by Hope Ingersoll and
crossed with an elegant Arabian stallion named Never Die El Kheir. As a child of divorced parents, Mary
Anne's time on the farm with these ponies left an indelible impact..."Their breeders, Libby Belden and Elsie
MacLaughlin, from Tashmoo Farm, would rattle off pedigrees and qualifications...enough to make my head
spin! But I listened!"
Forty years later, Mary Anne says, "I saw a young Sec. B Welsh Stallion who made my head spin even
faster - Multi-Supreme Ch. Goldhills Most Wanted, LOM/AOE." Mary Anne contacted his owner, Megan
Burtness of BridleWood Welsh, explaining that she was in the process of acquiring some excellent Arabian
mares and would get back to her. By 2008 Mary Anne had her mares. The first breeding was to Aiming for
Perfection, out of Ames Perfection (double Brass). Mary Anne knew this cross was destined to be great,
but what a thrill to tie for National 1/2 Arabian Halter Champion against fantastic competition!!
Miss perfect is triple registered as a Half Welsh, a half Arabian, and as a Welara. She is also available
for sale, but until she sells she will continue with her showing career and is headed for Scottsdale in
February. And there is more greatness to come...Miss Perfect has a
little brother, This Magic Moment, LD (Goldhills Most Wanted, LOM/
AOE X Swan Song DDA), that is getting ready to hit the show scene in
2011 in both the Welsh and Arabian worlds. He will be joining the
BridleWood Welsh show team in March and we are greatly looking
forward to showing another exceptional Most Wanted baby.
A huge thank you to Mary Anne Morrison for selecting our stallion to
cross on all of her lovely mares. It has also been a dream come true
for us to see Miss Perfect out there making history and paving new
roads for the Welsh Pony breed. She is definitely...well... Perfect!!

Some News From Around the Barn...
Last weekend we decided to go to the local HDT, and since my driving pony
is now officially on maternity leave, decided it would be fun to take the
old boy out for a spin. At age 17 and after 3 years away from any sort of
competition we wondered how he would react, especially since the only time
he had been in the trailer during that time was to visit the collection station!
This story actually began last summer when Gerald was out of town
and Samantha was having a sleep over, leaving me at home alone with the
ponies. I thought it would be fun to hitch up Cops and see what happened.
By the time we were ready to go it was past dusk, but what the heck
- it was the only night I would be on my own, so out we went. Talk about a
pony having fun! He trotted around like a wild man, obviously enjoying himself
and saying, yes I miss this! So we started driving him on a semi regular
basis and started getting him back in some sort of shape and condition.
Back to the show, he stepped off the trailer like a gentleman and stood quietly while we checked out the dressage
arena and learned the cones course. Then to the driver's meeting and discovered we were first to go - a little rushing
around with finishing touches, and then Cops gave 4 good yawns before putting on the bridle (he is a big yawner - three
means it is a good day). Once the bridle was on, he was ready to go! Ears pricked up and feet dancing on the ground, he
was having fun. Off to safety check, where we were met by the announcer, who said "I don't have any information on this
white mare" - and then turned a little pink, when we said - "this is Cops!' That was all he needed to know. A couple of
warm up laps and the bell rang for our dressage test. Although Cops has competed all through the CDE levels, I have not,
so in an effort to keep this fun, we entered training level. After the second lopsided 40 meter circle, I could just feel Cops
saying, but when do we get to DO Something, obviously a little bored with the big slow circles. So we finished the test
without going off course or any major bobbles and off we went to cones. Since the cones were measured, our goal was
steady and clean, which we accomplished, and yes, got a good time,
too. This was the first time Cops had seen cones in years, but he
knew exactly what to do and had a great time doing it! Then back to
the trailer for the pony and off the learn the hazards for the people.
Shortly after lunch we hooked up for the marathon and off we
went. Coming into the first hazard Cops went "yahoo - this is great" - I
had to say "wait for me, and by the way we can only trot at this level",
so we had 5 respectable hazards, only got a little wet from the
rain. About as soon as we finished up the marathon the skies opened
up so we dashed into the back of the trailer to unharness out of the
rain. The weather got a little better, but we headed out early before
the scores were tallied and awards handed out. What a great
day! One of the most fun shows all year.
It turns out, it was a good thing we left when we did, the next day we got our score sheet to discover a nice dressage score
of 46.5 and our double clean cones were accompanied by a missed gate on the marathon (how could that have happened!)
and my first E. It was a fun day anyhow! And on Sunday, Cops' 4 year old daughter and my Dad competed in
Training level pony and won the division for the day, making us very proud.
For those who don't know Cops, he has shown and done well in both the Welsh and open
worlds, earning his individual OD, and this year his sire OD, as well as competing and winning
at places like the Live Oak CDE and siring hunter pony HOTY champions, so anything
more is really just for fun.
